@Aaron Sirkman Whether I agree or disagree with Potato's opinions is irrelevant to me. I started watching his videos because he understands Civ 6 well and is able to explain complex issues relating to the game clearly. While he is blathering on about something completely unrelated to Civ 6 I am not learning anything that will help me play the game better, so I now have a 5 minute blathering-tolerance limit. If Potato doesn't get back to talking about the game within this time limit, I stop watching the series and wait for the next one to start.

Discussing things like these are so important. And also to come in to said discussion with empathy and an open mind. Anger, insults and not being willing to hear where the person you disagree with is coming from will lead nowhere. People that are hurt and lost will always seek help and answers somewhere, and some just end up in hateful cest-pools of ”alpha males” that gives easy answers to hard problems. Thank you and great content as always ✨

Love and hate have become ever increasingly intertwined in today's society.
People with closed minded ideas think that their way is right, and people would be better off following suit. (Love/hate)
People who insist that their mind is open usually want to make the close minded person open up to their ideas for the betterment of society. (Love/Hate)
Each is trying to help the other, each is despised by the other.
We are also absolutely drunk on certainty.
We constantly search for truth and try to be in the rat race of certainty. When in reality, nothing is certain. The consequences of learning too much is coming to the realization that you know nothing.

    Loved the "TED Talk", Potato!
My rant: I'm 34, went through a phase of thinking the PUA community was worth listening to, saw exactly what you said about the nugget of truth buried in their bullshit. Spent 4 years in the US Marine Corps too, was drawn to that branch specifically because of the macho culture bs. Yeah, the easy answers are attractive, and most of us get drawn to them at least for a little while, but I feel that, at least in the US (don't have experience with the rest of the world) we're basically trained for that growing up. Our whole school system is based on us being given answers or finding the answers that have already been established. Sure you can get some more critical thought in high school (grades 9-12 in the US) but that's mostly 11-12th and patterns have already been set. We're basically taught to think within a set framework and expect answers to be readily available, even if we have to work a bit for them, and then we get out into adulthood and find that everything is a complicated mess. It's no wonder so many people retreat to easy answers and a bunker mentality - it's the safety of what we were raised with. Add in that there are many families that do not encourage their children to think for themselves and the problem gets worse.
I think it's part of why Gen Z is so engaged in ways prior generations were not at their age. They've had social media to show them the chaos and get exposure to the reality that many questions have no easy answers. They've been going into things prepared for the challenge in a way those of us before them didn't get. I just wish it didn't involve so much devastation for them to deal with, and I hope we can make things less painful for the generations to follow without losing that benefit.

People want there to be some kind of checklist or score that if you get a certain number of ticks or points on you are affirmed as a man or woman or adult or whatever it is desirable to be. Life would be easy if we all had experience levels and hitting that max lvl meant you won the game. Thankfully, such a thing does exist, a little thing called building a 6 desert hills Petra. Fellas, it is what the ladies like, that big fat Petra, and ladies, men will notice your big Petra energy too. As a guy who is writing an ethnographic study into cultural suicide in South Korea, i am from Denmark. I think I have a bit of a leg to stand on when it comes to the funny discussion about masculinity.
Masculinity and femininity are derived from culture. As the old Creeks used to say about the Arabs "they are so feminine, because they wear pants". 2000 years ago it was a feminine trait to wear pants.
These ideas are not harmless. The rate of men who committ suicide because they feel like they are not lifting the burden of being man, as in "being a provider" is horrifying. This can be said about women in China, they have a high rate of young women who committ suicide because they feel like they have failed as women, because they were still single.
I agree with you potato, if those pick up artists wants money then it is a god daumn scam. I was lucky and I found my wife on the internet on an international chat site. I went to study in Beijing, she came to meet me, traveled the 1000km to do so, and when I had issues with the hospitals, she called in sick to help me. Then I knew that her heart is just as big as my heart. Then I went back to China as an exchange student and we tried living together, and most things went well. My philosophy is, love is not enough for a relationship. You might be compatible at 99% of the things but that 1% can mess it up. If that 1% is, I don't want childrens ever, then those 99% might not matter at all.

Thank you so much for your great content Potato! Have been watching your vids for a few years but not because I'm the biggest civ player. Instead it's your mix of awesome civ gameplay and tips combined with sometimes hilariously funny (Mein Haaandy 😂😂) and sometimes dead serious discussions about life (like in this video) that got me totally hooked on your content. Keep up the awesome work!

Ya interesting take and mostly agree. The breakdown of those traditional male/female is definitely happening! And in some ways its good, in other ways bad.. it seems to cause kids/young adults more confusion/anxiety as they're trying to figure out who they are. There science backing up that the more options we have the more anxiety we'll have. Like if you go to a restaurant and could have literally any drink possible how do even begin to decide what to have. It can be mentally/emotionally easier to have less options. So when you have a society that says do whatever you want, it can be limiting to some/many people in really figuring out who they are and where & how they fit society. . So i do think theres benefits to maintaining some general gender roles, but its not like we need to care if someone doesnt align with it

And regarding being a man stuff: I'd say its a lot more about taking on responsibilities, beyond just yourself. As a opposed to the 'macho' approach

Eons of evolution (substitute creation or intelligent design if you prefer) mostly dictate what it means to be a man or a woman. People like to think they are masters of their own destinies, but genetics doesn't care about your feelings. Societies over the centuries have modified roles back and forth and there's always exceptions, but male and female biologies are different for a reason and accepting one's role tends to be the most fulfilling for most people.

    • @hi-i-am-atan
      @hi-i-am-atan Před rokem +7

@@jarink1 there's a lot to unpack here, but perhaps the foremost is how you go out of your way to anthromorphize evolution and genetics to glorify a strict binary ... when humans display significantly _less_ sexual dimorphism in comparison to not only our evolutionary relatives, but many animals w/ distinct sexes as a whole. and the dimorphism we _do_ display is largely non-genetic! you don't even have to get into external hormone therapy to see this; moobs are such a common phenomenon that we _have a word like moobs in our vulgate,_ and the genetic pool in places like the mediterranean and india say it's not at all out of the ordinary for women to grow mustaches
like. yeah. genetics doesn't care about your feelings. so it could not give less of a shit whether or not you comply to the social phenomenon we've created with our own hands. it doesn't give much of a shit about anything, really. it's the sorta thing that randomly decides it'd be funny to make a goat with two heads, then fucks off to go back to bed while all its mad science experiments go about doing whatever they want

    (Wall of text warning.)
I'm not a man and I've never been expected to be one or to become one, so I'm not sure what it means to be a man. However, I can speak to struggling to search and understand one's feelings. One helpful thing I learned when I was young was my feelings come from my thoughts. Occasionally those thoughts are big-brained and rational, but they're usually a half-formed, jump-to-conclusions kind of thought. I feel fear easily because it's easy for me to assume something will lead to harm somehow.
"If this happens, something will go wrong." Uh, like what? "...Something!" Those thoughts reveal a general fear of the unknown, but I can talk it down easily with a "if you can't think of anything concrete, then there's nothing to worry about, actually."
"If this happens, then x," x being a truly dreadful outcome. If I am able, I tend to share this with someone I trust: my parents, my boyfriend, a close friend. Typically, x is actually an unlikely outcome that my creative mind came up with, but sometimes I need another perspective to realize that.
Wait, actually, I am going to speak to "what even is manhood?" by speaking to "what even is womanhood?" I have always loved stories with multiple female characters who are distinct from each other. I think that's why, for example, my high school friends successfully got me into My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. A woman or girl can be caring and motherly, or blunt and awkward with feelings. A woman/girl can love to dress pretty, love to dress cool, or not care how she dresses at all. A woman/girl can love to learn and read, be really into science, love fairy tales, struggle to learn, find fairy tales boring, be good at writing, or any combination thereof. They're all still women. It's fine to be different and it's also fine to be like other girls, because other girls aren't as shallow as scam artists want us to think. A woman can be anything she wants to. Likewise, a man can be anything he wants to. It's fine, actually.

There are plenty of scammers and bad ideas out there, but the idea that a person MUST be a scammer because they are being paid for ("selling") teaching... is fundamentally false, not true. Sure, most (including virtually every hired teacher and professor, such as in schools and colleges) are scammers, but the idea that "if a person is being paid for their profession then they MUST be a scammer," is obviously false.
Potato, as awesome as he is, only can "give away his time/teaching for free" if his financial needs are somehow met another way, and not all people have that luxury. I teach for free, including about beliefs, because I am financially independent from my own business. However, before I was so wealthy, I sometimes had to charge. I still teach the same things. My ideas cannot be both true and false at the same time.
If Potato added paid coaching for Civ 6 by the hour, his information would probably (definitely, basically) still be very helpful and not a scam. Same would go for if he made a paid course for excelling in Civ 6. A hypothetical paid course by Potato could easily include various beliefs, such as that you can learn to win on Deity if you have the right attitude and practice, and those beliefs would, once again, not be necessarily false or a scam.

There's a song from the 90s called "Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen" it's one of the best songs for advice on earth. One of the sections goes
"Be careful whose advice you buy but be patient with those who supply it
Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past
From the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts
And recycling it for more than it's worth"
As far as the "how to be gender here" we really should have easy positive templates for people as not everyone is capable of determining those roles for themselves. Realistically, best is everyone figures out what their sexuality and identity is for themselves, how it relates to them, some people lack the maturity, introspection, confidence, and experience to determine it for themselves. For them there needs to be easy positive templates.

    1) Are Civ6 done with updates and new "content"?

The reason gay men are often deeply valued friends has nothing to do with them being gay, it's because YOU know that they are gay.
Think about what's important to you, what your emotions are and where they come from and stop caring about superficial opinions of others.
