Incredible Mini Earthship Style Cabin - Tiny Off Grid House with Solar Power

- In this video, we tour a mini earth ship style cabin at the Terra Perma community (terraperma.ca/en) to learn how the building is designed to produce heat, water, and power; all while being 100% off-grid.
The interior design of the tiny house is not only functional, but incredibly beautiful as well: It features relief cob sculptures on the interior walls, a dazzling recycled bottle wall, and floor to ceiling south facing windows.
The tiny home away from home was built using over 200 recycled tires that were filled with earth and stacked in a semi circle to create the main wall of the cabin. This wall was then covered (backfilled) with a mound of earth to create a thermal mass that will store energy from the sun and help keep the home at a stable temperature year-round.
To mitigate temperature fluctuations, there is a wood stove and radiant in-floor heating for cold months, and when it's warm out, there's a low-tech air conditioning system that cools indoor air by circulating it through a pipe that is buried under the mound of earth at the back of the house, and bringing it back into the house at a cooler temperature.
The metal roof is built on an angle to optimize rainwater collection (their rainwater ducts had not yet been installed when we were there), and the overhang at the front provides shade to the structure during the summer to avoid overheating.
To power the in-floor heating system, the air pump, the lights, and the electrical outlets, there is a 1000 Watt solar power system installed behind the cabin.
You'll notice that there is no toilet or shower inside the earthship. To keep things simple they built an outhouse toilet, and a communal shower block for all of the eco-lodges (kind of like what you'd find at a campground).
Terrasol is one of several miniature green building structures at Terra Perma that are rented to the public as vacation rentals. They're also a great way for people to experience living in different types of sustainable, hand built structures to see what living off grid is like. In addition to the earthship, they have a mini cob and straw bale house, 2 yurts, a tiny house, and a mini cordwood cabin.
Terra Perma has property lots for sale for anyone who wishes to live in the permaculture community, and they also have cooperative business opportunities for eco-entrepreneurs.
Mat and I met Elan from Terra Perma during the tiny house festival in Lantier, Quebec in July 2016 and adjusted our filming schedule to stop by and check out the super cool buildings he was helping to put up in Harrington, Quebec, Canada. We camped in our van at Terra Perma for 2 nights and had fun exploring their mini sustainable buildings, swimming in their private lake, and tasting their homemade maple syrup!

I love how earthships are nearly always designed to be both functional and beautiful. I've always felt earth ships to be a bit beyond our abilities (they are normally SO mansionlike!!) but this one is super inspiring in its compactness. It seems ever so slightyl more doable! CZcams earthship hut for a compact budget friendly option that actually is an earthship. This house is not technically an earthship because it requires supplemental heat.
I agree with all the points made here. I am very grateful to see a more reasonably sized earthship, instead of the more common, mosterous ones usually presented. They actually put me off of attempting it.

My inner hippie is really drawn to these sorts of communities! I'm kind of a weird mixture of introvert and extravert, so something about it really speaks to me. I think it's the fact that you can have your own space but then still be within a larger unit. So you can have your alone time when you want it and then be around other people when you're craving more social interaction. Perfect mixture.
It can be, but not always. I spent several days in a lovely cooperative community that seemed idyllic, until I listened to one of the founders tell me about a couple who moved in and then started to make all sorts of demands that the neighbors not turn over soil ( this was a farming community and everyone had a small garden as well as a large organic farm that was nearby. Everyone had to agree to each community project, This couple who never previously mentioned the heir severe allergies pretty much dictated what the neighbors could do on adjacent land. It made for a lot of bad feelings, and it took them several long years to move out. Another member got a great deal on some trees, but they took lo long to agree to plant them that they died. I don’t have that kind of patience. An HOA seems Draconian to me, If I want to hang out my underwear to dry,I don’t want to hear my neighbors complaints or pay a fine!

CasMullac I saw that. I suppose it works pretty well regardless of those low branches if it's providing the amount of energy they say it does in the cold season. What an interesting design.
CasMullac, not second guess the builders of this fascinating home, but the placement of the solar panels may have to do with thievery. Had an Uncle who placed his panels prominently on the top of his cabin in Western NC. One day they day tripped into Tennessee, came back the next day and they were gone. He bought a new set and placed them behind the cabin in the forest line and there they remain to this day.

I'm surprised that you don't see more living sun/shade screens on these earthships' southern exposures. That's where I'd grow my grapes, peas and green beans in the summer. I do like that they ran some heat-exchange pipe through the hill behind the place. You don't need much of a blower to move temperature-regulated air into the place.

If I remember right from my studies, the original designer of the Earthships moved away from the angled windows, because they were not necessary and caused some issues. One is that water had an easier time leaking into cracks which inevitably happened in places where the water pooled (like on some corners and edges). Keeping them vertical solved those problems and allowed the overhangs to work more easily. It also made them much easier to build.
Love more information about the tires and how they are used to attract and retain heat for the Earthship home. Brilliant reduce, reuse and recycle philosophy.
The earth packed around the house is not just a thermal mass for the sunlight heat energy, but a connector for underground earth temperature, thank you!!

It’s prob been said a thousand times... but deff would have put the earthship water system in~ catch rain water, store in sister water holding tank... then I would have built a small bathroom to the left or right of the main room, it would be tied into the earthship water system and all the water would have been used 3 times - basically a mini earthship ... which I’m super excited to see come about 🙏🏻💙

I love the earth ships. Unfortunately most county building codes in the US don't allow them. It's a shame building codes can't catch up with this 1000 year old technology. The one in this video is very nice.
You mean like my current code-approved house that is sheathed - not in plywood, and not in OSB, but in some kind of low density fiber board? You could literally get into my house with a carpet knife - vinyl siding, pressed paper board, then through drywall.
My next house will be a superadobe walled, timber framed, earth-bermed house. Code schmode...
I always laugh when people tell me about their steel doors and deadbolts and I'm thinking it would just be easier to kick in your wall.
New International Building Code 2018 has the code written for compressed earth block! Just use rammed earth instead of tires!

That's really awesome! I think they put the ventilation pipe into all the earth ships so the air in the house circulates it's not so much for heating or cooling but circulation of fresh air. But the pipe does help with heating and cooling.

It is beautiful that gives us good ideas about the front we building a sandbag house right now.. we started with the tires but then we decided to go with sandbags and already having four rows up making us very proud

Jason Van Mill The truth will be that the Camino Milagro De La Luz (Rio Grande Trail) will likely go by nearby so if you are on the trail of 500 miles from one end of the state to another, one of these might be a hostel or b and b luxury Earthship. Its one of the wonder areas of the state. Can't wait to get my credentials stamped.

It would have been so easy to add a small room with a compost toilet...outhouses are not fun in winter. I mean even these tiny 150 sq ft housescon trailers incorporate a compost toilet.

I spent this past weekend here with my son and a good friend of ours. It truly is a fantastic and peaceful retreat. We loved it! I will miss reading my books and having tea in the cozy glow of the woodstove in the evenings. Planning to build my own off-grid earthship style home in the future!

I really like Earthships. Combining one with Tiny House concepts is ambitious. They've done an admirable job on this one. They need to move that solar panel, or trim the vegetation, though.

Wow such a critical crowd from the credits. THis looks like a great way for people to come visit and test out off grid living. Also looks alike a fantastic option for someone who wants to be eco friendly but not live off grid -- a vacation home, guest house or retreat. I would love to see some of the plans f there are any.

This really isn't a mini-Earthship. It's a small cottage that takes some inspiration from an Earthship.
If it moved it would no longer be an EARTH ship.. duh! >.>
I concur needs to recycle water into a planter at the minimum to call yourself earthship.. Rainwater collection is also a staple, but as where I live there's not much of a necessity to collect rain water. Just call it a rammed earth studio..
Thank you for saying that. They got the tires right but Earthships also have a distinct look, with windows that face perpendicular to the winter sun's rays to allow the clay in the house to accumulate thermal mass

Many years ago I read in a boating magazine about a cooling system that circulates lake/ocean water instead of using Freon and a compressor. Don't remember if it was a one-off or commercially available. (of course it would only work in cool/temperate climates unless it was a modified heat pump)
Why no food production greenhouse IN the rental? (Granted it migot need a caretaker for when there is nobody staying there, but who wouldn't be willing to volunteer to live there/stay close by??? Count me in, shall lol

In colder climates, would not a Rocket Mass Heater be a better idea than a wood stove? It uses the idea of thermal mass to store the heat, just like walls of earth, possibly eliminating the need for the under-floor piping. Also the combustion chamber is much more efficient and puts out little if any waste heat or pollution, and it can use twigs, or just about anything else for its fuel (small dried plant matter etc. would even work.)

Not knowing when this video was shot and angles used in the clip of the PV arrays but they appeared to be partially shaded which could drastically reduce their output. Other than that this is one fantastic cottage!!!
