Hi from Ireland. I had a routine every year where I would buy seeds, sow them in (what I know now to be) an inappropriate growing medium, watch them fail and swear that I’d never do any of it again. Of course the next year, I’d start all over again. I’ve learned so much from just watching your videos that I’ve tried again this year and had great success with everything. Thank you so much for your easy and relaxed teaching style and please keep up the good work.

When growing seedlings in the summer especially (Zone 9B) I've noticed that I often need to "stake" my seedlings using a combination of either toothpicks or kabob skewers to keep the plants from laying down in the dirt, which often kill the seedlings if the soil surface is moist. Sometimes I'll need to use zipties too, to have them stay up on the stakes.

You have been so thorough and ridiculously clear and concise. I have a green thumb from the heavens(my Dad who got me into gardening has passed on). This is my first attempt at growing from seeds for Veggies and Flowers. I was so excited to see the growth, but I am doing somethings wrong. I have all these leggy weak vegetable seedlings. Flowers too. The bulbs are thriving. I'm hoping save as many as I can because I've so much luv and pampering into them. I'm on about my 3rd watch of this video learning corrective techniques. The prices of bedding plants are stupid high, but even before this inflation madness, I'd been planning and trying to learning about starting from seeds indoors. I love and appreciate that your videos are about lessons and not social media fame.

Hi, im from Manila Philippines. There are only 2 types of season, summer and rainy season. I am a newbie in gardening. I put the seeds in a seedling tray just like yours and cover it with plastic. Out of 8 different seeds only 1 so far has germinated. My question is: Should I still continue to cover it in plastic and wait for the others to germinate? I live in a condominium and don’t have a direct sunlight by the way, only bright light from the window. Thank you.

My mom had such a great green thumb, she could grow anything with little to no effort. She collected as many different types of African Violets she could find, and when she went on vacation she asked me to water them, I was so afraid I'd kill them because unlike her I had a very brown thumb. I would go to her house and water them trying to make sure I didn't get water on the leaves. That was the main thing she stressed for me to do. She had a whole windowed room full of African Violets, she loved them. She never said anything about whether or not I killed any, so hopefully I didn't.
I've tried growing things from seeds in the past and didn't have much luck, but I'm going to try it again this year. Hopefully with all the information out there like your wonderful video, maybe I can do better. So I thank you for all the in-depth information. I'm sure I will do better.

Really enjoyed this tutorial. I have a south facing balcony and store bought herbs and chillies are doing well out there ... the main thing seems to be to keep harvesting. A chervil plant I was given didn't make it, and on a whim I put some chilli seeds almost on top of the soil in the vacant pot. For a few weeks ... nada. Then one plucky little chilli plant appeared on the very edge of the pot. While I was contemplating how to centralise or repot it ... and procrastinating ... two weeks later ... another 10 have sprouted overnight! It suddenly looks like very poor social distancing in there. So I have my work cut out to help at least one or two get underway. The plus side: out on the balcony they get a lot sun and breeze (for right now, anyway) and some enthusiastic rain as well, so if they make it into larger, discrete containers safely, they'll be pretty hardy from the get go and can be transplanted into my son's garden below our flat. :^)

Just a side note; spindly tomato plants can be used to grow some of the best tomato plants. (the long hairy stims, need to be buried on transplant.) All of the hairs will then become a set of roots making your tomato plants root system much larger than normal.

I made a killer grow light using three 6,500K color LED headlight bulbs that were laying around. My mistake was putting reflectors on two of them, which focuses the light at a certain distance. I need to remove them for this season, but they are SUPER bright! Have it suspended from chains on the ceiling, so it is height adjustable as well.

When it comes to basil I try hard to plant one seed per module cell now because last year it was such hard work separating the seedlings out for onward transplanting. I fill the modules with compost and settle myself down in a chair with the module tray nearby at a comfortable height. I put on my reading glasses and pour the seeds into my left (dry) hand, Now I mark the starting column with a plastic label and take another one and carefully use the tip to remove a single seed from my palm and drop it into a cell. Carefully I move down cell by cell whilst counting until I reach the last row and then I move the column marker along one and repeat.
It takes patience but I find it works quite well and when transplant time comes it is quite easy to loosen a cell with a plastic label, extract the seedling and drop it into the next growing vessel.

You have more patience than I do, Mike! Good on you for taking the time up front to make it easier down the road. I have to admit that I usually just pull apart basil seedlings into clusters of 4 to 6 and pot those on, rather than pricking out individual seedlings. Although the mature plants are a little crowded, they still produce a prolific harvest.

Have you tried the WINSTRIP germination trays? I like them better (easier & faster) than soil blocks, and because of the air slits on the sides they grow great roots systems without getting root bound. Big hole on bottom of each cell for great bottom watering (I use wicking mats-but not mandadory). Holes make it easy to push seedling up and out for transplanting. The trays (mine are 50 cell) are VERY strong and won't bend. You can stand on them! Fit inside a standard 1020 tray. I think they are only available from Neversink Farms and are a little pricey, but reuseable, washable (soapy warm water, rinse, then dip in bleach/water and dry - store for next use. I love them.

as soon as it is warm enough for me to move my plants outside for some good sunlight i take them out and put them in full sun on a table and leave them there all day. if the temps are going to be warm overnight i will leave them out all night.
i do not start them in the shade or ease them into getting used to the sun. i just make sure i water them more often outside as the sun will heat up the black soil mix and dry it out a lot faster than indoors. the daytime temps usually have to get up around 60 before i move them outside but if it was hotter (say around 80 or so) i would gradually get them used to the outdoors.
in my area around april 15th the danger of frost is supposed to be past so i will transplant the ones big enough to my garden. the smaller ones i leave in containers till they grow large enough to place in my garden.

It sounds like you have a system that works for you, Paul. All I can say is that if I were to do what you suggest here in Tucson, I would have crisp, dead leaves and seedlings. (even hardening them off slowly resulted in sun scald on some of my hot peppers this year). In a milder climate with less intense sunlight, you might get away with it.
Still, it's considered best practice to harden seedlings off slowly - gives them the best shot at success.
