  • This video will teach you the basics of subnetting. Every Subnetting problem will ask you to solve for one or more of seven possible attributes: Network ID, Broadcast IP, First Host IP, Last Host IP, Next Network, Number of IP Addresses, and CIDR/Subnet Mask conversions. This video explains what each of the attributes are.
What if there were a single video series that could make you a Subnetting Master? What if that video series were available for free, for everyone?
Look no further. This is it. This is video 1 of the series. The complete video series will make you a Subnetting Pro.

First, thank you SO much for this video series. Before watching, I had used Keith Owens, James Messer, and Jason Dion and all of them have their benefits in terms of detail or practicality. However, your video series absolutely solidified the practical application of subnetting as none of the others had. It just totally nailed it for me. I can do it now. Thanks again!
This leads me to a question. Is there a reason you don't list the seven questions in an order that would make the arrangement more sequential?
This pattern always leads to a 2/3 sequential relationship.
Two IP's in sequence, Three IP's in sequence.
    Network/ First IP (2), Last IP,/Broadcast/Next Net (3).
    For example:
    Target: 10.1.1.37 /29
    Network ID: 10.1.1.32
    First IP: 10.1.1.33
    Last IP: 10.1.1.38
    Broadcast IP: 10.1.1.39
    Next Network: 10.1.1.40
    # Of IP's / Usable: 8/6
    CIDR / Subnet: 255.255.255.248

Yea, if I'm honest that is a more sensible way of laying it out. The truth is the 7 attributes were listed that way in my notes when I made the video. I didn't think to optimize the order. Maybe at the time I chose intentionally not to, to further highlight that you can solve for each independent of the others.
But yea, if I could tell the me from 3.5 years ago when I made those videos to make the order more sensible, I definitely would have =)

Subnetting is simply taking a list of individual IP addresses and grouping them together. The number of IP addresses never changes, but the number of groups does based on how you subnet/group the IPs.

@@PracticalNetworking Yeah I finished it, you're the subnetting GOD, everything was clear. The only issue I have is, sometimes a quiz asks to calculate subnet without giving CIDR, only x.x.x.x. I posted this in later videos, not sure how to solve it.

@@am33x Odd, I can see the e-mail from that comment, but not the comment anymore to respond. Strange.
In any case... in those situations, you are looking at a legacy / outdated question. It's asking you to infer the Subnet Mask from the Classful address (i.e., the first Octet). This article has more details: www.practicalnetworking.net/stand-alone/classful-cidr-flsm-vlsm/
But again, in the world of Networking after the mid 90's, providing a Network ID w/o a Mask as a starting point is incomplete information.
