Another level to this sketch I didn't realize until now: on world maps using the Mercator projection, Russia and other northern countries look much bigger than they actually are, while many countries in the southern hemisphere - including Argentina and Angola - are appear much smaller.
When it got really stable (3rd season ish ) it was on at midnight most times, Central time in the 80's. ( Fridays sometimes made me change channels, Fridays was better the Saturday Day night live for me as a kid. (
This is a hilarious bit. Unfortunately, some pinheads below take it as a serious and in-depth analysis of the USSR. These luminaries are pretty much Western versions of Dave Thomas's character here. SCTV forever!
He was pointing at Central Asia when talking about Ukraine 😂 Still quite funny. Should've out the US or Western Europe in it to suggest USSR can take US or Western Europe in too.
I remember this episode. They did this whole thing where programming from "Three-See-Pee One" kept breaking in on SCTV's programming. It was absolutely hilarious, especially given the level of Cold War tension at the time. The amazing thing is how much of it I recall given that it was three and a half decades ago and I was baked like a pie (mmmmm, pie!) at the time.
Hey. Did you read about the Alaska legislature floating an idea to split the state in half so it's easier to administer? That would make Texas the *third* largest state in the Union.
@tivertsi "Russia does not interfere in other countries" -- someone should ask the Poles, the Czechs, the Ukrainians, the Estonians, the Chechens, etc. about whether or not that's true.
Aside from the genius of this sketch, can anyone here possibly enlighten me on what the music is in this sketch? Especially at the end with the trumpets and saxes? Very unusual
Russians, americans, Hetalia fans, non-Hetalia fans...please, don't fight! When it comes to the things that truly matter, we're all exactly the same. We all fit into Russia.
@otaku876 when the Soviet Union was still....there....XD That's why he says the Ukraine is a part of Russia. I would have to say this was made in the late 1980s or 1990-1992-ish. (:
@MrSersur the 'acting like they so clever' - this is probably the notable detail of British behaviour, but not Russian. Russians are people who keeps on thoughts, deeds and feelings, not the behaviors. Im just not 'acting im so clever' - im just stating the facts.
The USSR covered nearly 1/6th of the Earth's Land Area Surface. The size of the USSR was so big that even the combined land area of the United States and Canada could fit into it and there was still 1000 square miles of space still left over. But after the split of the USSR the combined land area of the United States and Canada became larger than the land area of Russia. That is huge when you think that it would still take the combined land area of Canada and the United States to be larger than the land area of Russia.
Are there any fluent Russian speakers that can say if the sign at the beginning is translated correctly? I know a bit of Russian, but not too much, and I don't think the verb принадлежить is correct, or до россии. It seems like it should be в россии, if that's the correct case for that preposition.
@serresjio .im not American! and Ukrainians prefer independance from Moscow authority. it cant be like before. Latvia, Ukraine, Estonia, Lithuania, are all free states now! they will resist the chains of imperialism!
I thought this was going to be a big setup and at the end someone was going to come in with Canada. Then it would cover most of Russia leaving him confused and angry. Great skit though.
SCTV was a great show and as a kid, it was even greater getting to stay up late on weekends to watch. Awesome show with awesome characters. They made so much fun of Russia and Russia's primitive backwards way of life. Russia was so pathetic as a country back then due to communism robbing the people of life itself and keeping them in the stone ages. I felt sorry for the people of Russia but not the communist. I am surprised that the Soviets did not fire missiles at Canada for all those jokes that made the Soviets look really, really, really stupid.
Actually Canada SCTV didn't do an insult, the Insult was towards the States corparation, you underestimate the Canadians (ONCE AGAIN) we show the true power!
@@playbookshowme484 Amazing how easily communists can expose themselves and show their ignorance with an uneducated comment. @@playbookshowme484 Easy to see from your comments that English is not your normal language. ???If you have all the replays??? A little English lesson. Do not worry if you are Russian or a communist, it is only television and just a joke. Canadians love making fun of the Soviets. These programs were made during the cold war, and we needed to laugh at the soviets and not have war. Laughing at the enemy is much better than fighting. Have a good day.
Well, this has actually aged rather well in 2022...
Yes, except that CBC, CTV and Global are now the CCCP propaganda machines.

Wow, I forgot all about SCTV. That was back when television didn't suck so badly.
Early 1980s television did kind of suck (mostly because it was leftover schlock from the 70s), but you had gems like this that made it more tolerable.
