    I have walked across the Salisbury viaduct many times and still impressed with the structure and the view is great.

    This is a very unique situation as most of this film was taken after the Chessie System stopped using the West Sub past Big Pool and parts of the New Line to Connellsville
    PA. The mix of B&O WM and N&W power is quit interesting. The WM passing under its own bridge at North Branch is awesome. Trains on the WM were reversed on and off of there own tracks from the old Mainline onto the B&O using a connection switch after the 1975 abandonment.

      I wish I could have seen the old days of the b&o and Chessie. My father got to see the last c&o days in Huntington, WV.
      PS - Those who know, use the B&O. The B&O is the way to go!

    The 60’s and 70’s were the best years old railroading! The unique sounding air horns and the Bettendorf Trucks smoking from the oil. Great memories from these old videos.

    Loved the mix of old power in the 60's and 70's. Wish I had been around 50 years sooner --
    Grateful that my grandparents, parents, and uncles knew that little boys should take excursions to the tracks and harbor in a town built by railroads and shipping.
    My grandmother later took the oldest from each family to Europe and central America.
    Memories I'll never forget.

      @@Greatdome99 indeed. My grandmother's both lived to be nearly 100 (dads mom within a month and a half), and my dad is 93 and still driving and practicing law part time -- you'd think after nearly 7 decades of practicing he would be an expert rather than still 'practicing' Lol

    Brings back memories of riding Fall excursion trains on the WM back in the 1960s and '70s from Baltimore to Cumberland. Guess it was only natural the WM would be my favorite local RR since I was born only a few blocks from their tracks in west Baltimore back in 1950.

    The WM was absorbed into the B&O in 1983.

    Lots of F7s. I remember, railfanning back in that era, seeing Southern Railway Fs on freights around Atlanta. Some were FP7s. Amazing how they were still using them - and on heavy trains, at that - not on Locals.

      The majority sound like Nathan M3s and M5s.

      Your close. But they are Leslie S5T's as well. WM was well known for them. They did use M5's but mainly on there F units.
      52% S5T's and 48% M5's

      Read, and have seen on film, that they kept their locomotives clean. And, the track was in great condition - a contrast to The Rock Island of that era. Those Rock Island trains were reelin', rockin and rollin," at least until subsidies fixed their commuter lines. I say this, having just seen a comparable video of The Rock (one of the most interesting of railroad) befire I watched this. WM made good motive power choices. Lots of F units, GP40s and SD40s.
