Hey! Love to see you getting more into Monsta X. My comment is in two parts, first one is just some more info about the group as a whole, and the other one is about Wonho and what happened
*So for a bit of additional info:*
    - The official colors aren't official, but they are coming from the albums who really built the fandom; the Lost, Guilty and Beautiful Trilogy. These three albums had as themes a lot of society issues that are a bit of a "no talk" in South Korea (the abusive power of authority, poverty, lgbtq+, etc...), the hardship of life, and finding your place your own community. I advise you to watch in order their MVs *All In, Fighter* and *Beautiful* if you're interested.
    - In 2017, they really got popular in South Korea, they are the one who popularized darker and sexier themes in Kpop, and their stylist are the reason we started to see chokers, open back suits, body chains and harness appearing.
They also popularized what is called "noise music" (what you can hear with groups like Stray Kids or Ateez i.e).
Today it's kinda of the norm, but back then they even got called out by people who told them that they would never be popular because this music isn't appealing, to what they answered that they tried to change a bit their style in the past and didn't enjoy it, so if they had to get popular, it would be with their own music color. Spoiler; they made it.
    - They are also very popular within other idols and actors, rookies are often naming them as their role models.
They are recognized as an incredibly respectful people, who don't look down on anyone. They are super open minded, showed support without any hesitations and uncountable times to the LGBTQ+ community, to BLM...
*Now I dunno if you're gonna get more into them, but as I said above, I kinda want to give you more info concerning Wonho cause I feel like it's a huge part of Monsta X's history but it's definitely not something you're going to find into guides.*
It's really long tho, so if you're not interested I understand ^^
In 2019, Monsta X started receiving a bunch of cyberbullying, antis were creating fake videos and sharing out of context clips while making their own interpretation, and it was a whole lot of it. They wanted Monsta X to be destroyed, not just disband, but truly ruin them and ruin any chances for them to start anew in the future. They weren't even hiding it; they were openly saying it that it was fake on different social media.
It was legit an army of antis and haters, and like... I've been in the kpop world for a long time, I saw as many random dramas as I saw legit tragedies, but I truly never saw such a strong hate for a group that was innocent.
Following months of cyberbullying, and after Shownu got photoshoped into compromising pictures and it being shared a whole lot online, Wonho, got framed by a former friend he helped in the past, and her fake girlfriend (they "got together" with the sole purpose of taking Monsta X down and very quickly broke up after the whole stuff was over).
This girl is very well known in the kpop industry, she's a failed kpop trainee from an political family, and she destroyed multiple idols' reputation in the past. She went to prison multiple times, but always got away with it because of the influence of her family.
They accused Wonho of stealing money (and furniture???) from his former friend, and shared super wacky text messages between Wonho's lawyer and his former friend's lawyer. It didn't went further because it was obviously fake, but it actually did some damage to Wonho's reputation.
A few weeks later, they probably decided that it wasn't going fast enough because they accused Wonho of doing and trying to sell dr*gs 10 years ago (which is very illegal btw), going to juvenile and much more. In South Korea, real or not, accusations can ruin a life.
South Korean fans stopped their public support and very few Korean fans kept fighting for MX and for Wonho.
I believe we last saw Wonho with Monsta X in October 2019, during an award show? Where they all appeared on camera to be exhausted, but Wonho especially was looking very bad, clearly on the verge of crying. A few hours after the show, we were informed that Wonho had disappeared from Monsta X's dorm, that the members didn't know where he was, and that the agency were trying to get in contact with him.
When they got a hold of him, he apparently told by phone to the agency his desire to break his contract.
He explained to us way after everything was over that he thought that if he left the group, it would stop the rumors and accusations against MX as whole and that they would focus on him only.
Wonho used to take a huge pride into calling himself "the guardian of Monsta X and Monbebe"
It was a terribly heartbreaking moment. International fan support was stronger than ever, we made new records, raised thousands of dollars just to be heard, his name was trending on twitter every single day for months, with tweets full of support. A bunch of other fandoms helped too. But none of the tweets were in Korean. It didn't matter that his face was on billboards, in metro stations, on freaking bus, we, as international fans, had no impact.
Monsta X have always been close to each other, and (still today) Wonho is truly one of the most lovable idol and person I have ever seen. He is really devoted and gentle, he truly loves his members and they truly love him deeply. Seeing six of them going on stage and doing their best while on the verge of crying... for us fans it was so painful, but it was probably way worse for them.
The drugs accusation got him investigated. As I wrote above, drugs (and I'm talking marijuana, not even hard drugs) are incredibly illegal in South Korea, and if you even just smoke it, 10 years after that you can still take multiple years in prison.
But Wonho totally complied with the investigations and got cleared of every single charges, while most of the accusations weren't even investigated because of how ridiculous and wacky they were. But honestly, the damage was done.
Monsta X had started to get treated worst than junior kpop groups are, despite being seniors. For us it doesn't mean anything, but again, in South Korea, reputation is everything. They had to start from zero again, despite *everything* from the rumors to the accusations being fake.
They were exhausted, under so much stress and pressure, it was the worst era in the history of the group.
And just like that, it very slowly calmed down.
Wonho debuted solo a few months after everything was cleared and he is doing better everyday. His very first song after he came back, Losing You, that you heard in this video, was fully in English, dedicated to his international fans. We felt completely useless during the whole things, but at least we got confirmation by his relatives that he saw everything, and that's what apparently gave him the strength to keep going during the whole investigation, and to come back when things calmed down.
The song was just an other confirmation. He even named his new fandom after the # that international fans used to make trend for him on twitter, and most of the songs he released so far are openly for and in support of his fans.
For a lot of Monbebes, it's still a very painful story, I believe that those who saw it happening don't even talk about it anymore, and with MX and Wonho's popularity rising, this story it's getting drowned in the new fans.
There are almost no archives of this story but I really think it's important for it not to be forgotten, it's part of Monsta X and Monbebe's history. Whenever we go through hardship as fans, I remember to myself "we went through way worse"
I follow a lot of groups since I discovered kpop, and I mean *a lot* , but Monsta X truly marked me so deeply. Shownu left to do his military service, so that's why they are now promoting as 5. Most of us still miss Wonho as Monsta X, but he is also doing really well solo, and right now, Monsta X popularity is skyrocketing even more, it keeps going and I sure hope it will for a long time.

      @toasted_phoenix  Před 2 lety +5

Wow thank you so much for explaining all of this! That's such a heartbreaking story 🥺
I honestly will never be able to understand how people can hate something to the extend of wanting to ruin other people's lives, especially regarding something as 'non-important' as Music (not saying it can't be important, I couldn't survive a single day without music and for all those working in the field it's literally their life. But just in a grand comparison to things that are more tied to human survival, the hate just seems even more useless. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say here 😅)
But at least, to look at it more positively, I think all this has surely made MX and Wonho stronger as artists and humans and the connection to all the Monbebes who stayed with them through this time must be deeper than ever before 😊
I really hope they will be able to grow even stronger from now on 💙

i am so so happy that you reacted to this! and I'm JEALOUS you get to see them this at kpop flex! you'll have a blast, and it'll be even more fun after having learned about them ☺️
Since you love SKZ/ATZ, i am 100% positive you'll love MX just as much as you go along! In my mind, ATZ and SKZ are like the children of MX 😆 musically, stylistically, even energy wise! you can see the direct influence and many members are huge fans of MX (even monbebe themselves^^)
I loveeee MX's music, but what made me ULT them was their personalities! they're some of the most genuine humble idols I've ever had the blessing to know 🥺 and they're also some of the FUNNIEST!
They compete for the most crackhead group alongside BTOB 🤣 that's how crazy they are haha! (BTOB and MX were competing to be variety kings in the clip at 10:44 lol!)
I really hope you check out more of their content 🙏💗 I'll be here if you do!

I got to know their personalities and names/ to faces watching their show " Right Now". Filmed when they were still rookies. Hilarious show.. All episodes are on CZcams! I understand ppl are distracted by Wonho's body/ wardrobe choices. But he makes beautiful songs and total bops too. He is also quite shy ,sentimental, and soft hearted guy.. ☺️ They are all so talented. Alot of songs don't have "mv's" but have assigned videos, it's either a dance practice , special clip, self cam, or film. Be careful with japanese singles and English songs for copyright issues. Wonho's last cb was Follow / Find You. Wonho's vocals remained on the All About luv English album. Shownu's last mv ibefore enlisting is Gambler, his vocals are still in The Dreaming 2nd English album though.👍 I hope you enjoy your journey with them. 🤍

Haha I'm glad then! I was worried that they would be too annoying 😂

  • @doriegom8250
    @doriegom8250 Před 2 lety +7

MX haben 2 komplette englische Alben (All About Luv & The Dreaming) und The Dreaming erschien zusammen mit nem Kinofilm. (Trespass, Rush, All In, Fighter, Beautiful, Shine Forever, Dramarama, Jealousy, Shoot Out, Alligator, Follow, Fantasia, Love Killa, Gambler, Rush Hour, Love).
Secret (Flavors of Love), Secrets (One Of A Kind) und Secrets (The Dreaming) und keiner davon ist auf koreanisch.
No Limit erschien Ende November, The Dreaming Anfang Dezember.

Joohoney is his stage name....It was Jooheon before, but he changed it to Joohoney to make it easier for foreigners to say his name bcz they kept mispronouncing his previous one which is pronounced like this - Joo (like You) and Heon (like in hun).
Wonho left due to allegations of past drug use which he was later cleared of. He left to protect the group. Monsta X has released 2 full English albums....the only Kpop band to do so.
