I agree with going out and getting to know people with different beliefs, but it is important to not fall into the trap of being tolerant of intolerance. By which I mean racism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of bigotry are not "differing opinions," they are dangerous. I think people sometimes think that being open-minded means you have to listen to everyone as if every view is equally valid, but this is not the case. You still need to think critically about what everyone is saying and decide whether or not what they are saying is worth taking into consideration.
