Nikon D3300 - maybe the best camera in its series!

- In this video I review the Nikon D3300 and compare it with the other popular cameras in the Nikon D3000 series, particularly the Nikon D3400. I like Nikon D3300 a lot. It is offering 24 Mpix and no low pass filter. This gives its sensor great resolution and detail. The Nikon D3300 is small and easy to handle, the photo quality is impressive. Unlike the later models in this series the D3300 still has sensor cleaning system by vibration and an external microphone port. This makes it prefferable to the later models. I'll show you the camera and talk about its main functions as well as pros and cons. You'll see sample photos and sample video taken by Nikon D3300. Overall I like Nikon D3300 recommend it to the novices and more experienced users alike.

The D3300 was my first 'real' camera and has been with me to all continents but Antarctica. I took some of my best shots with it and it never ceased to amaze me regarding image quality. That CMOS 24 MP sensor is no joke.
Later I used the D3300 to film dozens of videos for a YT channel I had.
And even today it stays in service: I scan my film negatives on my copy stand with it (It absolutely outperforms my Fuji XT30ii which I used in the beginning for that).

I was inches away from buying a friends Canon Rebel T5i when another photographer friend said,Go Nikon.The Nikon was 35% cheaper.I was stunned later to learn that the D3300 has a much better DXO sensor mark score of 82 than even Canons Rebel T7 which is four years newer. My photographer friend told me that Nikon use bigger sensors and they are made by Sony.
@@david777ism Hi! Yes that's true, the crop sensors that Nikons use are a bit larger than Canon's crop sensors. I'm sure Canons are also very nice cameras overall but I've remained loyal to Nikon, too, as far as dSLRs go. Have fun with your D3300! It's a very inspiring camera.

I have the D3300 which I bought recently and am very pleased with it. I like the external microphone jack for video work. Lenses are widely available secondhand for a reasonable cost.
Hi! Thanks a lot for watching. You are absolutely correct. The lenses that you can buy for this camera are really affordable and absolutely great. I particularly like the Nikkor AF-S 50mm F/1.8 G. Although this is a full frame lens I like it even more with a crop sensor camera. Best of luck to you with your D3300!
Best Nikon in their 3000 range.They made rare mistakes by removing features in subsequent models.The external mic port is so much more important than Bluetooth.I was very surprised to read that this D3300 blows even Canons Rebel T7, which is four years newer,out of the water with a DXO sensor mark score of 82 .This camera can take stunning images. Maybe due to the larger sensor with no low pass filter and made by Sony.
@@tom_photo The camera came with the kit AF-S Nikkor 18-55 f3.5-5.6 G II ED DX and I bought an AF-S 55-200 f 4-5.5 G ED DX. I wasn't really clued up on the lenses but I don't regret buying these. I've bought a third lens AF-S 35 f1.8G DX which I've been using for video work. I have a CZcams channel and I'm wanting some different angles and depth of field than I was able to achieve with my old GoPro Hero 7 Black. Thanks.
@@david777ism Thanks David, I was advised to get the D3300 by a professional photographer who said it was a great starter DSLR that I'd probably not grow out of. The more I read and watch I'm realising what a good purchase it has been for me.
@@anotherangleUK Hi! The lenses you have are very nice. I've been using Nikkor AF-S 50mm F/1.8 G with this camera ( czcams.com/video/cz1i38ZGQ5U/video.html ). Although this is a full frame camera lens it works so well with the crop sensor cameras. The bokeh you get with it is really fine. Thank you for pointing out your own CZcams channel. This is the best made, most important and most relevant review of this camera and the D3000 series and it will help a lot of people to make a better decision. You are correct.Bluetooth is not a real benefit.This camera was so well designed.The battery can be removed from below while still mounted on a tripod and the SD card is so easy to remove from the side.Why waste the battery with Bluetooth ? The D3300 with it's external microphone port is by far the best in the series.I was very close to buying a Canon Rebel T5i but a professional photographer friend said go Nikon. I bought a Nikon D3300 for 35% less and was shocked to discover later that it has a much better DXO sensor mark score of 82 than even Canons Rebel T7 which is four years newer. It blows the Canon T7 out of the water on image quality. Nikon used carbon fibre reinforced plastic for this body. It is so strong and light. I think the D3300 looks great and feels very comfortable in the hand. I also learned that Nikon use a Sony sensor for this camera. Maybe this bigger Sony sensor and no low pass filter is why this camera can take such good photographs.Thank you for another fantastic video.
Hi! These are all very good points and highlight why the Nikon dSLRs are so good. I've been truly amazed with the quality of plastic they use. I don't think I've ever seen a unit with lots of ugly scratches. They did such a good job especially with the D3300. Kind regards!
so glad i found this video - i have had a red d3300 since 2015/16ish and i havent used it in years and years now. i am starting to get into photography again (but properly and detailed this time) and was tossing up whether or not i needed to sell it and buy a modern camera! this video has taught me that wont be necessary while im still learning

Great video, excelent review! A few months back I bought a couple of D3000 very cheap and with less than 4000 clicks on each! I wanted to experience / explore the CCD sensors which were discontinued after the D3000. Now you've whetted my appetite for a D3300. I'll go hunting for it!

I read somewhere that the d3400 and d3500 have a different sensor from the d3300. DPreview samples make it look like the D3400 captures more detail at high ISO till you download the RAW and look at the Exif data showing 2/3 stop faster shutter speeds for the D3300, so likely lower than indicated true ISO for the D3400
Hi Zeta! Thank you for your question. I'm not familiar with this particular phenomenon. These three cameras (D3300, D3400, D3500) were produced at different times and it's very likely that there are some very small differences in the sensor architecture. The software is also slightly different and the JPEG may be produced with a slightly different algorithm. The differences, however, are small and I see them at the level of JPEG files but not at the level of raw files. And it's difficult to say which is better because this boils down to personal preference. I bought this as my first ever DSLR 5 months ago. I bought it for 150euro in mint condition with only ~2000 shutter count. So far, I shot with nikkor 18-70mm (~50euro) and I didn't really like the image quality even if it's upgraded kit lens. Do you have any recommendations for standard zooms that would perform better? Indeed I did cheap out on lens but i'm simply not sure what to get because at the time, better standard zooms would all cost 4x more. Overall, this camera body is 9/10 for beginners, much better than what Canon and Sony offer at this pricepoint. Only things I don't like about this body is questionable build quality (some parts are great but some are made very poorly) and no flip screen.
Hi Danilo! Thank you for asking. Have you considered its native AF-S 18-55mm or AF-P 18-55mm. I have compared these lenses (czcams.com/video/6N0IjFZddfs/video.html). One of the sharpest lens that I very much like to use with D3300 is the AF-S 50 mm F/1.8 (czcams.com/video/cz1i38ZGQ5U/video.html). It's a full frame lens but it works so well with the D3300 - very sharp indeed. If you want better image quality then prime lenses are better. Kind regards!
I have the same camera and the 18-70 and 18-55 VR II and the 35mm. The 35 mm is the sharpest but the others are not bad. Please check if you use the optimal settings in your camera.
@@33antonius Maybe it's only my perception, this is my first DSLR and maybe I have too high expectations that everything will be sharp even at 100% zoomed in. As for settings, I shoot RAW with denoise off, active d-light off and every other assistance off as well as neutral post process preset (although I think all these apply only to JPGs). I use AF-A (both single servo and continuous modes), Single center focus point when shooting with viewfinder (85% of the time) and normal/face detect when shooting with live screen. I will definitely get either 35mm either 50mm prime because they are much better performers in low light and sharpness, I just haven't decided which one yet. 35mm is definitely more versatile but 50mm is better for portraits and looks sharper on tests and reviews.
@@danilojonic These are light cameras. To avoid image blur use the 18-55 VR II. Otherwise you need to use 1/250sec and higher ISO. JPEG's standard fine with sharpness to 7 and active daylighting on produce better results than I am able to achieve in lightroom with RAW. - 0,3 exposure correction, base ISO around 200. F8. Do this and the images will be super sharp and comparable to d610 with primes RAW and so on (except for higher ISO' s of course). Let us know!
@@danilojonic Neutral Picture control is used to maximize RD and exposition accuracy in order to work PP in deep the raw. Therefore the contrast, saturation, sharpening etc are very low and the direct out of camera results lack punch. But it gives you a lot of room to work in raw. If you do not post process your files in deep you can use rather Landscape or Vivid. Personally I like Standard with a little bit more contrast and sharpness.
Camera blur with a 24Mpx camera and a non stabilized lens as the 18-70 would be also a problem, specially if you do not have a good shooting discipline, therefore, as stated below try to use speeds over 1/200 specially in the tele part
At last but not at least, take care of aperture. Because of the high density of pixels, these cameras suffer quite a lot of diffraction, resulting in less sharp images. Ideally, work around f/8. In a hurry you can use f/11 but you start to lose sharpness. At f/16 the images look blurry because of that
Thanks for the review, i just brought of cabinet my 10 years old DSLR D3300, 18-55, 55-200, and 35 mm prime lenses, which is barely used, Please give your suggestion, should i update the firmware or not, i have read reviews where people are complaining that after update the pictures became grainy. Pls
Hi Shikhar! Thank you for asking. I would certainly update camera firmware, this is a good thing to do. The photos get grainy for other reasons. The D3XXX series of cameras is quite sensitive to high ISO (czcams.com/video/6BsZ_H_JE6k/video.html). The main reason people see grainy photos is because ISO was too high. Kind regards!

Hi! Thank you for asking. This depends what your requirements are. If you need 4K, 60 fps and high bitrate then your best bet is a semi-modern hybrid camera. Hybrid cameras tend to be better at just about every aspect of video. My favorite budget camera for video is Fuji X-T30 (czcams.com/video/OuV0ydLM20w/video.html). It offers incredible video in a very small package for a good price. Many people would direct you to Sony hybrid cameras but I'm not an expert on Sony, I use Fujifilm and Nikon. Kind regards!
I'm in a bind and I need your advice! I have the option of buying a D3300 with 6000 clicks for 200 euros and a D300S with 13800 clicks for 210 euros. The D300S comes with a battery grip (included in the price). Which one would you go for? The D3300 has 24 MPixels vs 12.3 MPixels of the 300S. It also has higher ISO capability - 12800 vs 3200 for the 300S. I rate the focusing system of the D300S superior because of the 51 focusing points vs 11 for the 3300.
The prices are basically the same as for the higher ISO capability of the D3300 it doesn't mean much to me. I attribute more importance to focusing.

Hi! Thank you for asking. I think I'd get the D3300. It's superior is many ways and newer technology. Sure the D300S is weather sealed, can do shutter speeds 1/8000 and its shutter mechanism might last a bit longer etc. But it's much larger and heavier than the D3300 and has the anti-aliasing filter. Both cameras are very good but I'd personally prefer the D3300. Kind regards!

Hi Fiedler! Thank you for asking. All three cameras are nice. However I'd say the Nikon models you are mentioning are ahead of that particular Canon model. So for me it would boil down to choosing between the D3300 and D3400. I have reviewed both cameras separately and on March 24th I'm posting a video where I compare the photo quality of these cameras. Considering buying a Nikon D5000, I currently use a D70S and unfortunately it’s dying on me so I need something new but can’t afford these $3k cameras. I do car photography, would a D5000 be a good option?

Thanks for the video. Is the metering accurate in P,A and S modes? Coming from a bridge camera with a live histogram in the viewfinder I'm worried I won't know when to use exposure compensation without it.
Hi! Thanks for asking. I'd say that the metering is quite good actually. Sure it sometimes doesn't get the metering absolutely right but overall it's not bad at all. My observation with the Nikon D3000 series is that they tend to overexpose a bit. Just like my Fujis tend to underexpose a bit. These Nikons were optimized for printing (they print really well). Is there a way to have the histogram in live view so I don't have to take so many pictures to get the exposure right with this camera?

Hi! Thank you for your question. What matters even more than the camera is the lens. For product photography, you might be interested in a 35mm or 50mm lens. The D3300 is a good choice for product photography. It's capable and has a very good price. However, what it lacks is a tilting screen. You might like a tilting screen for photographing products. You might also appreciate a good manual focusing option such as focus peaking. So, as much as I like the D3300, I recognize that hybrid cameras might be better for product photography. I use the Fujifilm X-T20 for product photography (czcams.com/video/cdqteCyNwdc/video.html). It is a bit more expensive than the D3300, though. Fujifilm X-T10 is very similar but more affordable (czcams.com/video/sHMhZ6HMZwk/video.html). Kind regards!

I got it for just below $150 on a fairly good condition, and god the low light performance is very good at its price
Edit: i got the camera with the AF-P kit lens, the autofocus is very fast for just an old kit lens

3300 or 5200?
Hi! Thank you for asking. The D3300 is newer technology, smaller and has a better battery life. Then again the D5200 has an articulated screen and more functions. What sets them apart for me is that the D3300 does not have a low pass filter and that's a bonus. All things considered I'd personally prefer the D3300. Kind regards!
I have both. The D5200 has the articulated monitor and more custom settings, but the D3300 is also a great camera. I use both equally.
