      I've watched 7 episodes of that garbage ass anime because people keep hyping it up and I don't understand what these guys are talking about. there isn't anything I find redeeming about it. The story is extremely predictable, the only thing you can't predict is what will save the MC's life. The science isn't anything impressive either so it's not like you are learning anything cool it's just badly written characters walking around a badly written story

      While it's not unreasonable for someone to make an argument that a show is good and explain why the show is good (something that you obviously didn't bother doing, thus making your comment worse than useless), it's also not unreasonable for someone to be turned off from watching a show within one episode, half an episode, or even just the OP. Why? Because, that was the series putting its best foot forward and failing to impress.

      nah he was right about fire force though --i enjoyed the first two episodes but then the third episode was a total train wreck. my friends who keep up with the show told me it doesn't get much better so for being a generic exposition-heavy lightning fast pacing shounen, it's pretty skippable

    • @Minihood31770
      @Minihood31770 Před 5 lety +13

      Same, the way they skipped past in one episode what could have been a multiple episode tournament arc was way too quick pacing for me.
      The thing that killed it for me was the way they treated the nun character. She's worshipping in some courtyard in some sort of silk robe that shows off half her chest, then when protag walks past (as anyone could do, it's an open courtyard) she gets embarrassed, pulls the robe to cover herself and wraps a coat around herself before leaving. If this is just how worship is done, why is she embarrassed? If it's an embarrassing thing, why do it in a courtyard where anyone can just walk past? Then really not long after this there's tonal whiplash as we go from framing her as something to be ogled at (which the character seems uncomfortable about, already kinda icky) to her suddenly being a complex character with a traumatic childhood, but then they go right back to her being sexualised against her will when most of her clothes get burned off.

      I don't think anybody who disliked ep 1 of Dr.Stone is going to like the rest of the show so far. If you want to start pointing out flaws and annoyances in it, there are plenty. Particularly senku fake chuckling, making a pose, and smuggly putting the people around him down. That shit gets grating fast.
      Particularly because i used to be like that, and i hate to be reminded of it.

    • @Ragnell141
      @Ragnell141 Před 5 lety +3

      @@haldir108 The issue here isn't whether you liked or disliked it. Anyone can like or dislike anything. The problem is giving it a score and telling an audience "Skip it" based on subjective impressions. And one episode is not enough to make objective judgements about the whole show.
      You yourself only pointed out character quirks from Senku. You see them as flaws. I see them as what makes his character interesting to follow. But I wouldn't use my preferences as a basis for scoring the show.
      In short, I don't mind EXP sempai disliking the show or telling others he disliked it. I do however think he shouldn't then tell others to skip it based on one episode.
      And don't worry, we've all been there. We have had our cringy, insufferable phases.

    • @haldir108
      @haldir108 Před 5 lety +4

      @@Ragnell141 There is nothing that can be objectively good. FMA brotherhood? Subjectively good to the overwhelmingly majority of people, but even though I, and anybody i encounter think it's good, it is not objectively good. Art isn't measurable, so invoking objectivity is utterly pointless. The closest you can get to """objective""" truth is a consensus. Consensus of course being a large gathering of subjective opinions that are more or less in line with one another.
      The purpose of this video is merely to share EXP's subjective opinions. If you know and understand EXP's taste, then the video is probably useful to you, even if your taste is 100% opposite his, since you can compensate for that when making judgement yourself. EXP doesn't need to specify "I recommend you watch it/test it/skip it, since that is always implied.
      For example, you say you enjoy senku's character, while i find some of his mannerisms annoying. I don't think either of those opinions are more right than the other. Therefore, if we need to make a value judgement of the series, we can only say "my subjective judgement is X", as it is impossible to say which opinion is right.
      As for judging a show quickly, based on only one episode, or even less; i think that's perfectly reasonable. A show will show it's hand at how good it is at writing characters, handling exposition, making good use of art and directing, and establish it's tone within the first episode, or sometimes, even within the first 10 seconds. If you can't tell if a show will be a 3/10, a 6/10, or a 9/10 for you within 5 minutes, then you're not really paying attention.
      As for giving recommendations based on a single episode, i don't think there is anything dishonest about saying "i saw 1 episode, and did't like it, and i can't recommend it".

That being said it looka fucking amazing, and just that should be enough to make you want to watch it.

      The pacing was pretty amateur but even I thought it was good the first 2 episodes. Then I got impatient and read ahead and now I won't touch it with a ten foot stick.
      For the artist that made Soul Eater, Fire Force is ridiculously poorly executed, has terrible pacing and has a character whose entire shtick is being so "unlucky" that she sexually assaults people while getting angry at them for touching her when she forces her butt down their throat.

      Honestly fire force can be good if you never watched a shonen before i guess. Even though the universe is damn stupid it can be watched for the fight scenes at least. Example of terrible universe rules : we know 8th division is some kind of police of polices, so someone in government must want to investigate other divisions. But then you just go on pvp fight between divisions of firemen, with the general of one division being a crazy sadistic, the 8th just come on her division and attack them without any proof that their comrade ( who came of her own will ) would be there ... that kind of stupid universe really turns me off

    For anyone complaining about his format, keep this in mind:
    Before scirpting, editing or anything like that, he has to watch 26 episodes. That's a full 2 seasons of an anime. Complaining that he didn't give stuff like Dr. Stone more than one episode to impress him is ridiculous, because he'd have to watch 52 or 78 episodes to properly judge things, which for one video is utterly ridiculous. Also keep in mind that for each show he has to script, record and edit, each of which could take hours per show, and he has to drop the video before the end of the season. He has 90 days to do this, and because of the long nature of these videos, he often has other stuff come up while watching.
    The point is that he only watches one episode because he only has time for one episode.

    El-Melloi II Case Files is a Sequel to Fate:Zero, as it stars one of the main characters from that fate iteration; much of Waver's(the main guy) motivation comes directly from the events of Fate/Zero. Its also a prequel to Fate Stay Night, although thats less important. The series is more of a magical detective type story for much of whats shown so far.
    In terms of your other recommendations, I agree with a lot of them, but as others have said, Doctor Stone is very much a watch this season. The main character comes off as an edgy asshole for a bit, but like most good characters, he has depth which makes his attitude a lot more understandable and likeable as the show goes on.
    Im on the fence about fire force myself, having caught up to it recently. When its good, its good. When its bad, its really, really bad. I audibly groaned when an accidental grope scene happened, and even the characters themselves are aware that this particular character is prone to such things happening frequently. Its definitely one of those shows that you watch for the underlining mystery rather than the characters(although I do like most of the main characters).
    Okaa-san online is super fun in a sort of trashy way. Like it definitely seems aware of the tropes of the isekai genre, and goes out of its way to subvert them, or use them creatively. Such as the game literally being a power fantasy made for Moms instead of teenage boys. Or how they were in such a rush to get the game out of an alpha state that most of the npc's dont even have detailed models. But then theres trashy fanservice scenes with the mom, which was expected. Its a good drunk watch I guess.

There is some Fun use of science but Suspension of disbelief tends to be clouded when you introduce a guy that punches a lion to death. And for a series that tries to Stay rooted in science and logic thats Not a good thing. I feel like it gets overhyped because its shonen jump... you know the maker of some of Animes greatests. The plot is unique, but it just gets kinds dragged down by its small cast of which Two are interesting and two are just your average boy cant spit it out to girl that clearly likes him which is just SOOOO overused. Also (I forgot his Name so i Call him Jojo) Jojo didnt had much Time to actually develop as a villain so his turn and sudden personal attachment to senku felt rather shallow. But it's not that yet.

    Dr. Stone gets rly gud with time! You need to sit in with a bid of expectation of edge and things not making sense, but if you go with it it gets really fun! Personally can recommend

    Dr stone is great, may not ever end up wowing you but it's unique enough to get to at least episode 6-7 which is when the real fun starts. It's a long form shounen show so you can expect arcs with growth and consequences that expand and expound over time. Writing is really Goofy and not self serious at all. But please don't skip it.

    So... Dr. Stone I would say is worth a test. I can definitely say that its something that you have to have a certain itch for, learning how something works and watching the progress to get there. It's good if you want that itch scratched, but not for much else. The character writing is not the best.
    Fire Force is a shonen. And that's about it. I like it, cause the animation is lovely and the OP is fire (GET IT!!!). But other than that, it has all of the shonen strengths as well as the faults and it's good for something you turn your brain off to. It's no bad, but you can skip it and wont be missing out on the next naruto or anything

    Personally, I found Dr. Stone enjoyable. The main thrust of the plot is pretty obvious, but it executes it in an interesting way, and I find the interactions between the characters rather unique and refreshing. Give it the proper three episodes and see if you still hate it.

  • @groxx
    @groxx Před 3 lety +1

    Since everyone is piling on with Dr Stone, I'll do the opposite:
    It's a standard isekai with even less plot than normal, and uniquely has tons of super summarized real science (that part can go either way tbh - it's to its credit imo, but it's rammed through super fast so it's kinda awkward all the time).
    It's a show that makes you want to feel like you've gotten smarter by watching it (an achievement, to be sure!), but you clearly didn't, and then you realize that all that science-ish time could have instead been spent on character development or any kind of plot that lasts more than one episode.
    And then the next episode is the same thing again.
    As is the next.
    And the manga implies this will continue for the foreseeable future.
    Skip.

  • @lizardperson9648
    @lizardperson9648 Před 5 lety +2

    I am actually really weird, because I dropped Dr. Stone midway the third episode and also dropped Fire Force. First is too unrealistic for a series whose main appeal is science and stuff and a generic shonen besides. Usually I can forgive unrealism in universe if it is made up by the realism of characters. Dr. Stone got neither so really upsetting. And the second is so generic shonen I slept through the first episode. Except the flame scenes. And opening.
    What I can't forgive you is skipping Dumbbell, which stole my heart after it introduced Russian character, Russian jokes and all in an episode about chin-ups. I was watching thinking to myself, gym's good nd all, but you can't beat _turnichki_ and op, next episode, they introduce them WITH a Russian character. Priceless. I laughed out loud.
    My personal bias aside, I feel like your personal bias against physical exercise stole from you an amazing educament show, and motivating besides.

    Of the ones I'm watching that you listed, since I'm caught up on the ones I'm watching
    Astra - Watch. It's a slow burn that builds off the interpersonal relationships that get built up throughout the show. The most recent episode included a HUGE twist reveal (that you'll see coming if you put some thought in it) that may or may not explain why the plot is what it is.
    Dr. Stone - Totes worth it. The guy writing the Manga makes a point of /knowing his shit/ which is why Senku tends to go on for too long, sometimes. That said, very early in the manga's life, they found out that Senku, Taiju, and Yuzuriha weren't going to be able to carry the series as the protags, so they shifted gears and introduced a whole village that had not been stoned (which does get explained later; said explanation bothers me as it doesn't seem to work, but whatever I've moved past it sense the series also has a guy who one-punched a lion). ANYWAYS, long story short, as soon as Senku gets to the village and the far better characters there, the show improves vastly, because it starts actually giving him goals that have to do with more than just basic survival and people to play off of who are actually interesting.
    Fire Force - I am Shounen trash, so of course I'm watching and enjoying the riding here. It's not going to go for anything super deep from a storytelling perspective, but the powers will be fun, as evidenced by the guy who literally carries a tuba around to convert fire into ice. Not even kidding. Beyond that, it's one of the two most gorgeous Shounen shows on right now (Demon Slayer is the other, and it's UFOTable so of course it's pretty), and the characters are mostly fun, regardless of how trope-y they may be.
    Demon lord dad - Yeah.... apparently by the end of the Light Novels, it's him getting with the "daughter" so.... eeeee.....
    Rail Zeppelin - Sooooo good. Partly because I have a boner for anything that lets me get to see more of Waver Velvet. Add that to them having A - explained the Rail Zeppelin, B - Yeah, they had that OVA back in January, and C - gone FULL Murder on the Orient Express as of two weeks ago.
    Abandoned Sacred Beasts - Look, it's doing Fairy Gone but better, and however dumb it gets, I'm happy to keep watching it, since I like the characters, mainly Schaal.
    Vinland Saga - I saw one or two episodes of this, but MAN I'm all down for it. I'll need to binge it as soon as I'm able to have the time to do it.

    1. He’s not edge, he’s a very relaxed character seems to have the mindset of a near retiree.
    2. It satirise/celebrate isekai, jrpg and game in general. It can be quite fun watching him rant about nonsense tropes.
    3. The production is intentionally trash. None of the key frames connect, the plot doesn’t even connect. It’s like watching a train wreck, but somehow the train is doing Initial D drifts.
