  • This was our scramble of Mt. Yamnuska Feb. 26 - 2016. The day was really warm for February being about +11 or so. Windy up top though. This scramble is so nice because your scenery is always changing, not just a trudge through the trees like some hikes can be. Love the chains and the cliff face as well as some of the best scree you will ever ski down. #thenorthface @thenorthface #keencanada #keen #keenfootwear

    On September 5 I did a solo ascent of Mt Yamnuska. Solo in the sense that I was not scrambling with a partner, but certainly not solo on the mountain. I must have come across 3 dozen people on the scramble. :)

    I used to do Yamnuska a lot when I was at the U of C in the late 70's. I could do it in 5 hours return from my place in NW Calgary return. Always went from the west and returned that way. It was my stress relief. One day I decided to do it from the east and do a traverse. I knew about the exposure. There was no chain. It took longer than 5 hours return and was interesting. Who put the chain in?
    Nice video, thanks.

      I'm not sure who put the chains in to be honest. They have been there for quite a few years though. That's all I know. I've also done yam a few times and it's a nice, enjoyable hike

    Hi, Harlan - another great video! Was it 4.5 hours to the summit and back to the car, or 4.5 hours to the summit? Heading up to Canmore this Saturday and thinking of either Yamnuska or Wasootch as possible hikes. I think Wasootch is a little quicker, but I may be wrong.

      ....That is total hike time. Both peaks are great but if you have never done YAM it sure is fun.

    I experienced this trail yesterday and found the path leading to and out of the chain section slippery. I can't imagine doing this with snow. Can you recommend some good shoes to wear when there's still snow on the ground?

    • @HarlanFox--Scrambles
      @HarlanFox--Scrambles  Před 5 lety +1

      ...Well people do Yamnuska year round and yes it would definitely be trickier with snow on it. Well to answer your question on shoes to wear when there is snow I would say 2 things. A good pair of hiking boots is a good investment. It stabilizes your ankles and protects them from shifting Rock's etc. Also, if there is going to be snow then a pair of MICROSPIKES is s must. There are several different kinds out there, but having something to keep you stable on snow and ice is extremely important. Mountain Equipment Co-OP or Valhalla are a couple of good places to look for these. Hope this helps.

    How did you find the chain section? Is there just one section with chain?

    • @HarlanFox--Scrambles
      @HarlanFox--Scrambles  Před 6 lety

      Backcountry Forward ....There is only the one section yes. I have seen kids go across the chains. Its likely around 5-7 meters of travel or so. It's really not that bad although everyone's perception of risk is different. A fall would not be good however your footings are pretty good. There is really only one spot where it gets really narrow however you are always hanging on so you should be Just fine.

    is the trail easy to follow? what would you rate this as for difficulty? obviously a loop trail?

    • @HarlanFox--Scrambles
      @HarlanFox--Scrambles  Před 8 lety

      +me The trail is easy to follow. Very well worn. The difficulty comes down to your fear of heights. I only say that based on the 5M traverse on the chain section. If you are relatively ok with heights you'll do just fine however a very healthy fear of heights may keep you from getting through it. That being said YES it can be a loop or you can chose to get to the summit by heading around the west end and up to the summit and then coming back down the same way, thus not having the chain section to negotiate. Doing the chain section involves going up the east end to the summit and down the west side of the mountain.
