We saw a gas station get shot up, we were in a bank during a robbery, my dad had to carry a gun during the Rodney king riots just to get to work, and I’ll never forget one day when our mom was bring us home from somewhere and while driving down the street some guy was running and banging on her windows begging her to let him in because “they were going to kill him”. Just pleading but she said she couldn’t because her kids were in the car and she didn’t want us to get shot. it was just an average day down there at this time.

    • @qmagoo4615
      @qmagoo4615 Před 5 lety +83

      Famous last words "I COULDN'T TAKE THOSE WHITE BOYS SERIOUS".
      At 14 i was locked up in Durango. One afternoon this big tall clumsy kid hit the unit. In juvie they made everyone sit on the carpet under the TV in the day room, when we were out of your cells.
      We had all already been on the carpet when this this big tall nerdy dude takes a squat on the carpet. No sooner than he sits down these three self proclaimed "gangstas" start bagging on the kid. They were clowing his big feet, his big ears and how gangly the kid was.
      Imagine their surprise while as their clowing the kid, breaking news comes across the TV with the big kids picture. Him and another straight nerd looking kid had massacred nine Buddhists in their temple. The wind was taken out of the three gangstas and they got quiet as church mice. They were legitimately scared, which they should of been because at the time the kid was possibly facing the death penalty so he had nothing to lose.
      By 14 i had already learned to never underestimate anyone but witnessing that event definitely reassured that notion.
      The kids name was Alessandro Garcia, he was one of the Buddhist Temple killers here in Phoenix back in 1991. I ended up meeting the other kid Jonathan Doody during that bid also. At first glance they both looked like straight nerds that you would of never suspected of doing a crime so heinous.
      They both recieved several life sentances.

      You're 100 right I'm from the Logan heights neighborhood and we were terrorizing all surrounding neighborhoods and vice versa. The 80's were fueled by heroin and crack cocaine along with guns and squads of gang members by the dozens. Every street had cliques of 15-20 homeboys just awaiting in the trenches like lions in the jungle ready to attack anything and anyone who either blinked or winked. 1989 I was shot at the memorial park fair by a rival hood. It was a drive by and just remember that whole week it was retaliation for that lasted 12 days it was known as the valentines day massacre if you know you know. Shotgun to the stomach don't know how I survived but I did and think you LORD for not taking me that day....

    This is a part of documentary from 1985. There was a lot more to this than what's shown here. There's some footage in the original video of black gangs roaming Venice Beach. The narrator even says that Venice Beach is very dangerous because of regular shootings at that time. It seems that it was worse then than now because the kind of violence back then has decreased dramatically. I remember watching the entire show on TV and recording it on a VCR around September of 1985. I still have that video tape. Things were just as bad at that time as they are now. Of course, each era seems worse than the previous one but I remember that gang violence seemed to be worse in the early 80s than it is now. Things seemed to taper off after 1983 because of break dancing and how kids would challenge each other through dance rather than guns or knives. But it lasted only for a bit. The oldest gangs in L.A. go back to the beginning of the 20th century and a few to the late 19th century. Some were started by Irish and Italian gangs but they're primarily Latino and still going strong. This proves how gangs will never go away, as much as stupid politicians try to make us believe that they're doing something to "stop" the violence. They're more concerned with containing gangs and gang violence than anything else.

      I remember very well. I had or still have an article somewhere that I cut out from an L.A. Times paper about a Caucasian man who was shot and killed some time in 1982 because he wore Stacy Adams shoes. Back then those shoes were associated with gangs. And I remember the constant killings and drive-by shootings throughout the early 80s. You had to be very careful where you walked even during the day. It was a scary time.

      @@seanmcguire7974 Tortilla Flats is originally from the Boyle Heights area of East L.A. and before the gang was created.....The area where the gang was founded was known as the Russian Flats or just The Flats. Back in the early 1900s there was nothing but apartments in that area...or as the Europeans call them....Flats. During the late 1930s the city of Los Angeles tore down the flats and erected the Aliso Village projects. By the end of WW2 the majority of non Mexican families moved out and the Mexicans moved in. Soon after the gang Tortilla Flats was created. It took its name from this local tortilla factory.....they put Flats on the end because that area has always been known as the Flats. Hence the name Tortilla Flats. By the 1950s the area was split by the newly built I10 and 101 freeways.....and soon after Tortilla Flats got split up into 3 gangs....Primera Flats aka 1st Flats, Tercera Flats aka 3rd street Flats and Cuatro Flats aka 4th Street Flats. 3rd Street Flats didn't last long and got absorb by the bigger Primera and Cuatro gangs. As for the Tortilla Flats gang it managed to survive but in a different area which was the city of Compton. It was the Mendoza brothers that were originally from Boyle Heights that moved to the Willowbrook section of Compton in the early 1960s and continued to represent Tortilla Flats. The Compton Varrio Tortilla Flats gang has been in Compton ever since.....

    My entire life I whined about what a tough childhood I had in 1990s Romania. I was always beaten up and robbed by bullies, threatened, mocked, picked on...my worst fear was of getting punched in the mouth and losing a tooth...this was my greatest fear, I'm not joking...while at the very same time, kids my age on the other side of the world were more worried about getting shot, stabbed, maimed and killed. I was afraid of losing my baby teeth while they were they were afraid of losing their very lives...it's only now when I watch these documentaries that I realize how much safer my life was back then despite all the poverty and corruption we had to face. I also realize how ridiculous my whining sounded and how grateful I should be to whoever insured that level of safety for us. There were no guns or drugs to go around...only petty violence and poverty.

      So instead of a subset of the country’s population your entire country was a victim. A population that is unable to defend itself aren’t citizens they’re subjects.
      The issue here is the lack of a father in the home more often than not; or at least a male role model. Often they’re in prison and the children look up to them still. Add that to poverty and one less income in the home and they feel they have to go out and get it themselves…. All the results of Democratic lawmaking in urban areas. The implementation of welfare and public housing meant if you’re a single mother, the more children you have the more money the government gives you basically incentivizing a single parent household and perpetuating the cycle.
      The large majority of children in America don’t have guns. It’s usually in those same urban areas where you buy stolen guns off the street. The majority of kids shooting each other is also in the same areas because of a pack mentality. The modern media will make many believe that most shootings done by kids are white kids going on sprees. In a population of 330 million that probably happens a dozen times annually at most. Whereas in cities like Chicago there are hundreds of murders yearly. So with this added to everything else, and a media/government unwilling to address the actual issue it’ll continue to get worse….. but again, it’s some kids in urban areas. In your home country everyone is a victim.
