- The Saluki is one of the oldest breeds. Depicted in Egyptian and Assyrian art it has not changed over millennia. Here we see Ember showing us the paradigm of the perfect saluki doing what salukis do best, i.e. she's expressing her joy in running.

i've owned two salukis and they absolutely LOVE to be free and run wild, especially on beaches.
How do you train them to not run off if they see prey?

@@kaidaureten9660 I think this is their natural instinct. I try to keep them on a leash. If they see something on the leash I tell them No very very firmly. Try this while walking past other dogs and people. Eventually they learn to ignore however my dogs still run after swans haha

We had a Saluki lurcher who loved the beach. His idea of fun was to irritate another dog like a German Shepherd or a Rottweiler and make them chase him. He would then start running in circles keeping just ahead of them until they collapsed in exhaustion. He then trotted off with a smug look on his face.

Both are beautiful breeds Sandra, but I would say that the Saluki is a more sensitive and highly strung
I've enjoyed both breeds and rescued two very badly damaged salukis from Arabia, adorable, loyal but need correct handling and a joy to own but can be manipulative in the sweetest way. Pure poetry in motion when they run.
They tend to need more exercise than a greyhound and are a little more demanding and mischievous. They also have a stronger hunting instinct which can cause problems at times but saying all that I wouldn't be without one.
I'll add a simple thing to what the others said: the difference is that while Greyhounds LIKE to run, Saluki's NEED to run. It's that simple.

We had aGSD and pitty and the saluki would bug the shit out of them to get them to chase him, he would slow down enough to let them think they could catch him . And just when they thought they could he put that ever so little burst of speed on much like the road runner and leave them gob smacked they would just stand there and look at me , as if to say what the hell dad
