    Same here. I just used that exact lens to shoot a feature film, along with the 28mm telesor f/2.8, also Minolta, both my father's lenses. I found them in his camera bag after he died in 1988. I used them on a Panasonic S5 for the film though. But I'm also using them on my gh5. I have the 35mm rokkor as well. All amazing lenses, right up there with helios. At least in my opinion. :-) great video is always, even though I'm 4 years late. Lol

    Fellow GH5 Dude!! This is a nice image. The out of focus area has a nice look to it. Older lenses are less contrasty which makes them better for storytelling.

    Vintage lenses can be fun and have a look all of their own. I've a few M42 screw mount lenses and got some adapters for those just to play around, mostly on photos.
    Looked like those adapters are a glass free adapters so you have the 2x crop factor. You can get focal reducers (from the likes of K&G Concepts or Viltrox) with a 0.71 factor making the total crop factor 1.44 and increasing the speed by one stop. This means that a 50mm f2.8 on a focal reducer would be more like a 35mm f2.
    You can also get cheap tilt adapters to work with vintage lenses (the M42 screw tilt shift/adapter I have doesn't fit on the GH5, but the tilt only adapter does) that allow you to play around with the focal plane and shift the focus around the shot.
    Another option is the Helicon focusing adapter - turning the vintage lenses into macro lenses.

    • @CalebHoover
      @CalebHoover  Před 3 lety +1

      i'd love to play around with a tilt shift!

    • @geekinthegarden3927
      @geekinthegarden3927 Před 3 lety

      @@CalebHoover the tilt/shift m42 to mft adapter i have is the Kipon Tilt & Shift Adapter www.amazon.co.uk/Kipon-Tilt-Shift-Adapter-Micro/dp/B072L4327X but because of the shifting function it doesn't fit on the GH5 (fits the gx80/85 though). I don't use the shift ability much but its handy if you want to shoot into a mirror, take shots of tall buildings or do a 3 shot panoramic photo where the shots match up better than panning.
      The tilt only lens is cylindrical so fits the GH5 (no shift ability). its like this one www.amazon.co.uk/B-I-G-Lens-Adapter-Tilt-M42/dp/B076VLKZKT
      Great for doing the toy effect but also useful for controlling what is in focus (e.g. just the faces of the subject with their bodies falling out of focus).
      Both of these are to use old fashioned m42 screw mount full frame lenses on the micro 4/3 format making use if that extra image circle ( one great advantage of the 2x crop as you would need a large format lens to do it with a larger sensor - and they aren't as cheap or as easy to come by as m42)

    All I shoot with are vintage lenses. I absolutely LOVE the cinematic look they give!
    Sure they tend to be harder to shoot with than more modern glass, but for me the difficulty-to-cinematic-quality ratio is more than acceptable LOLZ
    I mainly shoot with the Kiev-16u trio (Tair 41 50mm, Vega 7 20mm, and the MIR-11M 12mm), but I shoot with the Rokinon equivalent to this lens.
    Footage is suuuuper cinematic and just right in terms of softness.

    I happened upon an ad (a few months ago) for a OM to M4/3 converter for like £10 and I had a 50mm OM lens sitting on my old OM1n so, for that money, I thought ‘Why not’?
    I wasn’t sure how the angle of view would turn out but it’s exactly the same as a M4/3 50mm (compared with my 35-100 set to 50mm). So I now have a (virtually) free - Wide Aperture- 50mm Prime lens which is tiny and produces beautiful video (and Arty photos too I guess). So then I sourced a vintage OM 24mm f2.8 lens (just like the one I used to own and gave away 🤦‍♂️) which cost me £120 but that’s still the Cheapest lens I have bought for my GH5/G9!

    Love the colors at 4:07 and 4:15. One of the things I did during the pandemic was go nuts on vintage lenses. Anything but the most sought-after will typically be a hell of a good lens with its own characteristic look for a hundred bucks or less. You really need good speedboosters to use them on MFT for walking-around focal lengths, but you'll still pay far less than for a new native lens. It's cheap enough that you can try it and see if you catch the bug. : )

    • @raksh9
      @raksh9 Před 3 lety

      Metabones makes Speedboosters for a variety of legacy lenses, like Canon FD, Contax/Yashica and Minolta MD. The latter will fit the vintage lens Caleb uses here. However, it won't work with these lenses due to the aperture pin getting in the way:
      Minolta MD 24mm F 2.8
      Minolta MC 28 mm F 2.5
      Minolta MD 35mm F 2.8
      Minolta MD 85mm F 1.7
      Minolta MD 135 mm F 2.8
      Minolta MD 135 mm F 3.5
      Minolta MC 200mm F 4
      Minolta MD 35-70mm F 4
      This is a definite negative as it removes many of the most useful focal lengths and commonly available lenses.
