The original configuration was unique....and damn near perfect. I watched quite a few races from the turn 4 infield, (now turn 2), and it was a spectators track. Short straights, long turns...nothing else like it.
But the race last week was really good
The car’s and the wheels are trouble you ain’t gonna see much or that’s right you didn’t see much it was a horrible race the wheels kept flying off the cars garbage Jr.Johnson’s turn over in his grave
@@1406Alexx The race sucked! New asphalt for cars that are prone to spinning out. Just what they need. More accidents than ever and we end up with long lines of cars that can't pass. They need to find out why this car spins out so easily. I think they also need to get away from the low profile tire. I believe the sidewall is not strong enough to keep the bead in the rim. It slips out and causes the flat tires.
I was fortunate to win the Richard Petty experience back in 2005. Let me tell you, going 130-160 mph in a IROC on that 23° track is MIND-BLOWING!! I want to do it again on this new 28° track! Best experience of my life.
round and round in and endless circle . . . .
I would love to do this some day on any track
Feel like it's gonna be called Atlanta superspeadway after the 3 races in a couple if weeks
Seeing that Old asphalt being torn apart brakes my heart so much history.
I wonder if they did something at least some of the old asphalt.
Me to. Me to. Also I wish it was California speed way they were doing it to. It need help to bumpy.
They had a promotion where if you bought both the spring and fall tickets during a time frame you could have gotten a piece of the old track the rest they grounded up and put it in the mix for the new track
@@andrewstewart8339 That's good to know thank you!
@@andrewstewart8339 Ah good. At least they did a good thing.
Cool to see the old Winston cup colors on the walls
I remember when it had the red stripes on the walls, when it used to be a complete oval.
Great work on the track and great work on this video showing us all the behind the scenes! Can't wait to watch the races this weekend!
I want a piece of that old track! They should sell sections of it... U know? Would be a great way to raise money for charity or something.
I just found this in my recommended, i haven't watched a single NASCAR race in my life but maybe i should start now that youtube is pushing.
This was well overdue! Can’t wait to see NASCAR racing this weekend!
To me, Atlanta has always been in my top 5, it's basically a little daytona, Tons a speed and close racing 🏎💯🏁
I was at the first Xfinity race on the new AMS 😁 lucky crew that got to work on it and it looks great in person and the weather was perfect on Saturday 👍👍
Looks absolutely bonkers. Tight corners at superspeedway speeds. Insane
Superspeedway speeds=Lower speeds. Been that way since the 80s
Atlanta isn't a Super Speedway
@@JediOfTheRepublic it is now
@@JediOfTheRepublic you been following racing for a whole year and a half I can tell already. It's a figure of speech bruh. Insane fast speeds on a 1.5 mile are essentially superspeedway conditions. Ask any driver.
@@JediOfTheRepublic AMS has loooooooong been a favorite of many top-notch Nascar drivers.
Love this track!
“Just a small nine inches…”I’m in trouble.
14:16 We need the “Atlanta Quaker State ROVAL 400 presented by Walmart” at Atlanta Motor Speedway!!!!!
After decades of dealing with weeper cancelations, it sure is nice to see owners have final learned that a dedicated drainage system is well worth it's relatively meager cost. The new track config seems awesome, but it also seems like [cup] lap times will actually slowdown & racing will be tamed bc of the 'speedway packages' on the cars. Regardless, on behalf of race car driver's backs [& to the chagrin of chiropractors] everywhere, thank you for the new & long overdue ribbon of asphalt.
This race is historic. Im so glad I will be there to witness history
why is it historic
I was there too 😁 the weather was perfect Saturday
What a epic first race
I’m so excited to watch these races.
Probably the coolest construction site in a long time. Epic.
Love the new track
Great video. Very interesting
That asphalt drainage system is sick, can’t wait to go there this weekend
10 days and counting!!
Its gonna be off the chain!!
This was so informative I feel like I could build my own track. Cool stuff
I felt the opposite! He said something about everyone enjoying the results of the work by watching the races, but I hate watching races. I'm only here for the construction and engineering. When I have gone to races, the pits are the bets part because I got to see what went into running the cars or boats. I was hoping to hear more about how each machine works and what they actually do to compact or roll the surface, how the crane was setup (the video didn't show much of that until later, so I was pausing to figure out how it was configured). They hardly scratched the surface. Is the top layer of asphalt also open to allow water to pass through or is it closed so rain runs off and only ground water comes up and drains? How thick was the road base and how did they compact it? Do the support arms between the machines have a hinge point to adjust for angle? As a construction pro and engineering person (no schooling or degree, but someone who builds solutions to problems) I was hoping for more. It was cool to see an overview of a track being rebuilt. I watch Cleetus McFarland and loved their videos on repairing a small track.
@@CGT80 definitely could’ve gone more in depth but it’s rare they show this much behind the scenes on a basically brand new cup series track. I’ll have to check out those Cletus vids for more info. Thanks!
Looking forward to the racing on the new surface and configuration!!!
“Just a small 9 inches”
9 inches isn’t small… it’s actually well above average 😢
Well above average. But then again its not about size but how you use it....
Yeah😔
Really cool!!
Can't wait I will be there on March 20th
8:42 They're filming! Look like you're doing something!
Excited to be back and see how the cars handle.
Me too
Next week we get to see Sunday march 20
Awesome job
should be an exciting race🏁 Go, Truex
Should be a cool show on Sunday!
Big or small engineering is amazing
Damn...it looks like it's going TO BE FASSST!
Hell yeah brother!
Excellent, thank you ! 🏎🏎🏎🏎🏎 👍👍👍👍👍
This could set the standard for the way that asphalt is made for some tracks. Simply ingenious how it absorbes water like a sponge then drains it away. Of course it might be a different scenario for up north over time with bad winter months... something Atlanta doesn't get in the winter. Freezing rain could play havoc on it in northern states.
Well you have actually proven yourself brother 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 drives will love it👏🏻👏🏻
I will be there this Sunday.
Cool video
Reminds of cleetus when he remodeled his track even some of the steps look the same lol. Freedom Factory baby!
i cant wait for the west coast swing to be over
I can’t wait next weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway this is gonna be a great race can’t wait to see the new Atlanta Motor Speedway
Same here man, super excited
The new track looks good but I liked the previous configuration a little better.
Bro when the new gen cars start up. Two things are gonna happen. 1. I’m going to nut 2. When the race starts I’m expecting a jam packed race
I remember when it was just an oval and the labonte brothers did their victory lap terry as the champion and Bobby as the race winner
Sheesh feels like I was just there yesterday 😶
Nice can’t wait to see that water freeze and crack all that work already been comped in Italy
I have been watching NASCAR since they had very few races on tv. In my opinion, the track should be the same width all the way around. I watched the race and saw cars bounce on the back stretch. I thought the track would have been much smoother.
Nice mount
Cleetus McFarland approves this hell yeah brother
Not gonna lie, Atlanta looks good with a dirt surface.
4:39
the snowplow guy coming through my town
This might sound stupid and I understand the new asphalt is expected to last a long time. Is there the possibility in the turns with all the force from the pack pressing down on the asphalt that the racing surface could be pressed down and blocking the rain water from getting to the draining system over time?
if stuff was done right the ground is compacted already
11:20 whats that on the dude's left arm, some sort of exo assist?
This track had huge potential.... If it wasn't run with the superspeedway package...
Austin Cindric was saying on Jr.'s podcast that they're running superspeedway motors on intermediate chassis.
messed it up, why remove a lane?
I see cleetus doing this to his track soon😁
huh, neat that iracing was involved. Best online sim out there
riding on a new surface has to be nice
Appears to be very driver friendly being so wide.
Just watched the first ever race on the new surface…is it too late to change it back?
Sadly. It was abysmal, atrocious, and terrible.
We should've done this to Texas
Wouldn’t mind it if nascar was using the 670hp package at this new ATL. But 510hp pack racing at a 1.5 just seems kinda meh . Hope I’m wrong tho
You weren’t wrong.
Eventually that track asphalt will be plugged full of rubber from the worn tires. Then will hold water. Come winter will freeze and start to crumble the track apart.
Congratulations 🥳
I wish Texas would do this but make the track 1.60 miles with a baking of 30 degree on the turns
I hope one of the drivers gave harper a ride around the track once it was done.
Nice!!!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸😀😀😀🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I would think being that course the tires will rip up some asphalt or and least gravel within the asphalt. I see it not lasting.

💯 that’s what I came here for too. They hardly covered anything really and we all know the host or whatever of this video is just a talking head who doesn’t know anything about all that 🥱
Dang that’s some banking for that track
Not a fan of Nascar but I am a fan of using the i-racing and stuff like it for real world applications such as this.
So when's the PJ1 going down?😈
This is what NASCAR needs to do at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. They need to bank the corners like Daytona and Talladega. We need our infield for camping and a long weekend of racing. Please NASCAR, do not take that away from us. Thank you
I know Cleetus is watching this video 🤘
Are the cars going to have to run a plate like Daytona and Talladega or just let them go
Tapered spacer
I wish they would’ve gone back to the pre 1997 configuration. 😢
Willing to give it a chance
Funny how some so called fans are quick to judge something before seeing it in action
If all the hard work pays off I guess plenty of sour face losers will eat their words 👍
Should have a dirt race there.
I love it cause the only one to ever win on this new surface is my favorite Driver#WilliamByron
“Welcome to Atlanta superspeedway”
With the additional banking wrecks are going to ruin tons of cars as they slide down that banking after hitting the wall...like a high speed Rockingham.. should be interesting...
and that ridge from the asphalt lanes coming out of the bank, you can already see the ass ends of some of those testers getting loose and bouncing. Wait until they are drafting doing the same and no downforce to keep it planted. Gonna be sketchy ride through there.
I'm sad that this happened for a few reasons.. Nearly every driver that retires says they won't miss superspeedways. Current drivers hated the 550hp package. Fans and drivers constantly ask for more short tracks. So this decision just entirely confuses me. Even more so now that the next gen car appears to be great on cookie cutters. Hoping for the best, but this is not the ideal track design.
Fans love superspeedways to and they love 1.5 mile tracks now due to the great races at those tracks this season, people have been asking for Kentucky back and so many 1.5 mile tracks lol.
The reason fans wanted more short track was because of How trash the 550 Hp package was
@@ninjawarrriorr3062 The fans' push for more short tracks started when nascar still ran the gen 4 car. It had nothing to do with the 550 package.
If by “less down time” you mean record number of cautions, then yes. Good work, asses.
One groove on the bottom like most repaves. I guarantee it
I wish there was no pack racing. I wish it was with the 670 horsepower with the 4 inch spoiler. Sigh. I'm willing to give it a chance. I hope it's a good race on March 20th. Regardless I'm excited to see a new car on a new track
I hope it's good too, but definitely not my type of track. Just hoping it isn't another TMS-type of failure.
It would be nice if they went back to 750 hp
@@Thomas-qh3vj Number is just a number, You can have a 600 hp car walk the ever living shit out of a 700hp car or even a 1000hp car, if the 600 is set up proper. At a certain point it becomes more of a challenge (and more rewarding time wise) keeping the power to the ground then making more of it.
@@Thomas-qh3vj you only say that just because 750 is a bigger number, even if the racing was trash
I would’ve loved to be apart of the milling and paving over there
Ok helps with water great but it will be a huge issue now because of fuel will go in drainage now from accidents
That is a ground water drainage system. How is fuel going to get under the surface? You are not understanding the design.
@@paulcopeland9035 guess it depends where it runs off to 🤷🏻♂️ they didn’t say any details on car fluids
@@rickcraver837 ...Car fluids will run down the track and into the infield as before. Ground water (which they have had trouble with for years) will travel in the special asphalt layer to the infield under the racing surface and into the drainage trenches shown in the video.
@@paulcopeland9035 Any car fluids that would be spilled in the same area as the water will indeed run into the same place as the water drainage. There's no magical chemical sorter built into the gravel that distinguishes between fluids. Now with that said id imagine with the EPA fucks being how they are... nascar has designed some filtration system into this "fancy" drainage system to at least reduce the amount of contamination.
@@crisnmaryfam7344 ...Review the video. They are channeling (piping) the ground water in trenches to a collection site. Car fluids won't get near that collection system. This type of system is as old as time. The cool part of this system is the special asphalt based underlayment that allows the ground water to freely move through it.
Still wish the first section of pit road could get repaved, even though it’s concrete and not asphalt. It’s just OCD triggering that’s all.
My neck is hurting thinking about that tractor driver
Look insanely fast let's go Brandon
That group should reach out to Cleetus McFarland and the Freedom Factory.
yep the original config was best
im excited but well see
I would have sold the old asphalt to fans or putting it in a gift shop there for fans
Wow there really tryna sell this new track hard it’s not gonna pay five years I’m calling it now
720p?
Indycar should race there
Had to dial the paver in.
did he call 9 inches small???
