  • Please check out our new channel Garage Life and subscribe! / @garagelife Today I show you how to install an underdrive lightweight crank pulley on my 2002 Lexus Is300 with the 2JZ. Do you think installing this pulley will destroy the engine? I had one installed on 2 different cars for a significant amount of time with zero issues. Keep in mind this is a low horse power and low revving setup.

    I use to work for a company that was a big manufacturer of lightweight aluminum pulleys and with strong knowledge of that market, data testing etc... as well as use on personal vehicles I can say confidently that running a pulley like this will not harm your engine. Low or high hp. A quality product goes a long way.

      Homebrew Subaru Lightweight pulleys aren't gonna kill a Subaru since they don't have harmonic balancers. However the underdrive pulleys cause problems with 2JZ engines because of they do need the harmonic balancers to absorb the vibration of the engine instead of transferring it to the bearings and screwing stuff up. Lotsa info on MKIV/Supraforums about it.

    • @HomebrewSubaru
      @HomebrewSubaru Před 7 lety

      Although that may be true about 2J's, all Subaru "crank pulleys" come with harmonic dampening.

    my intake camshaft is out of timing after trying to remove the vvti pulley with an air gun by mistake, can i rotate it the left or the right?

    • @TheKinkedwhale
      @TheKinkedwhale Před 3 lety

      How far off, like it rotated one tooth, youll need to set the crank to 0° and pull off the harmonic balancer, remove all 3 timing chain covers, the easiest way to loosen the belt is to undo the two 12mm(maybe 10mm) and loosen the whole tensioner assembly. Then it gives enough slack to let you rotate the cam thats out of time. Moving the cam with the belt still on with slack in it is easier than removing the belt fully

    • @TheKinkedwhale
      @TheKinkedwhale Před 3 lety

      I have also changed cam gears on the 2j and set timing without removing anything but the top cam gear cover but if you are already to the point of taking the balancer off and already trying to fix a mistake id just take all the covers off and make sure you do it right

    • @TheKinkedwhale
      @TheKinkedwhale Před 3 lety

      Far as getting the bolt loose take a 1/2 ratchet with a socket and a 2lb hammer and smack the ratchet, the impact will break it free after a couple whacks.

    Here are the facts rather than guesswork; If you have a front vibration damper on your crank it's there for a reason and you need one. Manufacturers don't waste millions of dollars over hundreds of thousands of cars. If they put it there, you need it. There is nothing wrong with an underdrive damper though. The exception is if you have a dual mass flywheel. That will act as a damper and smooth out the crank thrust to save your bearings. Everything else is just bullshit.
