This is a great reminder of how the USA once operated the fastest passenger trains in the world, even faster than the fastest in Britain. Into the 1990s, there were still four-indication color light signals on the route of the Hiawatha, today's CP Rail line, standing as mute reminders of a glorious past.

As cool as it would be the only purpose to rebuild this would be for excursion services which would never be guaranteed and incredibly expensive to build. It would even be hard for a nyc Hudson to be rebuild even though it is so iconic.

All you really need is somebody like Paul Allen being obsessed with trains instead of shipwrecks. How much would it cost to build such a machine today? A lot less than some things society pisses away money on. I'd rather see the government pay to have reproductions of iconic things from our past built than just hand people money.
Coming back here after moving to the Minneapolis area and putting in work with the amazing folks with the 261. Thought this was cool six years ago when it first came out, but now being able to recognize the places and the heritage of the Milwaukee Road makes this even more special for me. For work every day, I park at the very depot in downtown Minneapolis that the Hiawatha left from. What you guys did here is nothing short of amazing.

You do such fantastic work and videos watching this I literally felt like I had almost step back in time there's never a day that goes by that I wish I was born in 1890 instead of 1990 and I could have seen this all but in this day and age at least we will always remember it as Jim Wrinn said "the magical rein of steam might be over but it will never be forgotten".
Theres a reason I added that quote to the end of the N&W 1218 video. It couldn't be anymore true!

Yes, there's romance in this, but I prefer pooping in a porcelain pot, and for folks born in 1890, that wasn't many of them.

Simply spectacular! Not only have you built an incredible locomotive and coach set, but an equally amazing video documentary to go with it. I loved hearing the history and technical specifications on the whole thing - the more information, the merrier! Can't wait to pick this up, and apparently the 261 with it later down the line! Awesome job Steve!

I saw it many many times, we lived a block from the tracks, some woods near also, kids make a huge slingshot, shot rocks thru the windows, the RR detectives soon put an end to that. Luckily I was on the farm for the summer, never got mixed up with it.
My mother grew up in the 30s and 40s with only a ditch and a fence and about half a block of open space separating her back yard from the Milwaukee main line in Aberdeen SD. When I was a kid, I used to watch all the trains pass by, sitting in a lawn chair in the back yard in Aberdeen.

Nicely done. My dad grew up in Perry Iowa which I believe was a division headquarters for the Milwaukee. He worked as a fireman immediately after high school in 1945 while waiting to get drafted which happened in 1946. Go figure. After the army and college as a Mechanical Engineer he went back to the Milwaukee rising to Trainmaster in Milwaukee. He left the Road in 1953 and joined Wisconsin Electric Power Co. Their headquarters was immediately northeast of the Milwaukee station at the time. At 3:36 in the video a Hiawatha train set is sitting at the Milwaukee station with the Wisconsin Electric Power Co sign on top of the building behind the train. I would love to have a copy of that still image.
The Milwaukee’s freight house in Kansas City is today the home to three very nice restaurants with lots of exposed brick.

@Isaac Brown It's actually Grand Trunk Western. Ohio Central is the railroad that restored the locomotive, not built it.

Excellent! Nice to see Wisconsin Dells feature in the vid. We passed through there back in '72 on the way to Seattle. That was by Greyhound though, not train sadly!!! Guess my CC's in for a hammering, just noticed a few other new ones on the site I 'need'!
Brilliant well done! In diesel days she would fly through West Lake forest. Had the full window observation car. mid 60s still competing with the great CN&W 400 and the Bi-levels.

I know you get a lot of people that ask you to make all of these different mods, and while I love what you do and wish you could make more, I just want to take the time to thank you for what you have done. I have only purchased the N&W 1218 and it beats almost every other locomotive that I've found out there, not to mention being the only Class A 2-6-6-4 out for T:ANE. Again, thanks for all that you do. Chris.
Thanks! I make what I am commissioned to make, and as fast as I can. Everything i've made for the last 3 years, everything on the current projects page, and everything coming up for the next 2 years is all custom commissioned work. I do all the modeling, promo, website, sales and tech support work myself, and with everyone expecting more and more details and features, I can only work so fast. I think 8-10 releases (most with promos that take weeks to make) each year is fairly good for essentially a one man show. 1218 was one of the hardest projects i've worked on, both model and promo wise. It was the first articulated engine i've made, and not to mention the amount of crap on that thing is staggering. The promo took almost as long as the model took to make. I believe there is an A available on PaulzTrainz, but i'll let you be the judge of that one.
I just looked at PaulzTrainz, and they are no where near yours, and yet cost about the same amount. Man, I'd be commissioning so many different projects if only I could. I'm a big fan of the Norfolk and Western as well as the Union Pacific, but I just have steam in my blood if that makes sense. I just wish I had the chance to railfan a bit more. I am a senior just getting out of high school, so I'm trying to save up for college, therefore I can't make many big trips. If only I knew how to make these models myself...... It'll be awesome to see some of the new steamers being restored to ride the rails again. If only they would actually restore the 1218, then I wouldn't need to use Trainz or CZcams to see it operate. Oh well, maybe someday.

Well,K&L,you have done it again! You amazed us all with this promo and even better the Engine and Cars that come along with it. Sadly,I won’t buy it,since I am working on a B&O Railroad Museum for Trainz and I need to buy engines and rolling stock first,and even though I put 2 items in my cart,It costs in all $25.50. I really don’t want to buy things that are useless to me. But in all,It is great. Looking forward to 261 to come so when the IRM for Trainz route is out,I can put 265 on there.

As a child I had the privilege of riding the New York Central's 20th Century Limited from NYC up to Buffalo. Beautiful awe inspiring trains leave their mark on you. We COULD build rapid tech trains that run at 400 mph, and we should. Let your voices be heard.

Every so often they pull these out and run them for nostalgic events, the Hiawatha shut down around 70-71 but Amtrak has and still does offer the same route on the old trains, we were on one such run in 79 or early 80 I cannot remember exactly. I am modeling this very run on my layout soon as I can locate all the train cars without taking a 2nd mortgage lol
One thing people need to understand. Yes things were tough for a lot of people during the Great Depression. Unemployment was high. But the whole country was not the Dust Bowl, the whole country was not out of work. Businesses might have reduced their operations or had short weeks. Even in those tough economic times there were two auto makers that made a profit every year. GM and Nash. Ford developed and introduced its flathead V-8. A move that probably saved Ford Motor Company from going out of business. Both of my grandfathers were never out of work for any length of time during the Depression. One was a stationary engineer for a brass and copper tube, ingot an sheet mill. The other was a Tool and Diemaker working in Chicago. And he primarily worked for companies that made tinplate toys. If toy companies were surviving it was not entirely doom and gloom. Today there is some thought that the intervention of the Roosevelt Administration probably worsened the Depression. Especially during his second term. In the end the thing that really got the US out of the Depression was the rapidly expanding military production needed not only by the US but other nations. It's not a nice way to get out of hard economic times but it put people to work in industry making enough money to live on. Also in the 30s. People were still buying houses, cars, refrigerators etc. Two of the most iconic industrial products ever produced in the United States were produced or designed in the 1930's. The Ford Model A* and the Douglas DC-3. One of the th things that the Roosevelt Administration did was expanding the US Navy even prior to the Two Ocean Navy Act. FDR realized that expenditure on the Navy helped keep vital industries alive. The steel industry and ship building are just two. The Army Air Corp and Naval Aviation all through the 30s helped finance developments in aviation especially aircraft engines. But the most important programs the Roosevelt Administration undertook during the depression IMO were the expansion of the electricity grid into rural areas along with major hydroelectric and irrigation projects. Some of which were actually started under the Hoover Administration or been in planning for a long time. Boulder Dam, Grand Coulee, the TVA and others.

Yea, I didn't want to, but the airhorn does NOT work well with the 3 part method.....This will be the first, and hopefully ONLY time I do a 2 part.
