I miss my 53 Clio 172 Cup. It was the most fun I've ever had on 3 wheels.
Theres no denying that the Trophy was and still is an absolute beast; but the 172 Cup will always be the last one true greatest hot hatch.
I currently own a 172 and its the best thing Ive ever driven. And my previous car was an ST220.
3 wheels huh? Thought of yourself rather clever don’t ya?
@@supercooled I somehow never got a notification for your comment.
In all honesty when I got the Cup on to 3 wheels I wasn't thinking I was clever - I was shitting myself. Only after I got back on to 4 wheels was I grinning like an idiot. The thing with the 2003 172 Cup was that it was a stripped down track car compared to the luxury 172 - there was no ABS, no traction control (and no air-con), but it was lowered, had stiffer suspension, had a cute little rear spoiler, competition disc brakes (which you could lock up in the rain just by thinking about using them) and really nice lightweight wheels.
However, it was incredibly light so you could throw it anywhere, and the mechanical grip is insane hence why you could get it on to 3 wheels. It'll go around corners like the bikes from Tron ! The 2003 172 Cup weighed 1080KG without my fat arse in it, but the normal 172 was closer to 1200 I think. My car is still alive and well in Tunbridge Wells - my buddy lives there and still sees it around town.
@@supercooled Thats call a tight proper front wheel drive chassis....car into corner turn in stiff chassis lifts rear wheel....i would not say he is clever i would say he is driving correctly.....exactly how renault wanted the car to handle.
@@davemellor4697 not hating. I drove a rathe anemic Toyota echo before they became a Yaris hit not was powered on sports springs and truth be told they were a barrel of laughs around a corner. The suspensions were so stiff it didn’t have any travel at all and it’s light as a feather. With only 106hp hit weighing less than 2500lbs they were fun around a corner. I have a 200hp turbocharged k3 now may be you guys get the pro ceed gt in the uk and they are quite a competent car from the factory but with a little mods they are fun as well.
I love Harry's diaries. He can talk about any car with such passion and knowledge that you rarely see in other videos.
I am sure the values of these trophies went up a little after this video.
Probably.. its trophys owners hobby..😅
Devastated you are leaving Evo, Harry. Your diaries are one of the enduring pleasures of CZcams for me, but best wishes for your new role.
I didn't know Throphy version was so different and special. Great little car, and fantastic to see it beside so many supercars !
By a looooooooong way, he is the greatest. Every time I see he's got a new video diary up, I feel as though I should put on some tea and settle in to enjoy it.
Such an incredible man.
Kei
I owned a 172, the most fun I've ever had, bought a Golf GTI VI after it but never felt the same buzz. It was like the Clio kept tapping you on the shoulder going "...faster, hit that corner harder..." The GTI (as much as I loved it) felt like a GT compared to the 172. A brilliant car.
Mabye you miskate buying a vw... You had a 172, the next is the Megane RS !
Renault Clio TROPHYs were sold in Mexico too, and were sold in French Racing Blue with Gordini stripes.
Seems like he has a soft spot for that Clio, even over all those other cars in his collection.. lovely car and agreed it hits a lot of the criteria of what defines a hot hatch. great video. thanks.
Everything said in this video, couldn't agree more. Spot on, and a great car.
Harry is the best storyteller ever. I love his videos. So polished, so much enthusiasm...for whatever he's driving. Much respect. Thanks.
Loved this, the anectodal stuff always gets me.
Thanks for the video, Harry's series are one of the few on YT that are worth settling down to watch.
Amazing! it's a shame no manufacturer makes great raw feeling cars like this any more. Gone are they days of small compact lightweight high revving NA engined cars that are ultra fun and chuckable in the bends. It's a real shame that these type of cars are a dying breed, it all seems to be about large heavy forced induction bhp figure chasing cars these days.
Now i'm not saying that modern cars are bad far from it they are great but from my experience they just aren't as raw or fun as they used to be.
I also like my Clio 1.4 L it's a very eazy driven and fun car .. i can imagine this beast ;-)
Harry is Evo. Will be missed.
luminor007
Doesnt work for Evo anymore
Hayden Gray where is he working now?
I think he is working for Jaguar now.
Worked for Evo? He owned and founded Evo..
YouwhatNow he sold it. Made lots of money.
Thanks for sharing your fantastic collection with us on those brilliant Videos, Harry.
Renault have always been good at small hot hatches. I remember going in a R5 Gordini in the early 80's, and man that thing was really fast. They were 800kg or less. Then out came the R5 Gordini Turbo. Only to be superseded in the late 80's with the R5 Turbo. But like your 182 Trophy, the old plain R5 Gordini was better as it was NA, and just thrived on revs. The good ol days of Hot Hatches !.
thank you for another enjoyable episode of your diaries. incredibly insightful and so pleasant to watch. i'm convinced that even if they gave you a mediocre car you would still make it look fantastic. your passion for cars is inspirational!
I am looking for another Clio 182 now I’ve seen this video again 😊 great stuff Harry 👍🏻
One of my all-time favourite hot hatches.
This is a great Evo Diary! It talks about the small things and the history - things you don't hear in any other car review. Thanks for taking the Evo Diary back to its roots. The recent ones haven't been as good.
I bought a Trophy in 2009 after the motoring press, especially Evo, absolutely raved about how great they were. And I never regretted it for a second! Thanks Evo for planting the Trophy seed in my mind and for this video, which reminds me how awesome the car (which I have unfortunately since sold) was. Nice one!
Love the evo diary episodes, and a great little car!
Another brilliant video Harry! Thanks.
I had a Clio 182 (not a trophy, unfortunately) from new with 9 miles on the clock and sold it 3yrs later with 120K on the clock. I loved every single mile in that car! :)
Again, another fantastic video Harry.. Thank you for making/sharing these with us ! I still have vivid memories of that '05 eCOTY magazine article - loved the fact that a proper hot-hatch was showing-up supercars/sportscars costing 6x as much. Always admired that it garnered a 3rd place overall that year.. I just wish they were sold in Canada ! :( ...And yes, to mirror what others have questioned - the Zonda is back.. ? ? !
Thanks Harry, love your videos!
Just got my second 182, after a few upgrades (bushes, suspension) i am amazed with the sound and power of these little things.. just a fun cheap car!
Would you recommend it as a second car ?
+Sam Cooper absolutely, they are just really fun cars and now classed as race classic. Love mine!
It's a Renault so build quality will be an issue, and by that I mean that wear and tear will take it's toll. Mechanically it's solid, and corrosion will be less than usual for you because no snow=no salt. I don't know what your roads are like so that's also something to think about - twisty roads will mean you'll be grinning like an idiot for as long as you own it. Straight roads will bore you and deafen you because of the whining engine. Bumpy roads aren't that much fun for passengers, but then that's their problem :)
Love it! Awesome play by play.
Nice touch with the exhaust sir! Love your vids! Greets from Croatia.
Amazing review, you can literally feel the passion in him. Amazing car btw.
Excellent vid, i remember reading the issue well! Great vid, great mag!
Very good video Harry! This kind of purchase/ownership stories shows great love for cars! Respect!!
Maybe your best ever video Harry ... Great insight into those dampers!!
Another great Harry video. The Clio Trophy a future classic no doubt about it!
Man, you are one lucky guy owning all those beautiful cars.
I still have my 172. It's still fantastic!
Fantastic review, you can see he REALLY enjoys driving it and talking about it. As usual, a top notch review from Mr. Metcalfe.
precise calm, and intimate as always, keep on truckin' harry :)
"I just can't help but drive this car like a tit"
great little car, and amazing collection Mr.Metcalfe!
Brilliant review...! thanks!
awesome bloke…awesome review awesome car love my 182
love the little clios!
I have my clio 182 in Mexico es called RS team and some years back had an RS 2002, it might be noisy, with not the best plastics and maybe the looks not so radical than others performance cars but driving them are addictive, best clio RS in my opinión as well and the best hot hatch I have ever driven, the smile and excitement it makes you feel is priceless.
Excellent video I really enjoyed watching it, I gained new knowledge about the 182 and after watching this shall be looking for the trophy to purchase for summer track car, I currently own m5 e60 also
+MrMacaroni13 Get a 172 and strip it out. Just as much fun, easier to find and cheaper.
Nice to see a man who has those cars take a wheel off. Though he has removed engines in the past, so childs play. So knows his stuff as well as being financially unchallenged.
Once again, excellent review! Do you people see the smile in his face? That's how I smiled too when I first turned the wheel of my Clio. I don't know why but the Clio has that affect to people who like driving. I personally have a 1.4 98HP and even now if you take it to a proper road and thrash it, it's amazing! I like it more than my 207 RC or my RX8 Cosmo. This Clio generation is simply put awesome!
8 yrs and i'm still loving mine. Ta for the recommendation Hazza
He has a Damn nice collection and nice house of they're all his!
He sold Evo. Made a pretty penny.
Harry - the greatest
Brilliant video I loved it, I have a 172Cup which I have had for 4 years and I doubt I'll ever get bored of it it's too much fun!. The Sach dampers make the Trophy that little bit more special then a cup and that's why I'll be purchasing one next. (and yes I will be taking the aircon out)
It's impossible not to love your videos Harry! ... and your garage as well....!!
Wish i could've kept all the 25 cars i've owned to date :-D
I have got a Renault megane r26 and this summer I will buy a clio 182! The car I had in my dreams in 2005
classy video, the best EVO diaries yet
Harry....realllly enjoy your reviews...keep em coming
Lovely collection, wonderful video
A few months ago i bought my dream car........a clio 182......and man did i fell even more inlove whit the car !!!!
I realy enjoyed watching this video, I didnt know the trophys had plastic front wings and different front dampers ect. Iv been looking for a hot hatch that will put a smile on my face and after watching this I kmow what I will be buying.
I thoroughly enjoyed owning #007 for the first few years of its life.
Another fantastic video.
Gorgeous video!
Harry you make the best Evo videos!!!
He is so right, I'll never foget my first go behind the wheel, truly special.
Amazing car! Thinking of buying one.
Stunning looking Clio.. it makes me very possessive. I've got a blue 172 Phase II myself, with the same Speedline Turini rims. :) (albeit a different size perhaps, I've got 195/45R16 tyres, the Trophy's got 205/45R16 apparently)
Anyway, it's great fun to drive. It might not be the most refined - it's quite noisy and everything vibrates when you're waiting for a traffic light - but it still puts a smile on my face everytime I start the engine en take it for a spin. I love it.
The man tells great stories. I appreciate it.
Very interesting. Thanks for the post
The best of your diaries!
Harry I love your videos and anecdotes.
Same dampers I installed on my FWD(stock TC) VOLVO V40 (2001)with the swapped 5cyl rebuilt engine of the V70,with a Garrett Turbo,430 HP(enough,to take on a lot of "sport's cars, barely 1080 KG,Wilwood brakes,215" TOYO Tires,on 17" light rims,the perfect"sleeper",this suspension is just amazing for any powerful,light FWD Cars.Just bought a Clio 1.4 16V(98HP Stock)for 1000 Euros,already a little badass car,project is to rebuild the engine for 200 HP.
Another awesome video
I am very proud to be a Clio owner.. I need some serious restoration of mine...
Great review!
I could watch Harry TV all day, every day.
My Clio 182 was a great car, drove to south of France twice, up Mount Ventoux and Route Turini. I can thank EVO for recommending the 182 and also those driving roads. Upgraded to a Megane 230 F1 now and looking forward to doing the same trips again :)
It might be a posh 182 but I can tell from your smile it's still a 182. I've had my vanilla 182 with the Cup pack for over 10 years and it still makes me smile. BTW yes why don't more manufacturers use light weight wings, their only purposes are form, aero and cosmetic so it's a no brainer.
Really good review thank you
Another great video by Mr Metcalfe! Harry, you should have your own TV show!
I have a 182 FF with the Cup pack and it's hilarious, even better is that it's silver which makes it a bit of a sleeper. I use it as a daily and with all the toys including the cruise control it's actually a pretty decent 35mpg hack. It's also great exercise as my left calf muscle can now crush stone due to the clutch.
Fascinating insight into what makes this car so special !. Another great video Harry. When i get reincarnated can i please come back as your long lost son !
What a collection!
Great video EVOTV!! I'm the current owner of Trophy #067 and following a Petrolhead Nirvana tour to Wales this year, I'll vouch for them punching well above their weight with the big boys :) Undoubtedly the most fun you can buy for £5k!
ive got a 182 cup, absolutely brilliant, recommend it to anyone, so much fun
+Haziiyama Whats it like to work on? I want to get one this year :)
u will notice straight away everything is packed tightly in the engine bay, so it is a pain to get to certain things... but so far i've done stainless steel exhaust decat and put on a K&N airfilter, easy enough i suppose, im quite new to cars myself, they are actually really reliable as long as u take care of them, like most cars nowadays i suppose :)
How about those special Sachs shocks Harry preached about? Are they really that good, what abut the daily drive-ability of it? (please and thanks)
A Jovial CZcams commenter I have the Cup pack Clio 182 (Not the Trophy), so mine has the standard shocks. According to most people there isn't a massive difference. As a daily driver it's fine, usually get 35mpg~. But if you take it for a blast on a country road like most sports cars it will guzzle petrol. I drive it to work everyday (only a few miles) and its fine. It doesn't belong on motorways or long journeys tho, my exhaust is a lot louder than stock so any longer than 2 hours on a motorway gets tiresome because the cabin isn't good at cancelling noise
Nice house and car collection Harry!! Awesome!
Still in love with that car even though it has been 4 years now since Ive sold it
Great video! And you're spot on when you say a true hot hatch should have a naturally aspirated engine! Couldn't agree moore.
Thanks for another lovely video Mr. Metcalfe. I own a 197 for more than 3 years and I could not agree more about the weight issue. It is something I noticed clearly after I started a racer hatchback project which weighs around 850-900kg. However, I have to disagree about the steering and power. The electric assist almost disappears on the go and you are left with amazing feedback. The engine is just enough and the car needs an LSD for slow corners. I love the 6 speed too but I need an overdrive.
Nice collection
I purchased mine after reading Jethro's report in Evo. What a car!
Now I'm looking for another one, best shopping trolley ever made and then some.
The best Evo videos are done by Harry
Loved the video, still miss my 182. 110k miles and 8 years in my possession until it was written off :(
Countach, Delta Integrale, Zonda S, and Clio Trophy... OMG amazing cars collection!!! And 550 V12 aaaaaa
Nice collection Harry!
11:40 "Another great thing about the Trophy are the brakes"... then the brake lights flash. Brilliant editing!
Ever since I got into cars at a young age, I would always talk to my dad about the newest quickest supercar I just found and he would always say that he'd much rather have a small hothatch than a 600hp rocketship and I didn't get it. Now that I'm older, I do. I'd much rather bang around some backroads in a 205 GTI or a Clio RS than do 300 km/h on the Autobahn in an Audi R8.
Old comment but you and your dad are spot on. Nothing beats the fun of a well sorted hot hatch if you value driving
Love my 182 if your thinking of getting a hot hatch this car is the one its a bloody blast of fun too drive
Still have it ?
That whole era of clio sport is gonna go down in history next to MK1 golf GTIs and Peugeot 205 GTIs imo, don't even need the special editions just a base 172 is sheer brilliance.
Great explanation.
That's a heck of a collection. Can't wait for the piece on the 308.
The Best!!!
