If I ever needed a former MS tech now would be the time.. I have this machine now for months it came with Windows10 and I've been apprehensive about installing linux because of the 'Intel Optane Module' that was included in my build. It comes in a raid0 with the mechanical HDD to give you SSD speed without compromising on storage space. When I first bought it I was reading that intel optane does not play nice with Linux, even Intel themselves were saying no Linux. Then they said you could install Linux but you needed to change the firmware on the Optane module. I see this ending in catastrophe I dont want to brick the Optane it actually works excellent with Windows. It has my windows install running super fast, I can only imagine what this could mean for an already fast lean Linux install. I know they use much larger Optane modules in enterprise, specifically in CEPH based clusters/data centers. Have you heard anything in this regard (Intel Optane with Linux), bottom line is I want to migrate my Windows install to another drive and install Debian to this Lenovo laptop with the Optane Module. Its 2TB HDD and 32GB Intel Optane. Even if you cant answer my question, if you could share any experience you have working with Optane/Windows, even if it was in enterprise, I would appreciate that very much , thanks Chris.

Best tools to use with windows is UnetBootin or Rufus. It lets you create a Flash Disk to install Linux and delete windows 10..

@@eskomo34 My question is all about the Intel Optane , and will it work with Linux, and if so do I need to change the firmware, and anything else pertinent that I should be aware of.. If anyone has dealt with this issue?

I like CCCP/MPC-HC better than VLC. It doesn't lock up when an incomplete video is launched and it will play most incomplete video's so you can preview them. Sadly there isn't a Linux version.
It's been awhile since I tried infranview but IMO XnView is better than InfranView. Even the Multi Platform version is better and allows customization. The default layout sucks but you can copy the ini for the layout file and reuse it.
I found CCleaner will uninstall things Windows doesn't give you the option to uninstall. (The background feature can be disabled under Options>Smart Cleaning.)
For PDF viewers I just use Firefox. I got sick of Acrobat being bloated and Foxit followed became no different. SumatraPDF is good if you need to view ebook files. CutePDF allows you to print to pdf files which is handy.

5:31 you blew it there. Windows AV automatically deletes files named "keygen.exe" and gives you NO CHOICE about quarantining them and simply scans ALL of your connected drives and automatically deletes files. I disabled Windows 10 antivirus. Windows has no business running programs under the table and deleting user files w/o their permission and knowledge.

    • @MAGAMAN
      @MAGAMAN Před 3 lety +4

Windows has no business doing 99% of what it does. It's an operating system and it's only functions should be allowing you to run programs and allowing you to manage the running program. That is ALL it should ever do.

What's your take on Faronics Deep Freeze? I have used this software on computers where i expect lot of people inserting USB thumb drives i assume are infected with malware. Deep Freeze is very useful in internet cafes and institutes where people train to use photoshop, premiere, 3ds max. etc. software's. I installed Deep Freeze only on C:\ where Windows is installed after configuring Windows and software's, and edited the desktop wallpaper instructing people to save data on D:\, E:\, etc. partitions which are not freezed. By doing this, you don't need antivirus except for manually scanning the other partitions and if Windows gets infected from thumb drives, you simply reboot and the malware is gone because Deep Freeze resets the partition every reboot to your specific frozen Windows and software configuration. Saved me ton of time from having to reinstall Windows again and again when people break or infect Windows.

This is my standard procedure. If anyone can .bat it, I'd love it! PS: I know for a fact that Auslogic Defrag, run on a HDD, DOES speed it up, fairly substanitally. I once had a guy call with a sloooooooow PC. Auslogic found & deleted over 300,000! temp files! He only had, like, 160k of legit files! The whole disk was fragmented. Afterwards, and after my tweaks-- all good to go & FAST! Would love to add mine to yours and create a tool that runs it all.
    My tweaks:
On desktop>right-click This PC>properties>advanced system settings>advanced tab>performance>settings button>tick best performance>choose animate controls...>thumbnails...>smooth fonts>apply. Advanced tab>virtual memory>change>untick automatic>tick custom>set both slots to DOUBLE your physical RAM, in mbs. (4GB = 4,000mbs)>set>ok>ok to the "settings were changed" box. You can restart later.
Next: click the start button>type %temp% and hit enter>select everything in the folder>right-click>delete. Say yes to the prompts to delete as admin. For any file which states it cannot remove>choose "skip all".
Go to This PC>open C:>go to Windows>go to temp> open temp and delete everything. Say yes to the prompts to delete as admin. For any file which states it cannot remove>choose "skip/all".
    Install Auslogic disk defrag free.
    www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/after-download/
Pay close attention as it installs to "skip all offers". Untick "start with Windows". Let it launch. Go to settings>program settings>disk cleanup>choose at least the first four. If you want the items permanently deleted, choose all. Algorithms>tick move files to the beginning & optimise by prefetch>ok. Close settings and click "defrag" (defrag hard drives only- NOT SSD's). See how many temp files it finds and deletes. Some people have tens of thousands. When it's complete, close Auslogic. NB: you'll get shown upgrade ads, just close them and ignore. The program is free, don't buy anything else.
Go to control panel>change view to large icons>power options>change plan settings>make sure than if it's set to "balanced", that the plugged-in brightness is at 100% and that minimum processor is set to 100% when plugged in. If you want to, you can go into the mouse settings and speed up the pointer speed under "pointer options". Apply or ok.
Open This PC, right-click C:>properties>untick "allow files to have contents indexed". Click "ignore all" when it says it cannot apply to certain files. It'll take it 5-10 mins to complete. Close the dialog box when it's completed.
Lastly, right-click My PC>manage>services and applications>services>scroll to Windows Search>stop the service>change auto to disabled>save>close the window.
If you have a LOT of files and search often, use "Search Everything". You can opt to have it run at boot, but I usually turn that off in options after I install it.
    www.voidtools.com/en-au/downloads/
When you're done with this, you should notice a HUGE improvement in speed/responsiveness.

Just subscribed to your channel! Ive been watching your videos on Windows 10 and the pros and cons, as well as the privacy concerns, and even some of your linux distro videos. Im glad to see that gaming on linux is seeing some progress as that is really the only thing keeping me from using a linux distro as my daily driver.
I did try Manjaro as I had built Arch previously a while back and while I loved it, it was quite a headache if something went wrong and I just didnt have the time to set everything up or fix any problems. Manjaro Architect is much more simple but still allows a fair amount of customization and I really enjoyed the week that I used it. Linux gaming still isnt where I want it to be in terms of compatibility, but Im going to use Windows 10 with some tweaks as my daily driver and use a VM with Manjaro and some other distros on the side so I can test any progress that comes as far as Proton and Wine compatibility. Thanks for all the helpful info and guides that youve put up!

The old Windows Photo Viewer is still in Windows 10. You must enable it through the registry to have it show up as an application to view photos. Once enabled, you can set it as the default image viewer. Not all image file formats can be viewed with Windows Photo Viewer and that hasn't changed.

I know that this is 3 years later but I have found on more than one occasion Microsoft is coming in writing scripts to bypass telemetry and other settings on 0&O. Software like this will only last for so long and oh an O&O has an outlived it's shelf life. I have found on more than one occasion (after implementing 100% settings on O&O) they are burying scripts to reveal telemetry but make it look like the app is working and all settings are still in place. What do you expect from a company that basically provides the software to keep them from spying on you.

Chris, how do you go about reversing some of these changes? I ran Tron script and at some point on an earlier install also ran the debloat script you have a video on. Ever since then Windows update and access to the Microsoft app store have been disabled (what i wanted to happen), but i now need Windows update enabled in order to install .NET framework 3.5. Similarly, I need to enable access to the Microsoft app store to install Nvidia control panel. I've searched through the group policies, registry, and Windows settings and for the most part didn't see anything changed (there were a couple registry entries i reverted back, but that didn't help). I even tried running ShutupWin10 (or whatever it's called) and running the revert to stock option. It allegedly reverted everything back, but not much actually changed. Definitely still can't run windows update. Any idea what to do? I am really trying to avoid rebuilding windows entirely.

Hey bro, was just wondering the best place to download this from...here on your site? is it safe? That sounds dumb, I just get things from the store as much as I can...anyways if it's cool and safe, love to add this to my arsenal

I have had issues O&O breaking Windows updates/features even on conservative settings, hence I don't use it any more. This was on OEM and DIY Rigs, and it's similar story with other tools that block Win services.
On another note have a look at Patch My PC, it's a better tool than Ninite but does a similar job with a wider range of software selections.

Notepad++? In the same list there is vs code, it has a LOT of features built in and a marketplace for extensions...
Also, why PuTTY when Windows 10 supports ssh natively?

I used ninite, but decided to move to Chocolatey. It has more packages (for example bleachbit) and is more similar to package managers linux; instead of selecting and downloading, you can install with single command: choco install -y package1 package2 ...

Tell me. Is there any way you can install Windows 10 and be confident it isn’t gonna Bork your system sooner or later? It seems that every PC I’ve installed it on eventually succumbs to some infuriation failure and I’m back to re-installing Windows 7. W7 = safe & dependable while W10 = flaky & unreliable - my estimation.
Hackintosh looks ideal, but not ideal long term. Linux looks better long term, but I love Fallout 4. Which path is best?

I have windows 10 and it tells me that it wants to update to a later version as mine it says will soon be out of date. My wife's computer updated to the latest but each time my computer tries it reaches a part of the install and says Windows could not configure one or more of the system components and so begins to reverse the changes and sets it back to how it was. How can I fix this issue. thanks

When you use O&O shutup and block updates how do you update then? I know you said to wait for the big updates what about all the smaller ones? Can you do a video of how you would do updates when you are running O&O shutup. Thanks.

For O&O ShutUp10, I was wondering if anyone can tell me why there are 3 _Disable Telemetry_ settings and which to choose? Google searches have yielded only vague, ambiguous explanations on what telemetry does. No answers on what these 3 levels mean, or if they might mess something up (like my VPN software).
