  • Greydon Square is a West Coast performer who survived the gang culture in Compton, Calif., served in the military in Iraq and became an outspoken atheist as a college student. Square’s albums include “The Compton Effect,” “The CPT Theorem,” “The Kardashev Scale,” “Serpents of Eden,” “The Mushroom Cloud Effect,” “The Mandelbrot Set” and “Omniverse.” His latest album is “Compton Scattering.” Square’s lyrics deal with religion, politics and social justice.
    “So,” Square says, in explaining a new composition to “Freethought Matters” host Dan Barker, “‘Stockholm Syndrome’ obviously comes from this idea that you can fall in love with your captor or your oppressor - this idea that you have the ability to ignore some of the oppressive and totalitarian methods of the ideology that you profess love to. To me, it goes back to the fundamental nature of what God is, what the nature of God is.”
    This is the fall season’s 13th episode of “Freethought Matters,” airing in 12 cities on Sunday, Nov. 29.

    Finally; I've been waiting over 10 years for FFRF to invite Greydon Square as a guest. I sent you about 15 of his songs along with other freethought songs of various genres on 3 0r 4 cds back then and touted his brilliant lyrics and knowledge regarding science, religion and social justice, as well as his interesting background. But, better late than never. Thank you so much for this show! Much appreciated! Michael Kaye - FFRF member

    Hey! Greydon Square! For years now I've had CZcams Playlists of his saved on my browser. He's got some of the most hard-hitting, intellectually stimulating lyrics I've heard. There are many more great artists within his genre of music out there too. It was a pleasant surprise when I first came across them.

    Two of the atheists that inspired me the most! One who's not afraid to go toe-to-toe with Oprah and the other dropping bars that inspired a new generation of black atheists. I'm grateful this thanksgiving for this dialogue!

    @zuvarian Před 3 lety +3

    Wow, what a cool, intelligent, articulate, talented, evolved, humble, original thinker dude is Greydon ! "The dialogue I was getting wasn't intellectually stimulating enough." Yep, I can relate to that. Trying to find intellectually stimulating discussion in my former Evangelical culture was like trying to find algebra solutions among chickens roosting. All discussions with the Evangelical leaders always led to the same "just believe." The chickens could offer that much, or maybe offering nothing was more intelligent on their part.

    Thank you Graydon and Dan for a wonderful and engaging program. Loved the music samples and will definitely find and purchase, but enjoyed Graydon’s insights even more; brilliant and resilient, more inspirational than anything in any “holy book”.

    Thank you for having Graydon Square on your show. I don't know if it was in response to my request, or if you planned to interview him, all along (if the latter, great minds think alike, eh? 😉), but, either way, I really enjoyed it. Great guest + great host = great interview. The only thing that's missing is Annie Laurie.

    Good stuff. Keep doing what you're doing. A thought on the question of creativity/inspiration (16:15) I personally wouldn't assign agency or woo-woo by claiming the presence of an unknown 'higher order energy'. Very easy to take your audience down a weird path. What we do know about inspiration and creativity is that the more our brains are exposed to facts and knowledge (first-hand or second-hand), the more we engage with these ideas at an abstract level, the more interactions happen between concepts and ideas. And when two or three familiar ideas connect in an unfamiliar, unique way - we call it inspiration! Beyond that, most creativity is basically the hard slog of pattern formation, logic, psychology, determination, organization and planning.
