    This review was most lacking and even untrue. As seen in other review videos, the XD+ is capable of standalone emulating heavy PSP (GoW) and Gamecube (Wind Waker) games at near-full to full speed; Linus simply didn't bother to choose and configure the emulators properly. In fact, SNES, N64, PSX, NDS, DC and some PSP already worked full speed (no gamepad lag) on the original XD with skelton's Legacy ROM, which also easily got rid of the Metro launcher and bloatware. As their name rightly implies, the GPD (XD/Win) are portable gaming devices that can do lots on their own and pretty much anything through streaming; say, I even used to play BOTW on the original XD at college Campus, remotely streaming CEMU from my home with Splashtop.
    TL;DR: They're economic, powerful and very versatile portable devices, if you only care to learn how to use them.

    • @JamesWilliams
      @JamesWilliams Před 6 lety +2

      CZcams/Twitch I have to turn down from 1080p/720p60 because it picks those by default and it doesn't always perform well(frame drops) if connecting via a wifi repeater. I don't email on it enough to have a strong opinion, mostly I play something on emulation, watch YT/Twitch/Hulu/Netflix/videos I uploaded on the SD card.

    This is the first review where I've been truly disappointed with Linus. This console is incredibly popular in the emulating community (original XD), it's loved by many people, and a lot of us are considering an upgrade.
    Linus, you should have done your diligence and looked into the product before shooting the video. The "mystery button" is extremely useful, it's for games with touch-screen only input. It maps the hardware to those on screen controls.
    Yours in in Chinese because it's a pre-production model. The real release will probably ship out in local languages.
    Lastly, you didn't even seem to realize that this was a device made for emulation fans. Emulation isn't a side-note, it's the whole reason we're buying this.
    Very disappointed Linus :(

      Z Lin because chances are you are using your phone more than just emulation. and emulating games can eat away the space on your phone easily. not only that but the gpd has a longer batter life while emulating because there wouldn't be a battle of power drainage with other processes

    • @leeeony907
      @leeeony907 Před 6 lety +9

      1. Playing games on a phone can always be interupted by calls, msgs, etc.
      2. It requires the storage on your phone. It eats your battery pretty fast. (This device has 6000mah battery right? Most phone runs higher resolution, and has battery half of this machine's size.)
      3. Paring a controller with a phone is often a pain in the ass, not to mention how hard it is to get it work with various emulators.
      4. How am I supposed to bind my phone on a controller? Eh, scotch tapes?
      5. You won't be able to bring a phone and a controller with you in your pocket anyway.

    When it's an android device it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to test only emulated games on it. Not because emulated games aren't relevant, but because that mostly just ends up being a test of the quality of the emulator moreso than the hardware it runs on. Even a high-end PC can run emulated games poorly depending on the software and settings used.
    The device isn't designed to be an emulator after all but android based, so that seems a bit unfair.
    That input lag there for example ... probably an emulator issue most likely when it's that bad, but there is no way to know if you only test though the emulator.
    Really should have run one or two android-native apps on there.
    It seems pretty interesting though - assuming you are into the sort of games you are likely to find on android. On the cheap for a more casual gamer or a child you probably have a buttload of free/cheap content - plus all the emulator stuff. Comparing to a DS system or a Wii-U or something those options are going to get expensive real fast especially if you have a kid with a short attention span asking for new things to try every week :)
    Pretty ballsy to ship your device with blatantly pirated roms preinstalled though lol. China is crazy :D

    • @AlbedoAtoned
      @AlbedoAtoned Před 6 lety +2

      Emulators are usually the biggest draw for these devices so it makes a lot of sense to show how certain emulators work on it. His issues with lag very much likely were emulation issues, but we don't know which emulators were even on it other than that it was using a build of Mupen64Plus AE, but we don't even know how old the build of it was. The fact his device came full of emulators and roms suggests that these emulators could be older versions with bugs that were patched.
      Emulation is a tricky beast sometimes. It's not just how well it can run a game, but also how accurately and when it comes to lower power devices, sometimes you have to make sacrifices to one to achieve the other. Most of the time, these sacrifices aren't too bad, maybe a sound or visual glitch occurs, but other times that could cause big issues such as gamebreaking bugs, visual issues that prevent you from progressing, or even crashes. In the past, emulators were often made to get certain games running, and perhaps running well, but the accuracy suffered. N64 emulation is one of the bigger cases of this. And yeah, if you didn't set your settings just right, many games wouldn't work. Modern emulators tend to focus on accuracy, though with HLE to help ease the burden. The idea being that even if you can't emulate a certain popular game yet, someday you could, hardware is progressing at a fast rate so excessive hacks intended to get certain games running now end up holding back the emulator. As mentioned, n64 emulation was this way. Now that actual progress is being made, many games are not only looking better, but they actually are running whereas before many of them just didn't work.
      The better emulators tend to be so well known and tested that what people are looking for are things like "how well can this device run gamecube games, psp?", "Can it run dreamcast or wii games?". While none of these emulators are perfect, they are generally known for being very good. While a game not running well COULD be due to the emulator, chances are it's because the device is not powerful enough. Modern emulation works to become more accurate, and while this can rarely help with performance, the general trend is actually to become more demanding. So you might have to turn down or off some settings or use speedhacks, but this often comes at the cost of glitches. An example is that the Higan, a cycle accurate emulator mainly used for snes emulation requires a beefy system. Byuu the dev has stated that perfect snes emulation requires a 3Ghz clock speed. Then you have an emulator such as Zsnes on the other end which used a lot of speedhacks in order to get games running on pretty much any computer back in the day. At the time, this meant that the games that had the speedhacks looked and ran mostly fine, but if they hadn't been dealt with they had all sorts of obscure bugs.
      I guarantee you that native android games are not really on the minds of people buying this. No offense, but few android games even come to mind that stand out to me personally. I've played a few games on it that were suggested and most just didn't strike my fancy like the things I could play on PC or on some console or handheld and few accepted anything but touchscreen and gyroscope controls. And since so many people user lower power phones, most games are not very demanding, so if android gaming is your thing, chances are this will run them just fine. The part you might find unsatisfactory though is that the GPD line of products don't really seem like good ways to play games that rely on touchscreen or gyroscope controls.
      Now, if this was the GPD Win 2, then people would be less concerned with emulators. When the GPD win came out, most that just wanted emulators got the GPD XD, whereas those that wanted to play native PC games wanted to see how well the gpd win ran windows games. And since the hardware on the GPD win and GPD XD were comparable, for emulation it didn't matter too much. Now that the GPD XD+ and GPD WIn 2 are coming out, similar events are happening. People are interested in what avenues can be opened up in regards to emulators and for the GPD Win 2, what games it can play that the first one couldn't, and how it improves the games the first GPD win could run.

They also have a GPD win and win2, the latter of which runs the latest gen intel skylake M3 cpu, and is able to run titles like GTA5, Fallout4, etc... it has a M.2 SSD, 8GB LPDDR3... its nice... They have other devices too... Linus is not only way out of the freaking loop on this tech, and tech in general... But he can't even be bothered to research a company OR their product line up before making a pathetic attempt at a review these days... damn... Getting pretty shitty. The reason for the imput lag is that the CPU has to emulate the instructions from the Nintendo 64 to ARM instructions in real time, which causes a few milliseconds delay.

    In spite of Linus being stupid, I wholeheartedly recommend this system. I've been using the XD for over a year now and it's flawless.
    Plays anything from DOS and Atari, to Genesis and SNES, to N64 and PS1, to PSP and DS flawlessly. It's also a full Android system, so you can play all your favourite Android games via the included touch screen or the "Map joystick" button (which is the one Linus couldn't figure out and said it didn't work).
    It also DOES play Gamecube and Wii titles via Dolphin..... just at 7fps >.> So not really an option. The battery life is amazing as well. I get anywhere between 8-12 hours of game time from it. And again that's GAME time, not idle.
    If you're at all interested in an amazing portable emulation device, I implore you. PLEASE pick this up. You won't regret it!

  • @__________________________Fred

    Get good emulators and change the settings and it runs just about everything just fine with no input lag. Gotta learn how to use the emulators and how to use the files in order to run them. Connect it to your pc and drop roms in the correct folders and download a bios if needed. If you do the wrong thing you just download any rom on the internet and when you do the right thing you only download the games that you already own for your old gameboy for example. This is THE handheld console in the circle of connoisseurs.

      David Allen the 3ds has a left and right joystick? I don't think it does??? And the most obvious proof that it isn't a rip off is that it's lacking that terrible friction bottom touch display and instead uses a capacitive touch display on its main display

    • @DaveLovesVids
      @DaveLovesVids Před 6 lety

      If you have owned one you'd be able to see how much they took directly from the 3DS despite hardware changes.

    • @airish7384
      @airish7384 Před 6 lety +1

      David Allen I have a 2ds and XD, yeah I do see similarities but you can only reinvent the wheel (clamshell hand held) so many times before it becomes cumbersome, unattractive, and impractical. I think most companies don't try making a clamshell handheld in fear of being called a "DS knockoff" because of how well known the DS is. The vision and core philosophy of the XD is different than that of the DS, that's more than enough reason to say this is not a rip off of the DS. GPD isn't trying to provide a DS experience, they are creating a better emulator and android gaming experience for those who are already heavily invested in the community and to welcome newcomers to the emulation community with a minimalistic, yet essential design that won't scare away many consumers.

    Well one thing I can say from my experience with the original Gpd XD the emulators that they include with the units tend to run like shit. To get the most out of the device you need to install your own from the play store. But Gpd shot themselves in the foot by sending Linus a Chinese review unit with no play store.

      not talking about the clamshell desing only there are some point of the shell that are completely same as 3ds xl shell design to the point that the dampeners that are meant to make the lid not close down hard are on the same place and look the same.

    • @jamesalexander5559
      @jamesalexander5559 Před 6 lety +8

      I'm pretty sure they were talking about the clamshell design when they mentioned the "chassis". I guess Nintendo didn't or couldn't patent parts of the 3DS design that look similar here due to it being too general. Plus as others have mentioned GPD is a Chinese company.
      Anyways, I don't see any problem with GPD using a 3DS like design when clamshell handhelds are a dime a dozen and the design doesn't appear to be patented. I do have a problem with the roms though and breaking the GPL license of some emulators it uses.
