Take her review with a massive grain of salt...Her major beef is because it doesn't have everyone's favorite(not) woke buzzword......"diversity".🤮 So pathetic....There's nothing wrong with what they chose to put in THEIR curriculum. You can always go and despise yourself and your own culture in a more "diverse" nation.
This is a great review, thank you!
I have had to be gluten-free for the last year and I've struggled a lot changing over to gluten free
I like your book recs . so much , Michelle. I look forward to it . Thanks so much for another good video . I like Know and Tell , though I know what you mean by AO and the author and its attendant things ( I agree 💯 about that , but I do admire how they made the CM books available and the PNEU magazines accessible online to all for free ) I liked the book . I haven't read the whole book , only those that applies to my kids age .UE . I think her book is more of her experience based and not research based . I am interested in the Classic book and the ADHD one ( I did not like their channel much but the book looks great and the song was good ) . But first , let me try the Workbooks ADHD and Exec function ones . I saw the one about academic pressure , setting expectation etc in Arlene's video too . But that Classic book looks seriously good .
I would stay away from shake for celiac. GL doesn’t not mean much if ingredients don’t match it.
Two nonfiction books I've been reading and enjoying lately are- Reading Reconsidered: A Practical Guide to Rigorous Literacy Instruction by Doug Lemov Deeper Reading: Comprehending Challenging Texts, grades 4-12 by Kelly Gallagher. I'd recommend them if you haven't already read them.
Those look very interesting .
I understand what you are saying about know and tell. I recently read some of it but it was ok but not good enough for me to read the entire book. I’m intrigued by the classics one you mentioned. Have you ever looked into write by number? I’m looking at that as an option in the future for us.
That computer unit sounds great. I definitely to add something like that.
I agree that preschool is a great time to focus on history and science. Nature and environmental studies fit naturally with their level of curiosity. Reading history based picture books set a great foundation to learning to read, and there are so many hands-on learning opportunities in both subjects. I found that once I started teaching more formal mathematics and learning to read, history and science took a bit of a back seat. We still did them, but they were not the main subjects. Now my daughter is a reader and has a strong number sense, history, and science are back in the spotlight.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
I loved the circus protest art! Way to make it her own. Have your kids ever balked at having to do school lessons in the summer when other kids are "off"? Do you ever feel like you need a longer break than the one week Sabbath every 6 weeks? Those are the two main reasons I've hesitated going year round. Thanks for another great video! Enjoy the rest of your summer.
I was wondering with Core Knowledge computer science where you would suggest starting. My daughter is 10 but we have never done any computer science curriculum. She of course knows the basics of using a computer. Should we start with an earlier level than 5th grade?
3rd grade starts beginner coding. Scratch Jr. Is introduced. 4th grade is problem solving with technology. I would look over the units and see what fits the best. It’s also possible to just pull info from the units your daughter hasn’t covered yet. You don’t necessarily have to do a full unit to move on to the next level
Thank you for existing. That’s all I’ll say. People like you are very important. Simply being who you are. Never forget this.
Thank you ❤️
What is the app you mentioned called?

@@michellegf thank you!
You thoroughly explained the practicality of it all and how to follow the progression of books. Does not seem as overwhelming now, thank you! Planning to use this level with a Dyslexia Dysgraphic this year for grade 7’ish. He had used EIW and the grammar was not explained in a colorful enough way. Just a topic, a couple worksheets, and off you go…except that’s not how he learns. As you said the “out of the box” way MCT explains grammar with stories and pictures will help this hopefully stick in his mind! The why’s behind it will be nice to slowly go through with a more read aloud-story form. And glad to hear it works well with her IEW too.
I’m glad you found the video helpful and I hope it works well for your child.
We are in our second year, I do feel overwhelmed all over again. Thank you so this video.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi. Could you share a link for core knowledge? Do they use a textbook? Also did you create your student planner sheet? I love it.
Core Knowledge has a student reader and a teacher guide. www.coreknowledge.org/download-free-curriculum/ I have a few videos on my channel that show how I use it if you have specific questions. I also found this website helpful. It takes you thru how to use CK. homeschoolworkplans.com The student schedule is from Canva. It’s a free template, I just added some graphics.
I have kept a bin for ID cards , belts and socks too . But what do you know , sometimes its still all over the place. And places for things . And does she have out of sight , out of mind problem ? I and my kids , all of us have ADHD .... And chaos is very dysregulating . But they are used to Mom needing some time to regulate , if it becomes too much . ❤ this . I think I will try those workbooks... ADHD and Executive Function ones . And have you read Edward Hallowells Driven to Distraction book and its part 2 ? Both are good .
Thanks for sharing! I will add the book recommendation to my tbr list.
I really loved hearing your faith journey! Unconditional love is very important to me and I appreciate many teachings of Jesus in the Bible. I spent ages 11-18 very involved with a Christian church but started exploring morality and figuring out that religion didn’t make sense in my own head. I feel that we all need to make sense of the world and spirituality in a way that makes sense for ourselves 🤍 so happy I found your channel
Thank you for sharing your personal experience and thoughts on this.
Another great video and great recs . 👍
Thank you!
I love how clearly you explain things. I would love to see more on Core Knowledge. I am planning to use Core Knowledge with my kiddos and I am intimidated. I love your channel and really appreciate you taking the time to share with us!
Thank you! I do have a few videos on my channel already about how I use CK in my homeschool. I also find homeschool work plans really helpful homeschoolworkplans.com If there’s anything particular you would like see please let me know 😃
Excellent video!
Thank you!
“Model the behavior you want.” I would LOVE to do this, but I also have the special ADHD brain and am now trying to figure this out after 40 years of being “lazy, messy, etc.” Have you come across anything in your research about ADHD parenting ADHD children??? Thank you SO MUCH for this video and these resources. It has given me a lot of good ideas!
I am glad you found the video helpful! I haven’t come across anything specifically addressing both an ADHD parent and child. I will update as I read thru my stack of books though.
We will be using components of Core Knowledge this year! (Not math, we using something else for math).
I hope it goes well!
I appreciate your honest review! I will say that one difference I have found is in the math. I have used the Simply Good and Beautiful Level 3 and 4 and there is plenty of review and practice built in. This may be different in younger levels and may be the new math format. I actually came to TGATB from Singapore. To be fair I wasn’t using Dimensions but the older US Edition. We had wild gaps that I couldn’t fill until we used TGATB at a lower level for remediation and it all finally clicked for my daughter. I absolutely loved Singapore at first and appreciated the mastery approach. After 4 years of using it I found that the concepts while sticking better initially were not sticking in the long term memory because of the lack of consistent review. We would spend a week zooming through the graphing unit and she would master it. Then we wouldn’t do graphs for a year. We would spend 2 months on regrouping while neglecting multiplication and division and vice versa. When we would come back to a concept I would have to completely reteach it. This may be different in Dimensions and I’m assuming it is based on your review. We just had a different experience in this area. It may even be that a lot of the math curriculum from different companies has been updated to add more review and spiraling into the mastery.
Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts on this.
I have my son's school work on my planner and I check it off as it gets finished, but I let him choose the order. I will stack up what we need to do that day and then he goes and rearranges it.
That’s a great idea, thanks for sharing!
I relate to the (seemingly) excessive defensiveness to giving "a lot" of work in homeschool 😂 I too am scarred from the endless barrage of educational neglect masked as ~relaxed unschooling~ and their weird anti academics brigade.
Can you sense the irritation in my videos 😆. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and it’s nice to know I am not the only one that feels this way.
Love the way you give clear explanations and I like the videos you put up . Thank you !! 💐
I’m glad your enjoying my content!
Perfect timing! I was going to ask you about scheduling. :)
I’d love to hear what you think of skipping IEW 2A, Im considering doing that next year as well. Also I’d love to hear more about Light Lit 6 when you get into it and what you think of the student workbook compared to like LL Grade 3/4? I have LL Level 6 or Storm on my radar for next year because of all the great writing prompts LL includes, but keep getting stuck looking at the student workbook, is it all grammar or is there more to it I’m missing? Like is it worth it if you are already doing MCT? Thanks for sharing!
I will definitely update as I go along. I do think the LL student books are worth it. They cover grammar concepts and mechanics we haven’t encountered in MCT yet. I also really like the poetry units. My daughter prefers LL poetry over MCT poetry. LL also builds upon itself each year, so it may refer to previous concepts (which I think is good for retention) but also goes deeper each level.
Looks great! Thanks for such a thorough video.
Thanks!
Oh man I don’t have a Kroger Or an Aldi, you got some Really Good buys!🥰
Someone gave me a 4 pound bag of El Maizel corn flour, it's gluten free. I was wondering if it can be used in a bread maker and how...so thank you!
I have no idea 🤔. I would assume you could use a bread machine, probably the sweet bread setting. It would of course come out like cornbread. I would check out a few recipes online and see if you have any luck.
As someone with Celiac disease, I would never drink that Orgain. Even if it's marked gluten free, it's pretty much guaranteed to affect me, simply due to the ingredients, no matter how they processed it.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it. That’s the conclusion I came to as well.
I am so grateful you’ve shared about the computer science units within CK. I will definitely be implementing them with my daughter this year. I feel so inspired after watching your curriculum picks this year, it has helped me tremendously with feeling more eager to get back to planning the year after a nice break! Will you be sharing some sort of video on how you plan to incorporate all of these moving parts on a daily/weekly basis? I think that would be immensely helpful to see. I often struggle to create and sustain a good schedule and before you know it, it’s been weeks since we’ve done any art or made progress on our social justice unit for example.
I agree! showing how I plan to implement everything is helpful. I have a homeschool schedule video coming out tomorrow 😃.
Great video. I was unaware that Mint & Bloom had an election study as well. I am going to check it out. Thanks!
My 7 year old is also a celiac kid and we buy almost everything you bought in this video!! We LOVE Purely Elizabeth granola (the flavors rotate all the time at Costco and while they are all good, the vanilla chocolate chip one is to die for….so if you see that one, grab it)! We also really the Starbucks egg bites and they have an awesome frozen salmon (Moreys brand I believe) that is so good in the air fryer! My kids devour it and it’s so healthy! Thanks for another awesome video!
Thanks for the suggestions! I will definitely keep an eye out for those the next time we go to Costco.
The chicken meatballs are gluten free?? Are they also dairy free? I always skip over them because I assumed they had gluten.
Yes gf and dairy free!
Thank you for pointing out that not everything is gluten free just because it says gluten free. It’s so frustrating when you see a package that says gluten free but then the ingredients say otherwise. I’ve run across this so much! As someone who has had celiac disease for many years I always double check labels. But, for someone who is newly diagnosed what you said valuable information. Also, I would agree with you that the shakes are a no go
It really is frustrating! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it.
I’m thinking of going for lightning literature for my upcoming 4th and 2nd grader. I also came across learning language through literature have you researched that one too? Thanks
I briefly looked into language through literature and eliminated it as an option because it is not secular. I prefer secular based curriculum in my homeschool. Nothing against the curriculum, just a personal preference.
Thank you for the great video. Do you have any tips on homeschooling a child with ADHD? My eldest was just diagnosed and it’s becoming a real struggle now that younger siblings are starting homeschooling.
I have a video coming out on Thursday sharing my resources and tips. I hope you find it helpful!
Thank you for your review. I am doing dimensions KB with my 5 yr old now who will be joining kinder this aug. Found math with confidence n addition facct that sticks recently and switching kids from the 10 frame of 2 stacks of 5 to one horizontal one. Kids liked the stacked one better as they are used to it...but catching up on the horizontal one. Glad to see you are using diff curriculum. I was thinking may be I was I was mixing up too much with math in focus, dimensions and mwc and even how I was taught finger counting, which I tell them not to do that any more. I love all these. We are on to subtraction now and kate snows subtraction fact that sticks is on the way.
It always boggles my mind how one can talk about loving and respecting everyone and people are like “EWW, no way”.
I really appreciate the time and information you put into your videos. I geel like no matter what you are talking about its always helpful to me and my kiddos homeschool!
I’m so glad you find my channel helpful 😁
That Philosophy for kids book has been on my wishlist for a while. Do you know if any of the Torchlight levels incorporate it?
I am not sure. I know level 4 has philosophical studies. One of the books is Short & Curly which goes over ethical debates. My kids and I listen to their podcast. It’s really good! www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/shortandcurly
Thanks!
We used that Next President book a few years ago and I really liked it. My kids really like the Jr Genius guides. I need to check out the Faultlines book.
I knew it looked familiar, but I couldn’t place where I had seen it before. Did you talk about the animal page, because that’s what’s coming to my mind.
Love your videos . Thank you !
I always come away with so much inspiration for our homeschool after watching your videos. I relate so much to the culture of your homeschool and the vision you have for your children. Thank you for continually putting yourself out there and sharing the resources you find through your research. You are my absolute favorite homeschool channel. I just can't thank you enough for bringing fresh air to this homeschool space.
Thank you! I truly appreciate your kind words and that my channel has been helpful for you ❤️
My dd hates the phonetic zoo audios. I wish I had just read them to her, but she hates it before I figured that out.
I will keep that in mind, thanks for the suggestion!
Did you go with World history or US history for iew 2b? Have you noticed any problematic perspectives in the lessons?
I use the structure and style not the theme based units. The theme based units are religious based. I haven’t found any issues in the structure and style levels I’ve used.
