The FA/Salary Cap era has made it a real balancing act in keeping a competitive roster, which is why having a great GM is almost more important than having a great coach for having a consistent winner. You have to analyze the roster constantly. Make decisions on who to keep, who to let go, and when you do let players go, have a plan on how to replace them.
Course, maybe you don't want to be a consistent winner, when the best players tend to be at the top of the draft. Also, sometimes you know it is time and make the bold move to mortgage the future for a Super Bowl run, like the Rams did a couple of years ago.
Course, if you are fortunate enough to luck into having Tom Brady on your team (or Patrick Mahomes), then you are likely to be a perennial contender no matter what the roster looks like.

Agree. See the Baltimore Ravens organization. They have done the same things consistently for decades. While fans don’t think of the Ravens as dynastic, and they aren’t close. But they have been consistent winners for years. The last 25 seasons the Baltimore Ravens have had only 5 losing seasons.
As a fan of the Ravens, i will attest that every losing season the team was consistently competitive, even the few occasions that they had double digit losses.
They lost their starting quarterback for the season.
The Steelers also have won consistently.
However, the Ravens standard has moved into a new era.
Fans don’t understand that the two seasons Lamar was injured the Ravens were at the top of the conference.
IMO The Baltimore Ravens are the model of consistency, and have shown the ability to adapt and remain true to its brand and culture.
The team has always valued their draft picks, and have done well with player development. Especially in the middle ro late rounds. Some guys don’t resign and go on to greener pastures, which is understandable, but somehow year after year the Ravens develop guys and when those mid round prospects have developed into good NFL players and the Ravens can’t resign, they already have a player that is in the wings.
      Matt Judon
      Z’Darius Smith
      Darren Waller
      Mid to late round gems.
      so many others
On this team. Guys who’ve played their way to bigger contracts.
      Some will leave.
Now the Ravens have missed on some guys, and EDC likes gambling on injured talents.
But they have always excelled at mid to late round guys and undrafted free agents.
      The culture is unmatched.
I am hopeful that this version with Lamar can get #3 for the organization.
Through all the pivots in the game of football the last 25 years. The Ravens have been winning 80% of the time and competitive 100% of the time.

Give that OC full control of the offense, don’t let Tomlin micromanage the offense whatsoever and let him know he’s on the hot seat if he doesn’t get his shit together. Then in the off-season invest in one high quality IOL and draft a tackle in the first two rounds. If a good QB ends up on the trade block and isn’t absurdly expensive go grab him, or if one of the qbs in the draft falls within five picks of their slot, trade up. Otherwise keep Pickett, give him a shot with a real OC and have a contending roster ready to trade up in the 2025 when less teams will be looking for a qb.

Everything that the typical team has to deal with in today's NFL, their opponents have to as well. It was more possible to have a stacked roster before the salary cap, but then you had to play against and beat teams that had stacked rosters. Build the defense young, hungry, and cheap, cheap being the key, and accept whatever happens there. Keeping your QB healthy and efficient is 90%+ of the battle. We are undervaluing how much luck plays a role in determining who wins the super bowl. The best case scenario for a team is they might have a 30% chance of winning the super bowl, and that's only if they have a super roster and the rest of the league isn't good. You have to win like 3-4 games in a row against the best teams in the nfl in order to win the super bowl. Even if you're the best team in the league and have like a 66% chance of winning each game (which is insanely high) on average and you're the #1 seed, you have like a 28% chance of winning the super bowl. Almost 3/4 times a team who isn't as good as you will win it all in that scenario. Winning the super bowl isn't about being the best team for 1 year, it's about being good enough to compete for enough years that eventually the stars will align and you'll win a few times.

The NFL salary cap is 30 years in. And it’s done precisely what it’s supposed to do. A more level playing field for every team. Depth is more important than ever. You can’t lose a star player to injury, and not have another one that can step up and do the job. This is why the Patriots were what they were for so long (no it wasn’t cheating). Instead of putting your whole season on the backs of a few premiere players, you need a full roster of solid “football smart” hard working guys that play mistake free football. Also, the Bucs got Tom when they already had a loaded team, and they only competed for a superbowl for two years before regressing. Although you didn't explicitly mention the Eagles in the video, since Hurts was on the thumbnail I do want to give a few words on them. This is the last year before Hurts' massive extension comes in, but Howie Roseman was able to tinker around and make the first few years of it not as bad as you'd expect. Obviously we've got our 1-2 receiver punch with AJ and DeVonta, the former Howie re-signed immediately upon getting him and the latter will be in extension talks very soon. As for our offensive line, which has widely been regarded the best in the league, you hear every year about whether or not Jason Kelce will ultimately call it a career, and he literally said that losing the Super Bowl played a factor in his decision to return. Lane Johnson you feel like is not much longer for the league either, and he's been a big deal for us. We'll be left wondering if pieces like Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen and Jack Driscoll can take over adequately.
The biggest issue right now, if you haven't already figured out, is that our secondary is practically nonexistent. We had all the pieces last year and basically none this time around without CJGJ, Maddox, TJ Edwards, etcetera. Although there are plenty of pieces Howie deserves praise for being able to get as of late, his drafting secondary pieces has left something to be desired. Regardless of whether they get it together and we do in fact win it all this year or not, I'm hoping that Howie takes some defensive pieces early on, but we're not a franchise known for getting linebackers early. We'll see just what good Darius Leonard can do for us.
And it doesn't help that people are not exactly liking the new coordinators. Reuben Frank, our longtime Eagles writer, has put out multiple pieces defending the OC, telling us what we've been getting wrong there and telling us we should stop firing Brian Johnson because even with the questionable playcalls, we're still one of the better offenses in the league, and you wouldn't know that without looking it up. As for Sean Desai, one minute Eagles Twitter will say he's no better than Jonathan Gannon, the next they'll say he's better than Gannon ever was. He's tried to get what he can out of the constantly rotating talent he's had, and it hasn't always worked out.
Even though the roster turnover will have to be fluctuating frequently, with someone like Jalen Hurts manning this team, and a creative GM like Howie Roseman who has gotten more aggressive than ever as of late, I do believe that Hurts will get his redemption before all is said and done. There's too much talent on this team not to.

I think Kirk Cousins is a guy I would keep my eyes on if I were the Steelers, I think they are a bit more than just a quarterback away but not much, I think a guy like Cousins would immensely elevate the play of Pickens, Johnson, Friarmueth.
That being said I don't think Kenny is the answer, however I do hate the direction the league has gone in terms of having patience developing a franchise quarterback, with the way the league works now and wanting to win on cheap deals at QB if it doesn't work right away you just cast a guy like a Zach Wilson or a Pickett away after 2-3 years. So many legends of the game from Bradshaw, to Geno Smith didn't succeed to the standard they would go into this quick.
But also Pickett just doesn't seem to be it, I think going with Kirk Cousins in the off-season and try to lure him to Pittsburgh is the way to go.

As for the Steelers, they have all the talent there. All have proven it multiple times, the ability to win under pressure. I'd take that anyway over most other teams. WhateverTF happened against the Cardinals, THEY HAVE to figure that out. Kenny going down, sucked. I don't worry about his ability to throw accurately, I worry not about the durability at this point. This O Line has been ATROCIOUS by the Pitt standard for fout year's now!

I’m confused. Doesn’t 1 out of 32 teams win every year? Same as 20 years ago? How is it impossible to win?

In addition to a salary cap, there should be an individual salary cap.

Steelers fan. Trubisky's contract is up this year. Mitch and Mason Rudolph will be gone. Steelers will probably look at drafting a later round QB and signing a vet backup to compete with Pickett. I still believe in Pickett. Canada being gone is great, but coaching is still a big issue. We are no longer in a Manning, Brady, Brees league. Having a consistent game manager is more than ok as long as other key pieces are in place.

As a Steelers fan, Kenny deserves as much blame as Matt Canada. He does miss some very rudimentary NFL balls and is closer to mediocre than elite. If I were Khan, I would sign kirk/fields or draft a QB in a loaded class. After last years incredible offseason, I believe in the Khan artist and have all the faith that he’ll swindle us into another dynasty 💪

Buffalo couldn'tve won that jet game. They needed nothing on the jets offense to win. Healthy bills couldn't get it done even vs an unprepared jet team.

Steelers fan here: you let Kenny play his third season next year. If it doesn’t work out, you either draft a QB in 2025 or wait until 2026 when you can trade up for Manning.

if you wait til 26 you may not have to trade up at all lmfao

At this point you are better off just drafting a QB every 5 years.

Salaries are out of control, along with referring, plus they let politics into the game. The NFL is doomed unless changes get made.

I figured out the truth of this video a long time ago, which begs the question: how the hell did the Patriots manage to sustain their success for close to 20 years?
