  • Our recent trip to Indonesia found us with some time to visit Uluwatu Temple in Bali.
The temple is famous for the Macaques that roam freely terrorising tourists and stealing what they can.
We had been warned by our guide not to wear sunglasses as the monkeys like to steal these from your head, and not to take mineral water in plastic bottles as they love the sound of the plastic and the taste of the fresh water.
We had been happily watching a group of young Macaques playing in a water bath when a large male crept up behind a few people in our group. I warned them he was on the prowl, but before anyone could react he jumped up the back of our friend, and ripped her glasses from her face! (That's when I started recording)
We tried to bribe the glasses away from him with some water that the guide had in his bag, but the monkey was too clever, took the water and kept the glasses.
He then proceeded to eat the glasses before finally weeing on them. Needless to say, we never got the glasses back, and our friend had to spend the rest of her holiday without any glasses!!

The same thing happened when I visited this place(7 May 2019), a monkey stole the glasses of a man standing behind me.Its most probably the same monkey as in this video.

Monkeys are sacred to Bali and locals, is all about Karma, what goes around comes around. Just barter it with food you carry then you get back your stuff back.

Them teeth it kept showing would be knocked out it’s damn head. Negotiating with a monkey for my items? And people laugh and giggle like it’s cute. Shit got me angry.

They're absolutely notorious for stealing things - we were warned and were being so careful, but this one ran up our friends back and stole them off her face. The negotiating ploy was merely to try and get her glasses back as undamaged as we possibly could. Sadly it didn't work out.
