- This video will teach you the basics of subnetting. Every Subnetting problem will ask you to solve for one or more of seven possible attributes: Network ID, Broadcast IP, First Host IP, Last Host IP, Next Network, Number of IP Addresses, and CIDR/Subnet Mask conversions. This video explains what each of the attributes are.
What if there were a single video series that could make you a Subnetting Master? What if that video series were available for free, for everyone?
Look no further. This is it. This is video 1 of the series. The complete video series will make you a Subnetting Pro.

First, thank you SO much for this video series. Before watching, I had used Keith Owens, James Messer, and Jason Dion and all of them have their benefits in terms of detail or practicality. However, your video series absolutely solidified the practical application of subnetting as none of the others had. It just totally nailed it for me. I can do it now. Thanks again!
This leads me to a question. Is there a reason you don't list the seven questions in an order that would make the arrangement more sequential?
This pattern always leads to a 2/3 sequential relationship.
Two IP's in sequence, Three IP's in sequence.
Network/ First IP (2), Last IP,/Broadcast/Next Net (3).
For example:
Target: 10.1.1.37 /29
Network ID: 10.1.1.32
First IP: 10.1.1.33
Last IP: 10.1.1.38
Broadcast IP: 10.1.1.39
Next Network: 10.1.1.40
# Of IP's / Usable: 8/6
CIDR / Subnet: 255.255.255.248
Yea, if I'm honest that is a more sensible way of laying it out. The truth is the 7 attributes were listed that way in my notes when I made the video. I didn't think to optimize the order. Maybe at the time I chose intentionally not to, to further highlight that you can solve for each independent of the others.
But yea, if I could tell the me from 3.5 years ago when I made those videos to make the order more sensible, I definitely would have =)
@@PracticalNetworking Your humble reply is so refreshing. But yeah, it totally works either way! I can't thank you enough for this series.
@@Frank44060 Cheers Frank! You're very welcome!
For those who just got here, I assure you that you can learn subnetting with this guy! I've not found any paid or free content such well done and easy to understand, I really appreciate it. Thank you, Ed!
Whoa thank YOU for the kind words, Hugo. I appreciate the recommendation. Glad you enjoyed this content =)
I have had subnetting explained to me a half dozen times and still walked away scratching my head. I felt like such an idiot!! I don't feel like an idiot anymore. Thank you so much for being such an excellent teacher!
That's great news, Connie! I'm so happy that it now makes sense to you. Congrats =). And thank you for the kind words.
Found your videos after 5 weeks of working for Network + Cert. Your videos made more sense than the damned explanation Certmaster has for Subnetting, and the book I got had 3 questions and 1 PBQ regarding subnets on my network + test today and passed. highly doubt I would have passed if I had not found your videos. Thank you!!!!
Congrats on passing Net+ !! Well done. Glad you found my content help. Cheers!
been studying for my networks final all day and havent felt like i fully understood subnetting. and the examples and visuals you did in the first 2 minutes unlocked my brain. THANK YOU!
Moving on to this set after Networking Fundamentals, I'm already in it to win it. Purchased Ed's courses on OpenSSL and OSPF, and will be tearing into them after this playlist. LOVING IT!
You honestly need more view. No bad quality video of a piece of paper, no dude with horrible sounds quality in front of a white board doing horrible drawing, straight to the point, and simple to follow. You managed to teach me something that took my prof 4 weeks to barely scratch the surface. Thank you so much.
Hi Riceyz
Been watching videos about this for years and this is by far the best
No doubt blend of passionate teaching along with good presentaion skill , not forgetting the crystal knowledge on networking, makes the master piece. But sadly very less people are exposed to this channel. I recommended friend of mine. He was surprised too. I am truly blessed to encounter this channel. May everyone be blessed too. Thank you so much.
I struggled with subnetting in my last networking class. I am so grateful for this video. I completely understand the process of subnetting now, and this will help me in my IT career.
I'm studying for the Google IT Support Professional Certificate and this explanation is far better than the one provided in the course. Thank you! Liked and subscribed!
Wow, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Just started my CCNA. Man does it feel scary after my first 10 days. Subnetting in particular. You explained things that I couldn't understand 3 days in a classroom with a guy that is being paid to teach this to us. Thank you!
I've taught many CCNA classes, and I think I found the best way to teach Subnetting. I hope I captured it in this video series. Thank you for the kind words.
I have a feeling you gonna make it bro. Keep the faith and soldier on brother.
@@malluk4127 Thank you =)
Wait till you do IPV6
This is the best video on Subnetting and Subnet mask. I tried to understand these concepts multiple times from various people and resources but failed consistently to understand these concepts. By going through the series of videos - subnetting mastery, I am able to understand them just like that. Thank you so much and appreciate your efforts in making these concepts simpler.
Thanks for the kind words, Amos, I'm glad you got so much out of this series!
Agreed!
FAKE FAKE FAKE Whooo!!! You talk bullshit… these posittive reactions cant be reall
I am studying network and infrastructure and there was a 6 month unexpected pause in my studies. I was a bit afraid that I forgot some things. These series are the perfect memory refreshment.Thank you !!
Best subnetting video series ever. I jumped around looking for something like this. Glad I finally found it. Succinctly Simplified Subnetting!
I can't thank you enough for your efforts in making these videos. I took my Network+ exam yesterday and passed! Couldn't have done it without your help. :) Onto CCNA now....

I can't believe it!!! He is literally explaining and answering every single part of subnetting something that I have been struggling to find and to understand. Thank you very much, coach.

Enjoying and finding that there is such simplicity and thoroughness in explaining subnetting. 😮Thank you for your fantastic videos! 😊
First, I am working on getting my Network+ Cert and for someone with out a string networking background, I’m finding it a bit difficult.
That being said, I read the chapter in the book I’m studying from on Subnetmasking 3 times and was just not understanding how to get this information! I came across this video, and you made it SO much easier to understand and get!
Thank you so much for doing this video series! I was a life saver!
OMG, finally a video about subnetting that actually makes sense. The visuals helped a lot too. NICE 👍🏾
Hi Nunyo, glad you enjoyed the video =)
BEST BREAK DOWN OF SUBNETTING ON THE INTERNET!!! I HAVE BEEN SOOOO FRUSTRATED FOR THE LAST 2 WEEKS TRYING TO UNDERSTAND SUBNETTING BUT THIS VIDEO DEFINITELY HELPED PUT 2 AND 2 TOGETHER!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH :)
Glad it makes sense now, Pee Jay =). You're very welcome.
Why isn’t this the number one result when searching subnetting. So concise. Quality Production. I’ve seen videos with ten times the views with crap quality video and audio, confusing, and scrambled that I leave as confused or more than when I started. I literally send this link to everyone that asks for help with Subnetting. Thank you a thousand times over for this.
If I knew how to market better these videos might get more attention. =) But it seems I am better at teaching than I am at marketing. =/
Thanks for sharing this content, Talan. I appreciate the kind words.
Hello Ed, just came by to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the subnetting series. This was the light bulb moment for me and it helped me pass my CCNA today. Again, thank you!

Again i wanted to thank you, i watched so many videos and been in class for this topc but thanks to your video series i fully understand ipv4 subnettig, yesterday we started with ipv6 in class. And again, my prof is more confusing then helpful. Would be nice if you would do a series on ipv6.
Hey Ed. I just subscribed to your Practical Networking channel. I saw your video on Utube while viewing programming and database videos.
I have a systems administration background, but I was not sure what certification to pursue. Also, I passed the CompTIA A+ examination in July, 2013. Your Networking Fundamentals video sparked my interest in Networking. Your style and methods of teaching these concepts through your slides and explanations fit my learning style.
I have watched dozens of your videos. You are a terrific teacher. Thank you, Ed. I have been watching your videos - sometimes twice or thrice - and enjoyed and learned a lot. I plan to take the Cisco CCNA certification test soon after thorough Packet Tracer labs.
Hi Rajendra. Thank you for the kind words. I'm so happy you've gotten a lot out of the Networking series =).
If you're wiling, the best way to bring attention to this content is via word of mouth. I'm sure you have peers that could also benefit from this content. Sharing would be greatly appreciated =).
Cheers Raj! Good luck with the CCNA!
Holy crap! This is excellent. My instructor couldn't do a 100th of the job explaining it as well. Thank you!

Ha, congrats on mastering it =) So glad the video's helped!
I'm working on some recorded classes. Hopefully by the end of the year. In the mean time, I have a FLSM/VLSM video coming out soon. Stay tuned!
Thanks man. Subscribed
Great content!
Excellent tutorial..!
Subnetting is simply taking a list of individual IP addresses and grouping them together. The number of IP addresses never changes, but the number of groups does based on how you subnet/group the IPs.
Great video!
Came here from a reddit share and actually understood this first video. Apparently I'm not the only one who lost hours learning from other sources. I'll finish the playlist tomorrow, hopefully the last one on this subject.
Hey Mike! Glad Subnetting makes more sense =). Were you able to make it through the rest of the videos in the series? How did they go?
@@PracticalNetworking Yeah I finished it, you're the subnetting GOD, everything was clear. The only issue I have is, sometimes a quiz asks to calculate subnet without giving CIDR, only x.x.x.x. I posted this in later videos, not sure how to solve it.
@@am33x Odd, I can see the e-mail from that comment, but not the comment anymore to respond. Strange.
In any case... in those situations, you are looking at a legacy / outdated question. It's asking you to infer the Subnet Mask from the Classful address (i.e., the first Octet). This article has more details: www.practicalnetworking.net/stand-alone/classful-cidr-flsm-vlsm/
But again, in the world of Networking after the mid 90's, providing a Network ID w/o a Mask as a starting point is incomplete information.
@@PracticalNetworking Thanks a lot! Next time someone struggles with subnetting, I'll redirect them here.
This is a great video! Thank you so much. really really helpful
