    Excellent video!! Mine turned out to be a bit more difficult. The cartridge would not come out even after using the white plastic tool to break the seal. Then while pulling with my pliers, the metal stem broke off. So then I was in panic mode because the shower was in the "on" position, and I could not turn the mains back on. To overcome that, I screwed a short screw into the center of the cartridge, where I could use a screwdriver to turn on and off the shower faucet temporarily till I figured out what to do. I finally ended up drilling 2 long deck screws into the plastic face of the cartridge in the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions and used my pliers to yank on them repeatedly. After many hard pulls, the cartridge finally came out. Turns out the black rubber gaskets on both sides of the cartridge somehow got caught in the inlet holes of the copper pipe. They tore loose when I pulled out the cartridge, so I had to remove the rubber bits with some needle nose pliers after taking the cartridge out. Just wanted to share my experience, but I appreciate your video!

      Thanks for sharing your experience Yankee Hank, sounds like you used your ingenuity and fortitude to "get the job done". You have the same mindset as the cable guy who used to say, "git'er done". I am glad you watched my video, and I am sure your comment will help others as they struggle to change the cartridge.

      My rubber pieces were also stuck in this grooves and broke off in there when I pulled it out. I had a hard time getting them out because I had to dig them out with a tiny flathead screwdriver and then grab the pieces with the needle nose pliers. I thought I was going to rip the plumbing out of the wall. When those rubber piece get legs in the grooves it's really really hard to get the cartridge out.

      @Cards-In-The-Closet Před 2 lety +2

      If had the rubber pieces bind up 🆙 n two of mine and break apart. Seems like none of it got stuck inside, but I turned the water on slightly to flush out any pieces that would come out.

    • @paulc1562
      @paulc1562  Před 2 lety +1

      Good advice about heating up the cartridge ( and pipe ) which will expand the pipe first, and cartridge will slip out easier. I see from your CZcams channel you give good advice, like turning a pantry into a food storage, and having first aid stuff ready and waiting.

  • @MultiplePassiveStreamsOfIncome

    Thanks for your video. It allowed me to fix a metal shower handle that came off. The handle adapter screw somehow was behind the handle adapter inside the metal handle. I unscrewed the outer metal handle screw with a very small straight head screwdriver. That allowed me to remove the black handle adapter that was inside the metal handle. I could hear a loose part when I shook the metal handle. That loose part was the handle adapter screw (1:16 of this video). I was then able to attach the handle adapter with the handle adapter screw back to the stem assembly and reattach the metal handle onto the handle adapter with the handle adapter screw. Without your video, I wouldn't have figured it out myself. Thanks again!

    Thank you so much Paul. If it was not for your video, I would never have attempted this myself. I'm happy to report that I replaced my old cartridge and that the pressure is back to normal.
    I wish to share my experience with others. I hope this will be helpful.
    My shower had lacked pressure for a good 10 years. Even more in the hot water position, just like in your video. My Moen posi-temp was installed by a plumber 25 years ago. I I had checked everything else regarding the plumbing and everything was okay. After viewing your video, I knew the problem was with the cartridge. I contacted Moen and they sent me a new cartridge, free of charge.
    I had many concerns of doing this myself since the installation is 25 years old. Everything must be tight (and it was ultimately). Anyhow, I proceeded and followed your video and the instructions that Moen provided. Moen strongly suggested a flush of the pipes, hot and cold, once the cartridge was removed. I did this and I know it was helpful.
    Everything went easily except for 2 things This is what I wish to share.
    1) It was VERY DIFFICULT to remove the old cartridge. Moen suggested a 1/4 turn clockwise with the plastic tool they provided with the new cartridge, to loosen it and remove it. This did not work easily. I yanked it in both directions for a good 45 minutes before it started to loosen. Many times, I thought of giving up. I was afraid of breaking something since I was using a lot of force. Despite these difficulties, I managed to loosen and remove it. I then performed the flush. I was now ready to install the new cartridge.
    2) Installing the new cartridge proved to be EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. I put the grease on the new cartridge as indicated. I was able to insert it about 75% of the way with MUCH difficulty. it took close to an hour to make it to 95%. I was pushing on the cartridge, as indicated in the Moen instructions, with my fingers. Many times, I thought of giving up. The cartridge must be fully inserted in order to reinsert the locking pin. After too many attempts with my fingers to go from 95% to 100% insertion, I had an idea. I used my visegrip tool for an extra push on the cartridge. Please be advised that I'm not sure Moen would 'endorse' this approach. One part of the tool was pushing on the top of the cartridge and the other part, on the bottom. This extra force enabled me to insert it completely. I think that maybe I should have greased the inside of the pipe. Maybe it would have been more easy.
    I completed the work. Everything works just fine now. Thanks for reading.

    Very good video! Thanks! I was able to pull this repair off with your advice and instructions. I would add that if you’re a novice do it yourself plumber like me...invest in a cartridge puller if you have hard water! And if the pipe on your water mixer is a bit built up with hard water deposits...hit it with limescale removal product and soak for a bit and even use petroleum jelly to reinstall the cartridge because it’s a tight fit in the pipe my cartridge only came with one lubricant packet and it just wasn’t enough...but it worked perfectly fine after following the instructions on this video! Thanks much! Have a good day! I will have a good day now that I have hot water in my shower again! lol

      Sometimes it takes alot of "elbow grease" to break that seal, also Home Depot sells something called a "puller" device that might help. Also if you want to get wet turn the water on and it neutralizes the pressure - but that would be the messy way! LOL
