      Well, many kill shelters actually have no problem euthanizing, even when they have space. One I often foster dogs from in NM has a director famous for saying 'I'm not running a hotel'. Really depends on the shelter. But yeah... until there are real consequences for breeding and spay and neuter legislation, the situation is dire, unfair and inexcusable. Humans are incredibly selfish.

    I had a very similar situation. Found a GSD at a county shelter (high kill) who was super friendly. However, she had mange and a hernia and was already scheduled to be euthanized the next day. I spent the day trying to convince them to let me adopt her. Went back the next day to make sure they did not do the eu-deed. Finally on my 3rd trip, they decided to let me keep her. Two days later their vet fixed her up, including the hernia. Two days after she went home with me. Had her for 11 years.

Breeders don't. I saw on Instagram one day where Ikea in Italy open their doors to stray dogs for the winter and people who were shopping at IKEA decided to adopt dogs there while they also shop to buy their furniture. I wish large stores across the nation such as big chain grocery stores would do an adoption event once a month. There are so many people who go grocery shopping with their families who are thinking about adoption. It would be a one stop shop where families can shop for groceries and also adopt a pet. This would help relieve many animal shelters as well as reduce stray dogs roaming around in neighborhoods. I remember when I was little my dad took me to K-Mart and there would always be someone who brought kittens there for free and that’s how we got our first pet. If Ikea can do this is in Italy, local stores could do the same to help many animals needing a home, but I don’t think stores in America would?!

      I think one of the issues doing this in America is the lawsuits. Big stores won't have untrained animals (especially dogs) in them for fear of getting sued. Small businesses such as independent pet stores may be more likely. I think if you live someplace with good weather, you may be able to organize an outdoor adoption event in an area of a grocery store parking lot.

      Impulse adopting is not good, if people want to adopt they can make an effort to do so. You shouldn’t be able to get a dog while you are buying a carton of milk. Dogs are a big life changing decision, hence why so many are GIVEN UP. People don’t know how much work it is. They think it’s like the 5 second videos in tic tok or the well trained dogs that are in the movies. They are also expensive, there are a lot of factors you need to consider before getting an animal. (This is coming from someone who is a dog lover and dog owner. My life changed significantly since having a dog, and I am happy for it. But for some people the changes could be too much. Potty training, going for walks, going out to play, finding someone to watch your dog while you go out of town or finding a way to also take your dog. Feeding, buying toys etc. all this costs time and money. As I said I am more than happy to do this and more. If my dog can’t go with me somewhere then I’m not going, I haven’t seen a movie at the movie theater in 5 years. My dog makes me happy. But do not assume others think this way.)

    Thank you for not bashing the shelter. I used to volunteer at a no kill shelter close by and believe me, Riv county shelter is doing the best they can considering the situation. They are the main animal control for the ENTIRE Riverside county, which is huge, since many smaller shelters like blythe and hemet have closed down during to low adoption rates. Riv reaches out to nearby rescue organizations and fosters basically begging to take their dogs when its close to their euthanasia dates. Being the county shelter, they have to abide by laws and put them down. If you talk to any worker there you can immediately tell that they are truly animal lovers and doing what they can to help. Its just an unfortunate situation.
    Ps. PLEASE FOSTER if you can’t adopt ❤❤

    I adopted a rescue 7 weeks ago. He was removed from a home with 9 other dogs. They were all kept in cages with no socialization. He was afraid of life - people, traffic, noises, tv, etc...It was incredibly difficult walk him because any noise would send him into a panic and having a 90 pound dog drag you home is tough. 7 weeks later and he's made so much progress. He's adjusted to traffic, he has even allowed some people he's met frequently to pet him, and he's just the sweetest thing. No separation anxiety, no chewing, walks well on leash, no fear of storms which was a surprise. He's blossomed into such a wonderful sweet boy with time and patience. He's so gentle with our cat too :)

    I volunteered at this shelter and they swore they were not high kill. Only animals in severe distress, medical distress cases or super aggressive were put down. I guess things have changed there. They were a great organization to volunteer for and people there cared lots. I volunteered in socializing, grooming, and pulling dogs for meet and greets guiding the process to ensure a match. I miss it. I know they have when severly overcrowded 20 adoption days or even free adoptions "clear the shelters" events they are called just to try to save them all. It's cheap to adopt there so these make it even more an incentive to adopt. Thanks for getting her! Always look out for adoptions guys!

I was in shock at first but sprung into action to educate myself and advocate for my dog. I helped him build confidence and I'm so proud of how far he's come. There are so many resources that are inexpensive or free to help. I would say aside from raising children, this has been the most rewarding experience.

He was listed as food aggressive, not good with kids, can’t be left alone, ongoing medical treatment and having a tendency to run away. 7 years later he’s the most best and well behaved dog I could of ever asked for. Very friendly with everyone - I’ll definitely adopt again. Just because they have issues at the time, remember those dogs are probably terrified and been past around so they probably don’t have a clue what’s going on but that’s not how they will always be for the rest of their life :)

    I believe that there is absolutely no such thing as a "reputable breeder"... there are so many different breeds of dogs that need homes(at all ages as well). I also hear a lot about how shelter dogs "have a temper"... how would you feel if you got abandoned by your family and shoved in a cage?? Dogs do not even understand what is going on other than the fact that the people they love gave up on them. It takes patience, commitment, and time which can also be said about raising a puppy- so would you rather save a life or carry on with profitting breeders that use dog's bodies/babies for their bills? Everone is entitled to their own opinions, but honestly I do not think I can trust anyone that is vain and dense enough to choose the second option. I loved your video so much Weylie- thank you for using your platform like this

    • @TheAuthor8808
      @TheAuthor8808 Před 2 měsíci +12

      The thing with reputable breeders is that those have a higher chance of not ending up in a shelter or pound. They are mircochipped with the breeders information so if the owner can’t take them anymore or something happens to the current owner the breeder can take them back.
      People choose to buy a dog from a breeder for temperament, lifestyle and they know exactly what they are getting into. People who adopt shelter dogs are *hopefully* willing to put in the time and energy for a dog with unknown behavior history and train them. Otherwise a dog that is trained, housebroken and is already desensitized, especially around kids is more likely to come from a breeder. Also health issues can be mitigated somewhat from purebred dogs while shelter dogs you have no idea the health history.
      There is nothing wrong with anyone doing any of these things as long as they are able to do so responsibly.

    • @starcatcher3691
      @starcatcher3691 Před měsícem

      I totally agree with you! We could solve this so easily IF we STOP BUYING dogs, even just for a few years! Get all of the needy dogs adopted and then go from there. But we can't seem to be responsible or caring enough. Two educated family members BOUGHT big dogs and I am very disappointed in them. It is a selfish act.

    • @starcatcher3691
      @starcatcher3691 Před měsícem

      @@TheAuthor8808 I am sorry, I do not think this is true. One rescuer said the worst dog parents BUY their animals! And they end up in the shelters all of the time. BS on the temperament excuse as well. Rescues get to know the dogs and know the temperament to help you choose an appropriate dog. I have adopted ONLY rescues and there is nothing wrong with them! I had a little poodle who was abandoned on the street. When we first met her she growled fierce but she stopped once she realized she was safe. She had "trauma" but she ended up being an angel. It didn't permanently damage her. I have an adopted dog now who was a downtown LA homeless person's pet. She lived in a van with feces and urine and her hair grew out long and tangled. She lived this way for years. She is with me now and is a very good girl now despite all of the trauma. Breeders don't necessarily create better dogs, that is a false assumption. YES there is something vERY wrong with breeding dogs into the world when so many good dogs need homes. It's selfish and causes suffering to dogs as a whole. People who truly care about dogs would never do that. Stop the lies, please.

    • @bedheadacademic

    • @TheAuthor8808
      @TheAuthor8808 Před 27 dny

      @@starcatcher3691 When you pay shelter or adoption fees or fees of any kind, that is called a transaction. Even when you are rescuing or adopting, the moment they ask for payment or money, you buy that animal.
      Breeders create better dogs, and that is the whole point of breeding. The entire argument would be mute if any dog could do any job. Golden retrievers are not naturally aggressive like a Cane Corse might be. A chihuahua does not have enough nose receptors to smell out cancer cells like labradors and border collies can. No rancher will use a poodle to herd 1200-2000lb cattle across the American plains. All dogs have a job. Some dogs are better at that job than others.
      Dog breeds are like computers. If you want to play heavy CPU processing games, you get a gaming PC, not a Chrome book, and vice versa.
      Shaming people for not adopting or rescuing because they do not want to adopt or rescue is unfair and dumb. You have to remember that people are dumb and only think about things so far. Rarely does someone take the time to research an animal; they want to see if it will fit their lifestyle before going to a shelter and just picking up an animal. Most people don't want an animal with unknown history or little training so they'll go to a breeder where they'll learn everything and can even pay extra for that animal to come trained.

    We adopted a dog from a killing station (they're very rare in EU but they exist) and this was the most insane dog I ever met. She would not let you touch her at all or she'll probably bite you. She would defend resources like crazy and she couldn't stop peeing inside.
    We had her for 10 years and we loved her a lot. Sure she made some improvements but some things we could never change. The people at the shelter told us about her life as a street dog in Spain and then she got adopted but she already defended her resources. The new owners staring beating her to make her stop but it only got worse so they gave her back to the shelter. She never got adopted again and she was very aggressive in the shelter environment so they made the decision to give her to the killer station. We actually wanted to get a "normal" shelter dog but my Mom just couldn't leave her there so we took her instead. It was 10 crazy years, in the beginning she bit all of us but she started to trust us more and more. When I was a teenager we sat in the garden and I read stories to her because she didn't like to be touched still.
    She died of old age in 2015. RIP my little girl. I'm so happy you could live with us.

    Not being vegan doesn't mean you're a bad person & that you cannot love animals! Just nonsense. Farmers have tons of pets. Glad Luna found a home!

    Luna is so precious and that's great that you were instrumental in saving her and helping to find a "paw-fect" new home for her.
    Good for you ,for doing what you do, for all those precious fur friends. We rescued our beautiful boy 'Chevy ' three plus years ago from a shelter and he has enriched our family's life a thousand times over as our newest family member. The world has never been a perfect place but having a dog or pets in a home for some of us is pretty close to perfect! 🐾☮🐾

    She's beautiful.🤩 We have a white German Shepard and we love her to bits. Mine loves to lay on me or sit on me all the time lol. They truly are great dogs. They say dogs don't smile but I say bologna, mine smile all the time, hehe. Thank you for saving her life. May your friend and her new fur baby, have many happy years together. Congrats to the new dog parent 😁. Such a good girl already. Lovely name for a lovely girl.
