Tiger Woods - The Most Extraordinary Shot Story

  • David Feherty tells a funny story about a spectacualr shot that Tiger Woods hit. Tigers ball was in wet, nasty, horrible, six inch rough. Truly buried, and 190 yards away from the hole. Everybody figures that with a stick of dynamite he might be able to move the ball 50 yards... What does he do? Something that only Tiger can do - he nukes a pitching wedge 6 feet from the hole! One of the most extraordinary shots i have ever seen! And i know for a fact that what Ernie Els said (the part that has been censored) was "F*ck me! Did you see that??"... :)

These videos are about Wood's sublime control and play of this game!.....This guy is the greatest golfer who has ever lived...........I have seen ALL the greats LIVE from 1973 onwards who came and played here in Australia....Player, Nicklaus, Trevino, Watson, ETC, etc, etc....Tiger Woods is the GREATEST that ever was!...This guy pulls shots out of his ASRE...when they are needed... to win!!!............the ONLY guy who comes close to Woods in that regard is Bobby Tyre Jones Jnr.....The GREATEST Amateur golfer this world has or ever will know!!!.......3RD ...Jack Nicklaus................So those who want to bring Personal/ Moralistic/ Non Golf...... +Paul EJ That's a matter of opinion Paul, well here's mine, MOE NORMAN would be Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Tiger Woods and every other pga tour pro in history playing MATCH PLAY or STROKE PLAY, PERIOD! Tiger Woods had the strongest mind in pga tour history(if you don't include Moe Norman), BUT MOE NORMAN HAD THE STRONGEST MIND IN GOLF PERIOD, he NEVER got in his own way, Tiger had a few moments in his career in his prime WHERE HE GOT IN HIS OWN WAY. So, I agree that Tiger Woods is better than Jack and all of those players, but he's 2nd on my list, Moe Norman is the greatest golfer that ever live period, the only golfer who understood HOW to get to impact the same time after time, never had a problem with his swing, but Tiger, Jack, and everyone else did. History doesn't lie.

      I'm sure people might laugh at this but, the other player that had an incredible mind to go with absolute natural talent, just letting Physics and Gravity totally control his own swing, and he hit it great everytime with ZERO PRACTICE, and people even like Sam Snead and Byron Nelson wouldn't even dare to play him one on one 18 holes of stroke play and match play, he went by the nickname of "COUNT YOGI", i believe his real name was HILARY FRACKENBURG or something like that. Count Yogi did some incredible things. I would have loved to see MOE NORMAN and COUNT YOGI play each other, what a match that would have been.

      Ditto. Though I must add if there was at any time a player who dominated the game in a given season, it was Lord Byron in 1945. Yes, some pros were overseas finishing with WW2, but you still had a few of the greatest golfers ever playing that season. By current day standards, Nelson would have won more money in a season than any other player. What a year it was.

    Have missed Tiger's brand of all mighty Golfing prowess. These shots remind us that no one on Earth, present or past, is capable of playing these shots. I dont know, maybe combine Dustin Johnson with Ben Hogan or Lee Trevino and you might get someone close. Need a 3rd perhaps, Nicklaus's drive and even then was there someone with better course management? Those periods in the 2000s where his win ratio was above 25%, where he didnt miss a cut about for about 150 events were the best Golf ever, filled with these shots as if they were a dime a dozen. We took it for granted, and I guess so did he.

    @seanaudi13 The average tour pro hits their pitching wedge around 135-140yd with 145-155yd as an extreme on tour. 190yd alone is remarkable, but tiger also plays weak lofted (traditional lofted) irons so his pw is actually around 51 degrees which is typically a gap wedge. I have no idea what kind of golf monster you are but I have a club head speed of 121mph driver and 110mph 7iron on trackman, play to a 0.6 hdcp and still don't believe I could get that kind of distance even with a flyer lie.

    If you try this shot off a fairway lie, it's impossible. The SW launches too high to go 190. It would just start losing distance and go higher rather than further. If it's in the rough it will go further because it's going to launch out lower and be more of a boring trajectory that allows him to hit it further instead of higher. But I've seen Bubba Watson hit a PW a few yards shy of 200.

Ernie‘s reaction instead was to a totally different shot: watch „Tiger Woods favourite shot“ at Hazeltine out of a bunker were he played with Ernie

    • @DMcBoo2002
      @DMcBoo2002 Před 3 lety +3

      I'm trying to figure out what actually happened and when. I've probably spent WAY too much time on this inconsequential matter...but now I'm invested.
      You are absolutely correct that the wedge out of the thick rough was at the 2000 NEC, and that Tiger was playing with Phil. It was the third round, and Tiger and Phil finished the second round in first and second place, respectively, so they were paired together for the third round. Their drives on 18 were about a yard apart in the rough and there is video of Phil hitting his shot before Tiger, which came up a little short. So, Tiger was definitely not playing with Els.
      Els would have been playing about 5 pairings ahead of Tiger and Phil based on where he finished after round 2, so it's possible that Els finished his round and was just hanging with Feherty on the last hole. (I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but the entire field was 37 players, which is obviously very small. Maybe that smaller field makes for a more intimate/relaxed event where another player like Els would be more likely to go back out on to the course hang with Feherty...just a thought; the size of the event may have been irrelevant.) So, it's possible that Els was there with Feherty and made that comment, even though he was not Tiger's playing partner.
      In addition, this article from 2020 claims that it was Els who made the comment: www.nationalclubgolfer.com/news/tiger-woods-greatest-shot. It's based on Gary McCord's second-hand recollection of what occurred based off of what Feherty had told him (McCord was at the tournament, but didn't see the shot himself).
      This 2016 article, golfweek.usatoday.com/2016/12/07/ernie-els-recalls-best-shot-ever-saw-tiger-woods-hit, is supposedly based on Els' first-hand recollection. However, I think the accuracy of the article must be considered suspect, because it is clear that Els was not Tiger's playing partner.
      This 2011 article also claims Els was the playing partner, based on Feherty's story: www.yourgolftravel.com/19th-hole/tigers-top-ten-shots.
      On the other hand, Tiger personally tells the story of the shot from the bunker at the 2002 PGA Championship at Hazeltine here: www.cbssports.com/golf/news/tiger-woods-reminisces-about-greatest-feeling-shot-from-nearly-two-decades-ago-at-pga-championship. This includes the detail that after the shot from the bunker, he holed the put, and Els flipped him off. This makes it seem like this could have been when Els swore, but I couldn't definitively put Feherty on the course with Tiger and Els.
      So, it is clear that there is misinformation out there about this story, and I cannot tell where the truth lies. I do know that it really didn't matter what kind of lies Tiger had back then...that was a special time.
