Fantastic vessel for those conditions. The washing machine in the shower was the BOMB! However, for the rest of us, who like to sail among less icebergs, maybe even in sunshine, a bigger, more accommodating cockpit is a must.
Looked like too much work just to keep it going straight (-ish) for my taste. Perhaps not a concern if the reason you want all that space, is due to having a competent crew of older kids/teens who can sail. HRs are always well built. And their after sales support, in almost all the popular cruising spots in the world, is second to none. So if their design priorities for a boat, match yours, and you've got the scratch... it will no doubt serve you well. I'm worried that all these traditional monohull builders, will end up shooting themselves in the foot, by attempting to (ultimately in vain, no doubt) compete with catamarans for "large, open accommodations." In Scandinavia, I suppose it makes more sense than elsewhere, since cats are just too darned cold and unsuited up there. But in most bigger yachting markets, where the weather is closer to what "normal people" like to be out on the water in, cats are becoming the default option now, at 40-and-up-HR prices. Monos need to offer something different. No matter how wide Frers and Rassy manages to convince themselves they can make their sterns while still retaining some sailability, cats will always beat them as far as Instagrammable accommodation goes.
NIce! -- QUESTION -- For a seven year circumnavigation of the word (for two people), would you prefer this 40C, or the 400 (bigger cockpit) or the Hallberg 44? The 40 seems to be getting lots of praise and has a comparatively wide beam. The 44 is longer with pretty much the same beam. Which would you prefer for a world cruise?
Fantastick. Veldig godt inntrykk av en yacht/skip. Det var en veldig bra test og behaglig og mye info i riktig format.. Dere er flinke til og lage gode nøkterne tester . Skulle gjerne sett litt testing også på lett vind men forstår at dere ikke er herre over værgudene:-)
Interested to know how much more the 44 costs - only 1 head with two master cabins is a non-starter. I'd want the larger galley option plus an en suite head for the aft cabin = 44 foot. Probably not an issue for day/weekend sailors - but not for liveaboard long distance cruising.
This is a SUGGESTION to Hallberg Rassy... Take this same ratio of beam to length (the beam is 34% the length of the hull) and apply it to the 44, 48, the 50 and the 57. Keep the same ratio. Doing that would make the 57 much wider and even the 50 would be another 2.2 feet wider. The ratio on this 40 is perfect. ALSO stop STOP putting those terrible sail drives and go forward with the proper shaft drives. Sail drives are terrible. and make the 40 simply unstable for long term sailing.
