The 00's had a lot of pop songs with harmonically minimalist and quiet verses but at the same time intricate arrangements. What a Girl Wants is a great example of this with the random fills and background instruments fading in and out. This gives the song a rhytmic and kind of unpredictable feel. Christina also sings the verses in a more free form RnB style, while the chorus is sung in a straightforward pop style, matching the more focused chorus. I miss this kind of subtlety in pop music. By 2010, pop music had become very structured with constantly emphasized harmonies, and very little breathing room or variation.
