    I have an LP60. I've had it for about ten months and I love it. I hooked it up to a simple little set of bookshelf speakers we've had in the family for at least 7 or 8 years. It's great for someone like me who's only been actively collecting for about a year, and only has about 150 records, including 45s.

    For the ATLP60, you actually can replace the "needle" or stylus as it's called. You cannot replace the cartridge however. The stylus comes right out and can be upgraded to a better one.

    • @hellfried68
      @hellfried68 Před 8 lety +1

      I have been using the ATLP60USB for the past 6 weeks. Read a lot of negative reviews about it too. Some mention that it will completely destroy your records. Any truth to that? Also what would be considered an upgrade to the existing needle? What models of stylus would fit it?

    • @jondubb35
      @jondubb35 Před 8 lety +1

      +Kar Nim Leong it won't completely destroy your records, but it is definitely a beginners or casual listeners model. If you really want the better sound, I would upgrade when you get the opportunity. Look for a p-mount replacement stylus if you want to change the needle. The only problem I foresee is the LP60s inability to adjust the tracking force which means you should probably only replace the stylus with the stock one. If you do, you'll need to get a "p-mount" stylus.

    To be clear (because no one seems to ever mention this), ANY turntable with a built-in pre-amp or a turntable going through a external pre-amp (boosting the signal to line level) can be plugged into a computer ...no USB needed. You'd just plug into the line-in or "microphone" input. All you need is the right cable (2 RCA to stereo eighth inch). You can then record on your computer using whatever; Audacity for example. The ONLY difference here (besides the connection) is that instead of the turnbable doing the Analog to Digital conversion, your computer is doing the Analog to Digital conversion.

A couple other benefits to the orbits uturn special - it has a base with 3 rubber feet to limit vibration... It has an acrylic platter which eliminates the need for a slip mat.. it's made in the USA and the company has legendary customer service. Also, the company that provides the motor for the uturn is the same company that provides them for VPI turntables...VPI makes very high end TTs.

I have a receiver &a speakers compounds have been in storage for 15 years but they worked when I set em up. I bought the LP60 and it over deliverers for it's price point. So I was off, I retrieved my few remaining records from the parents house, dropped the needle on Dark Side and i was hooked. Since then I have become a fixture at the record stores in town. I watch the VC channels and saved for an upgrade. Now I am playing my records on a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Esprit. I am gobsmacked at the quality of sound. rather invest in some vintage turntables for example the Technics SL line. The modern Pro Ject ones are like an iPhone - design is great but you don't get anything else. No automatic tonearm-returning, you have to manually change the belt for some Pro-Ject models (sometimes it forces you to dismount the entire turntable), as mentioned no tonearm hight adjustment, no precize anti-skate etc. All that can be found on turntables from the late 1970es up to mid 1980es. A brand new SL-3210 will cost you around 200 bugs.

    Best option is to visit every Salvation Army/Goodwill/Pawn shop/ Etc in your area, try to score a vintage turntable with a magnetic cartridge on the low. Theyll most likely be sold in As is condition which will lead to being an incredibly cheap price. Will often just need a new belt, and/or needle. I scored a 1978 BSR Quanta for only $10 that has an arm very similar to the LP120. Worked fine until I sold it.

      In my opinion, the video should've been much longer precisely to include more details. Specifying what cartridge each record player has is not a minor detail especially when it comes to "justifying" the price considering that the ortofon 2m red is between 100 to 150 USD.
      I do think that this is a great video in spite of that!

      2M red expensive? It's by far not a bad cart but compared to a 2M blue it fails. Hiss, distortion (pretty rare tho)...Not my choice. I would go for the 2M silver or bronze.

    The Audio Technica LP120 is excellent. Im really pleased with mine; it sounds great and the build quality is superb. It cost £220 (about $300) from an independent hi-fi shop here in the UK which was strangely cheaper than amazon. The only thing I did find was the tracking weight set up was fiddly (but that might just have been me!); so I did buy a cheap tracking weight scale online to get the precise 2 gram.

    You DON'T need the USB version of the LP-60 (or any turntable for that matter) to connect to a computer. This turntable and most other new turntables output at line level (they have a built-in preamp). This means you can, with simple adapter cable, plug into the mic/line input of your computer.

    Audio Technica LP-60: The stylus (needle) can be replaced, and should be every thousand hours or less. The cartridge can't be swapped with a different type. I assume that's what you probably meant, but it was a little fuzzy. You COULD replace a damaged cartridge with the same type, but probably not worth the money or effort. Connect the non-USB type (as with any line out, pre-amplified turntable) to a computer with a female RCA to 3.5 mil. plug (headphone type) cable, or a female RCA coupler to male RCA to 3.5 mil., OR 3.5 mil. from your receiver's headphone jack to 3.5 mil. into the computers audio input for a few dollars. Connect any pre-amplified audio source that has RCA outputs or a headphone jack to your computer this way (external turntable pre-amp, tape deck, shortwave radio, junk Crosley with the odd and kind of rare headphone jack, Walkman, old crap General Electric boombox, etc.). Download Audacity recording software for free. The audio will still play through your computer even without Audacity.

    I've had a Audio Technical PL-120 for about a decade and at the time it was one of the best turntables that was available at that particular time it wasn't cheap either it when for about $450 or so online and also if you could fine one in the store it when for a very similar price them too. It is an excellent turntable close in some ways to what a small radio station might use because of the adjustments that you can do it is also designed to be used for DJ work as well.

    Thinking about the debut carbon firstly My choice for a beginner was a NAD C556 (which is kind a clone of a rega). It cames out with a audiotechnica AT 95 E or something closed I don't remember now because I quickly updated it to a ortofon 2m red. And yeah! Already very satisfied, this update made me have a soundgasm. I was felling quite suspicious about the effect of passing to this cartridge but I absolutely don't regret. Very good cartridge especially with the actual prices on markets (got a new one for 62 euros). Trying to do my best to write a non-dirty English.
    Nice Vidéo by the way

  • @adriandotsmall
    @adriandotsmall Před 8 lety

    Nice video. However, for beginners, it might be helpful to talk about whether each turntable is manual, has auto return, or is fully automatic. I have the Pro-ject debut carbon 2 (it's manual) - i got the turntable with the speed control (45 - 33) built in. I think some of the other pro-ject turntables might need the belt changing to play at different speeds, which might be important for beginners to know. Similar to other comments - the pro-ject turntables come with an Ortofon cartridge meaning they will cost more. There are advantages to not having a built in pre-amp on your turntable.

  • @MikeVanDalen1996
    @MikeVanDalen1996 Před 8 lety

    instead of the project essential 2 I would recommend a second hand technics 1200mk2 or a dual 1229
    "best sounding" does also depend a lot on the needle. and if you wanna go into vibrations of a turntable and get nitpicky than talk about the magnitization of the motor influencing the needle.
