Making The Mitre Saw Station

  • In this video I finish making the mitre saw station. I start by making a mobile tool cart to hold my bench belt and disc sander which will be stored underneath the miter station. I also make a hood to sit over the saw, and a dust ramp to guide the saw dust in to the dust collection drawer. I trim up the plywood edges using some hardwood, and also add a fence and stop block system and tape measure so that I can make repeatable accurate cuts. Finally, I add dust shrouds to both the hood and the cabinets beneath utilising a clever idea from one of my viewers!

Loved the video! I did nearly the exact same thing with my miter station hood not two days ago, including the overhang and reinforcing the thin panel. The fenceless t-track setup is the way to go, I'm hoping to get mine done this weekend. And I'm getting one of those flippy stop blocks now. Thanks!

Ended up looking a treat, great job, and using reclaimed and second hand items I'm sure cut down the costs significantly. I much prefer seeing a useful, no nonsense station than a showpony, not inferring anything against the finish of yours....it's just much more practical for everyday use. Unfortuantely I'm ultra limitied for space, or I'd look at building the same you've made up. Love the passive collection drawer, the dust generating monsters seem to get stuff everywhere....no matter how hard you try to collect it.
P.S. do love the videos of all your projects...straight forward, no bs, and always an awesome result!!!!

  • @donjohnson24

Hi Keith. Like you, I did not want a backrest on the worktop upon which my mitre station is mounted as I also had a lathe on the worktop that I could occasionally move forward to use. I had moveable 'risers' on each side that lifted my workpieces up to the level of the mitre platform, which had rotatable stops at each side for setting repeated measurements when a riser was clamped to the worktop. This worked OK, but was fiddly to set, so your solution of putting a track and measure on the support SURFACE appealed to me. I got another five-foot length of worktop cheaply, and after cutting slots for the T Track and Tape on the table saw, mounted it at the correct height on the left side of the mitre saw - I moved both risers to the right. I got a stop similar to yours, and it works a treat!
I have not been able to attach the tape measure yet as the stop - APPARENTLY JUST LIKE YOURS - that I ordered from Amazon will not arrive until December 2nd!
Revisiting my order to see if there was any way to speed up the order, I realised that your UK link amzn.to/2VZCzJG took me to a SIMILAR stop to yours, but WITHOUT the adjustable indicator to set to the tape.
*** A stop WITH the adjustable indicator is at www.amazon.co.uk/KUNSE-Aluminium-Alloy-T-track-Woodworking/dp/B07KR638ZG/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Precision+45+Type+Miter+Track+Stop+Aluminium+Alloy+For+45mm+T-Slot+T-track+Woodworking+DIY+Tool&qid=1574007057&sr=8-1
They both seem to come from the USA in view of their long delivery times.
I've tried to change my order but will not hold my breath!
If I have to accept the existing stop, I guess I can attach an adjustable indicator to it - and the one I have already - but it is very frustrating not being able to mount the tape measure until after December 2nd when I will know what allowance to make for the indicator.
As an addendum, I realised that my lathe would just cover the T Track even when pushed backwards. I never really liked that lathe, and sold it cheaply, so I can get a nice new - smaller but electronically speed controlled one - for my upcoming Christmas (and birthday in January!) present!

Plenty of ideas in this project. For the same reason as you, I prefer a fence-less mitre station - there's too much useful space on the top and fancy fences just seem to get in the way. It would be interesting to know your thoughts in a couple of months time on the effectiveness of a passive collection system vs using the draw for storage. @ianpearse4480 Před 4 lety

Great video series. Could I make a suggestion about your t-track?
You said you added some track so you could make shorter cuts, but implied that the cut length was still limited to a minimal length of 300mm approximately.
You could use a preset block to offset that gap.
    Example:
340mm gap with a 240mm block makes a 100mm cut. 340mm gap with a 340mm block equals no gap at all.
    Extension:
I set my ruler at 12 inches back from the blade and then have a 12 inch block which I set at the start of the ruler as point zero, I can then measure any gap I can read off the ruler to set my stop and that is the length of my cut.

Sheet goods, actually all wood prices have sky-rocketed here in the US due to COVID-19. Thankfully I'm a scrounger and have quite a collection of various thicknesses I've accumulated over the years. I see you have quite a bit yourself. People may snub us for checking skiffs and roadsides, but we have the wood many can't afford now. How are the prices of wood in the UK? Have they too gone up? I love this cabinet/rolling cart idea and I'm building my new Radial arm saw station with either room for lots of drawers or a rolling cart. I haven't decided yet. The RAS will be set up with a dado stack because I can't use a dado stack on the model DW475 saw I have. I hear they did improve the arbor on the newer model.

5:36 I know you know what you're doing and all, but from this perspective that made me get VERY uncomfortable. 😆

Is that Dylan? He (or she) makes a good su-purr-visor. 🐺 I think your girlfriend made an unscheduled appearance as well. I could see an extra shirt in some of the frames. It's nice she takes an interest in your work too!

His girlfriend had her arms crossed - maybe he's spending too much time in his new shop! 😀

I guess I misunderstood what he said in an earlier comment. He mentioned "she"....I guess he was referring to his girlfriend...not the cat. Lol. He had 2 helpers in this video then....lol.

Well done. You didn't need to concern yourself over the T-track being closer to the saw. The Evening Woodworker (czcams.com/video/lNRQ42qDPmc/video.html) created a simple one foot block to used as a standard. He even had a tape measure that had two readings for this accommodation.
