Art teacher here (21 years experience). There are definitely people who are gifted with a talent for artistic endeavors. Just as there are people who have an aptitude for science and math, or sports etc. - there are people who possess natural ability for color, composition and technique. Those individuals will need nurturing, to refine their natural talent, (and practice). But I’ve also had students with no natural aptitude for art- and while it’s admittedly harder, it is entirely possible to coax and train them to be artistic! If they are both determined, and disciplined, (and have a good teacher) they can be successful. My most valuable tool as a teacher is encouragement.

i think artistry can be both learned and something innate, but creativity is something you're born with. i think everyone is creative just on different spectrums. i also think you're more likely to pursue something that you're "born with", but that doesn't mean you can't learn things you're not good at.

I agree, kind of. LOL While some people seem to be natural born innovators and creative fountains, a lot of it has to do with experiences. The more input a child is exposed to, in books, experiences, interaction, pretend play, and the ability to experiment and explore, the more nuggets they will have to put together to form ideas for future situations. The prior experiences also teach the child a lot about how those nuggets work and/or fit together. Another important piece of the puzzle is encouragement. If the child has a strong supportive environment, this allows the child to develop the courage and confidence to put forth creative efforts. Many keep in their creativity because they do not feel confident enough to share it.

    • @nataskuryl

Even though I think creativity is something that you’re either born with or develop at a very young age, you shouldn’t feel discouraged if you’re not as creative as you’d like to be.
You can still improve, as you gain experience, practice and expand your mental library. You might not become a creative genius that keeps popping out the most innovative ideas, but you can most definitely become more creative than the average person. That’s how I see it at least.

Art school wanker here: We were taught both. There's a difference between talented and skilled - and all the greats have both. It's kind of like the talent comes through with the ideas and the initial stages of the work/drafting process when you just kind of vomit out everything with passionate abandon, but skills are those learned techniques (whether it be by a formal or informal education/experience) where you refine and tweak the piece into a final product... at least that's how it's supposed to work according to our lecturers.

Those people learn and develop skills like everyone else but there’s a part of their brain that allows them to approach something differently or see it from a different angle than others. All the designers I’ve employed that have natural talent have generally blown me away more than people that are just amazingly skilled.

I'd say creativity aka creative thinking is something that can be learned. Just like logical thinking.
One of my teacher's complained (he's a certified genius) that school only teaches logical thinking but not creative thinking.
I think since creative thinking isn't teached much anymore, a lot of people think creativity is rare or a gift.
I also think it's not that clear to alot of people how to teach creative thinking. I mean, it's already not that easy with logical thinking.
Though I also think people can be talented at creative thinking making them have an easier time learning those skills.
In the end, we humans are always born not knowing anything. Everything we can do, is from learning and practicing. Creativity isn't excluded by this.

YES! In my high school I once had a workshop on creativity and how you can use it to learn better/ easier/ faster. The workshop was given by non-teachers and one of their main points was that you can *learn* to be creative. It is something that can be developed, like any other skill, no matter how old you are. This was really mindblowing to me. We did many exercises that showed us that your creative abilities can easily be expanded.

I remember the orange foundation cutting of on the jawline so vividly. Eyeliner became big too, thanks to Lauren Conrad from The Hills. And sticky, shiny, shimmery lipgloss which we applied way too much of and caught stray hairs all the time. Drawing on the eyebrows with pencils that had way too much red undertone... Oh how happy I am that there's not too much footage from those days as there is now 😅

James channel is good for new people getting into skincare but then you know what works for you and move on bc then the rest of the content is more of the same. With makeup tho! Theres always more to it I believe 💖 plus Robert is an actual profesional in his channel’s field and that is a plus to his content and posts. I think the beautiful thing about like is that we all have inherent talents that we can hone to become more skilled. Disingenuous to me to think we're all born the same with the same 'stats'. Variety and individuality is the spice of life and we all bring different strengths to the table :) However, I don't think there's a single person that was ever born with zero creativity or lack of talent in something at all. So in that regard, I defintely agree that nurture vs nature can unfortunately be a destructive force to the individual.

Even when I was in kindergarten, long before I knew what was going on in the world and when people were still supportive, I had zero creative streak. Art classes were always hell for me, since I never knew what to draw and couldn't even do it if I wanted. I never had much of an imagination as a kid, either. To answer your question, personally I think in order to be artistic there is a little something that gives people that passion to spend the time practicing and learning.
My older brother is an amazing artist in many genres, he can draw, he can paint, he taught himself how to play guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, clarinet. His over all thoughts of how the world works meant that his coursework in his masters degree was then used as a teaching tool by the professors in future years classes. He is wicked smart, he has his phd in theoretical physics.
Meanwhile, I left school with no GCSE’s and a baby. 😂😂😂 So whatever makes him so brilliant definitely isn’t genetic.
