My favorite John Maclean moment was a q&a video where he was asked, "does your milkshake bring all the boys to the yard?" @@bethmahadocon1887 some people just have that ability and most people have to hold their eye if they flinch and keep closing the eye as they put liner in the eye etc not speaking for everyone but that's just my experience and I don't have to touch my face really when I do

Real life MUAs HAVE to be able to get along. At big events when there's between 5-50 MUAs working together, petty squabbles cannot be a thing. The Welsh Brothers and John are all actual MUAs with real experience in the real world

I’m 23 and I started really getting into makeup at 17. I’ve only ever learned from “ beauty gurus” I’ve learned SO MUCH from this video! I can’t wait to try these techniques!!
UPDATE: wow. My makeup has never looked better. Wtf was I doing using SO MUCH PRODUCT. And swirling my brushes on my face the way i did. Now I look back at photos and realize how thick my makeup was. I’m going to do a video about this lol

I thought I was really reaaally bad at makeup at one point because of influencers. I have hooded eyes and chubby cheeks. Everything the influencers did couldn't be replicated on my face. I felt really bad and thought I sucked at makeup so badly. Until I discovered John Maclean, Wayne Goss and now you. You people really showed me the way. Suddenly I was so good at makeup because I've learned how to do makeup on MY OWN face. I wasn't replicating some other persons style.
And it got recognized! During my graduation people thought I went to a salon to do my makeup but I actually did it all by myself! So thank you. ❤

he practised for a long time! unsure if his old videos are up, but i highly recommend watching them to fully appreciate the effort thats gone in to his self presentation! he does mention it in one of his oldest q&as and honestly hes inspirational

Joey’s Whore I have followed the YT beauty community for years but always felt “less than” because I didn’t like the techniques and makeup they were doing on myself. I felt like I was somehow terrible at doing makeup or just didn’t have the beauty for it to work like they did. The only ones who made me feel like I was doing ok were the Pixiwoo, Lisa Eldridge, Wayne Goss channels, but I still felt antiquated and inadequate in my application because it wasn’t like what all the popular makeup gurus did and liked. Anyone doing different would be RIPPED by the community! I am so thankful that there now seems to be a shift back to genuine, time-rested, universally flattering techniques from people who know what they are talking about! (Ahem- Robert!) I still appreciate seeing a full glam on someone else, but I no longer feel like I am a moron for not wanting to do it on myself! And I also realize it likely doesn’t look very pretty in real life minus the lighting, filters, and edits.

John McLean is my favourite. It's so good to have another Scottish face as pale as mine take acceptance in their skin tone. John McLean has taught me a lot about what products are best for the palest of skin tones since there aren't many brands that tailor to it correctly.
Yess even though I'm eastern European. Everyone is tan or using fake tan and us pale skin girls are called dusty or sick looking by most as they basically don't accept their skintone. He definitely helped me accept my skin and look as beautiful as possible with what nature Gave me

This 💯!! John is one of my absolute favorites because of his expertise with the fairest of skin tones. The industry caters to the middle of the spectrum. So great that consumer brands are FINALLY expanding lighter & creating white mixers as well as expanding darker & creating blue&red mixers. All skin is unique!

If I want to watch makeup for entertainment, I'll watch influencers like Jeffree or Nikki. If I want to watch makeup to actually learn, I'll watch actual artists such as John Maclean or Wayne Goss. Just watching their videos makes me feel so eccentric and classy.
John is one of my absolute favorites because I can learn much that is specific to very fair skin. Lisa Eldridge is also a fave. I enjoy Wayne, but I don't learn as much from him as years ago when he started. He's a very good soul.

He won't say how old he was in his first life or what happened, or if he actually died, however he does admit he is at least 27,000 years old in his current life.
I love John not just because we share the same name, mine is Jonalyn, but I’ve learned to go slow and be precise and even if you think there isn’t any shadow on the brush there is still some and just that tiny amount can make a huge difference.

I was kind of on the fence about liking John MacLean the first time I saw him, but I've got the same skin tone and nose, and I always look for people who have similar shapes.

I started watching John MacLean a while back because I am very pale like he is. He is one of the few who embraced the paleness and showed how to highlight and contour really pale skin rather than try to "bronze it up" to look more tan. It's great to shown and be able to find products that work well for pale skin.
The way Robert is watching and nodding in admiration is lovely. The way he smiles then pauses the video is beautiful- I love seeing an artist appreciate another artists work - this is passion!

I'm rewatching a lot of Robert's older content, and I totes forgot about this one!
Robert, one of the reasons why I started following you all those years ago, is that you have always been 100% REAL and TRUE to the art of makeup.
I grew up a tomboy and didn't really have an interest in makeup until I hit my 20's. I didn't have CZcams or Instagram, I was completely self taught and on my own. So when social media did become a thing and all these influencers came about, I felt like I had been doing makeup all wrong.
Then I stumbled across your page and you not only taught me some things, but you gave me my confidence back! Your techniques were my techniques and it was so refreshing to find someone that could actually teach me correct makeup application.
Now here I am, closer to 40 and my makeup has never looked better! So from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!

The way Robert says 'hi' is so adorable and soft that it gives me life. Literally the definition of kindness in his voice
Yessss! These techniques are not to be used universally, they're most effective when customized to ones own face shape. As I've aged I've changed where I place my highlighter ( even having a premade highlighter that isn't a "frost" or "pearlized" shimmer shadow that I personally crushed up in a dish😘) and especially contour. I now round up on the sides of my chin to disguise my middle aged "jowls" that I've inherited from my father's side. Just doing a "3" from forehead, cheek to chin isn't what everyone needs to balance their face out. Love you loving John whom I love was a real treat! Thanks, Robert 💋
My second comment after completely watching the video: To me, this is exactly where the huge difference lies (just while I was typing this, Robert has just mentioned the difference between an artist and an influencer!): An influencer, for me, is someone who just got influenced by everything they saw from the other so-called influencers, but they have actually never LEARNT. Because there wasn't anything educational or creative in those contents they followed and most of them don't educate or improve themselves. An artist, on the other hand, just like our dear Robert and John, they know the techniques, different face shapes, that not every technique will work the same way for everyone. And they know how to TEACH. I have enjoyed this video so much. Thank you, Robert!!!
So spot on. I was having such a hard time to find a makeup artist for my wedding (now postponed due to the pandemic) because there were so many ppl claiming to be makeup artist who really were just ppl copying the "influencer/youtuber" way fo doing makeup. To top it off, they were trying to charge prices as is they were an actual professional! For anyone struggling to determine how to wing out the fakes from the true professionals, just take a look at the cheeks! The fakes contours and blush are either never blended out properly or the contour isn't suitable for the persons face (looks like a brow stripe down the cheek and not actually contouring anything).

Yes, I find him informative and interesting because he's unique and confident with it. The heavy makeup/contour face, plastic surgery body, fake tan and vacuous mind image isn't realistic or attainable and reminds me of human BRATZ dolls.... This is the second “reacts” video I’ve seen with John Maclean as the focus and the first time, I wasn’t sure what to think of them. This time I’ve come to the conclusion that that is really just John Maclean being John Maclean. It makes me want to go watch more of their videos, and dig into my own makeup collection just for giggles even though Im stuck at home.

I loved this video, especially the speech at the end. For the longest time I felt like I was doing makeup wrong or I had bad skin bc youtube beauty "gurus" use filters so they look amazing! It wasn't until someone explained this in a video that it isn't me, it's just that I don't have a filter over my face so of course I have texture!
