    Lyrics:
    [Robert Zubrin]
    Mars is the next logical step
    In our space program
    It's the challenge that's been staring us in the face
    For the past 30 years
    It has water, it has carbon,
    It has a 24 hour day
    It has geothermal energy
    Mars is a place we can settle
    [Carl Sagan]
    There is a giant rift in its surface
    5,000 kilometers long
    There is a volcano as wide as Arizona
    [Zubrin]
    So there's the choice in life
    One either grows or one decays
    Grow or die
    I think we should grow
    [Sagan]
    Mars is a world of wonders
    [Brian Cox]
    It has canyons, river valleys,
    and giant ice sheets
    [Sagan]
    Mars is a world of wonders
    [Zubrin]
    It shouldn't be humans to Mars in 50 years
    It should be humans to Mars in 10
    We either muster the courage to go
    Or we risk the possibility of stagnation and decay
    We've got cosmic radiation
    Zero gravity
    Martian dust storms
    Back contamination
    But these are dragons that we can take on
    [Sagan]
    In our time we have sifted
    The sands of Mars
    Established a presence there
    And fulfilled a century of dreams
    [Cox]
    The Mars rovers have really
    Captured our imaginations
    They genuinely are explorers
    In the old-fashioned sense
    [Zubrin]
    If you put out a call
    For volunteers for the first crew to Mars
    They'd be lined up coast to coast
    (refrain)
    [Cox]
    Mars is a dry frozen version of our home
    Covered in red dust and sand
    [Penelope Boston]
    At one time
    In the ancient past
    Mars was very similar
    To the conditions of early earth
    [Zubrin]
    There will always be people with new ideas
    On how humans should live together
    [Cox]
    We now have "eyes" and "ears" on the surface
    [Zubrin]
    What's left after you go is
    The good you've left behind
    You have to believe in hope
    You have to believe in the future
    There are more and more people coming around to the point of view that
    A positive future for humanity requires human expansion to space
    (refrain)
    We're at a crossroads today
    We either muster the courage to go
    Or we risk the possibility of stagnation and decay

It might sound silly and cheesy but they really help me see the beauty and "magic" that does exist in the world, making it a bit easier for me to want to stay a while longer. They really can provoke such intense feelings.

      Kevin, that is absolutely wonderful. We need great minds like yours to help us further our knowledge and give us courage to expand our horizons. One day we will eventually leave Mother Earth and swim in that beautiful star ocean. It's because of your dedication that we will one day do this. I'm so glad that another person feels so deeply moved by these songs and help them achieve what many would feel is impossible. Goddess Bless you, Kevin. Continue to help us take the next tenuous steps into our cosmos.

      He was advocating for humans to head to Mars by 2020, not predicting it. There were never any plans at that time. We didn't miss some deadline. He gave that statement before commercial spaceflight was even a thing. Much has changed, and there are already multiple plans in motion. Also, he was advocating government to do this. That longer appears to be the likely case.

The important thing is that we've been able to get to this point without destroying ourselves first. • @badbeardbill9956
      @badbeardbill9956 Před 7 lety

      I'm not saying you'd do it really fast or anything, you'd have loads of time.
      You can get the oxygen from a variety of places. If we master fusion, we could harvest the gas/ice giants and GAIN energy as we create oxygen, and then combine it with hydrogen for water. Same for nitrogen and most other elements... Until you get to iron, but if I recall, that's the heaviest element in biology, so we should be fine.
      The VAST majority of the mass of these habitats will be shielding. Even so, from a mass perspective they are more efficient than planets.
      And if we don't master fusion, there's enough water and ice in the moons of Jupiter alone that we could easily support hundreds of billions of people.

    • @badbeardbill9956
      @badbeardbill9956 Před 7 lety +1

      Except tritium has a half life of only twelve years. There's not much of it ANYWHERE.
      No, we're looking to fuse anything into anything. Mainly hydrogen/deuterium into helium. But helium can be fused into higher elements with hydrogen/itself. This process, should we master it, is the energy of the stars themselves. Then, we can get elements all the way up to iron while gaining energy.
      And most of the shielding could be hydrogen, which is extremely abundant...

    • @badbeardbill9956
      @badbeardbill9956 Před 7 lety +1

      For the immediate future, yes. But I'm not referring to the immediate future. Or the near future. I'm referring to technology that is possible. It isn't even truly required, of course. But it would be a great hthing to have. Hell, we don't even NEED to use fusion for it, if we're willing to lose energy while transmuting elements. It's totally doable, and potentially very worthwhile, if we get a crap-load of extra energy. Using particle colliders you can transmute elements, and a few other devices can do it as well. It's how we make plutonium from uranium. That's if we have a large amount of extra energy...
      In fact, some groups are pursuing proton-boron fusion.
      Building machines to sustain that heat may not be necessary, if we can use it in some sort of pulse, like cars. Car engines cannot sustain the heat in their combustion chambers, and yet they are able to get high temperatures in said chambers. This is because it's only hot for a very short period of time. There simply isn't enough time for the heat to transfer over.
      Again, it's not totally necessary, but it would certainly help out quite a bit. For example, Ernest Rutherford transmuted nitrogen into oxygen back in 1919 (almost 100 years ago). It was likely only a very small number of atoms, and probably took a lot of energy at that... but it's doable, and we can still fuse the lighter elements to get energy out of them.

    We need to find a practical way to magnify mars magnetic field. Then we can cook up a series of microbes to alter the atmosphere, so we can start terra-forming the planet.

    • @HALLish-bl3bm
      @HALLish-bl3bm Před 9 lety +5

      No need to tackle the magnetic field issue until its been terraformed, rate of atmospheric striping is very slow.
      The fastest way to terraform would be industrial CFC production, ammonia/ice meteor bombardment, nuking the south pole or solar mirrors.
      Microbes need to wait until we have at least outgassed some captured CO2.

    • @SpookyZalost
      @SpookyZalost Před 9 lety +2

      it's actually easier than you think, a web of geostationary satellites with enough energy could create an artificial magnetic bubble around the planet to protect it, we have the tech for this, but the satellites would have to be replaced after a geomagnetic storm.

    • @Ezackiel1
      @Ezackiel1 Před 9 lety +1

    • @KASASpace

      SpookyZalost You don't have to though. The rate of atmospheric loss is so small...
      Seriously.

    • @SpookyZalost
      @SpookyZalost Před 9 lety

      well yes, but you would need a thicker atmosphere to compensate for the radiation bursts from the sun, so it would probably be a good idea to put one up anyway.

    We need another JFK.
    "However, I think we're going to do it, and I think that we must pay what needs to be paid. I don't think we ought to waste any money, but I think we ought to do the job. And this will be done in the decade of the sixties. It may be done while some of you are still here at school at this college and university. It will be done during the term of office of some of the people who sit here on this platform. But it will be done. And it will be done before the end of this decade."

      Well it's not Trump. He wants to reorganize NASA, to make sure what they are doing. If he isn't reelected NASA could be stuck between investigations. So.. Vote Clinton, she even wanted to be an asteronaut once.

    • @amihartz
      @amihartz Před 7 lety

      H5 Okay? I vote for people I want to be president, not for people who are less shit than some other person. Specifically with NASA, Democrats are historically the worst in funding NASA and the sciences in general.

    • @random3857
      @random3857 Před 7 lety +1

      Amelia Hartman We need Another JFK, we won't get one if people vote on who they want. Trump will not be anything like JFK, Clinton probably not either but at least we can try with her. And the fact is that if Trump shuts down NASA ops' to reorganise them then he will delay them, they don't need that.

    1:47, "If you put a call for volunteers they will be lined up coast to coast"
    That turned out to be an understatement. A company that is planning a one way trip to mars to try and colonize it put out a call for normal everyday people to volunteer and they got volunteers from all over the globe, even though they were told they had a highly improbable chance of coming back. We as a species are explorers and we as a species want to go and explore space, and yet one of the greatest obstacles is ourselves as a species.

    I read an article in a science magazine some time ago where they explained that cancer was only one of many concerns regarding space radiation. It also includes damage to the nervous system, and travelling to Mars will most likely kill 5% of the cells in your body without more protection than we currently have. Launch costs are a serious issue, because larger crafts are required to make a city. Unless you mine it all, which takes a lot more time than you'd expect.

    “What’s left after you go is the good you left behind.” I think that line explains part of why we haven’t left for Mars yet. For all the bad things Earth has, there’s still a lot of good things worth remembering and holding on to, and we would be leaving the world that, for millions of years, we’ve called home.

    i'm 29 years old, and i can honestly say, i don't think there will be a manned mission to mars within my lifetime. it's kind of sad when you think about it. do i support a manned mission to mars? absolutely. i firmly believe that for humanity to survive as a species, we must leave earth and venture forth out into the stars.
    to show my support for this cause, i am starting college in the spring to study in the areas of astronomy, physics, and engineering. i will do my part in this endeavor.
