And another thing that these tutorials have helped me with is being more patient with my pencil drawings, which is something I never had time to practice, and these tutorials give me that practice! Thanks so much Dave!

    I love your point about being able to create en edge of a face with another shape. This is basically just painting! Starting out with the big shapes and then going in and adding the details and softening transitions from dark to light.

    I realized I tend to do this but in a bad way, I use it as a crutch to make up for mistakes in my perspective and shape. I love the style but I really need to learn to draw my shapes the right way from the start and not just fill in everything when It doesn't work out. (I am a very new artist, so when I say shape I mean the "Rock" that you might mistake for a slime in a video game)

    David, can you do a tutorial on drawing small characters? Drawing foreground and mid ground characters feels intuitive when it comes to detail. For some reason I try to add too much detail for small scale figures (background, small panels, etc). Then they start to get muddy. If I try to be minimal they turn out looking cheap and unfinished. Seems like every line counts more the smaller the figure.

  • @jcfemiani

    Thanks for the great video! Focusing on shadow shape gives a very beautiful effect, but I am a bit confused by the focus on shadows for negative space - I thought negative space was, for example, focusing on the triangles between the pieces of wood rather than the pieces of wood themselves. For example in a landscape rendering the gaps of light between leaves instead of the leaves themselves. Or the triangle or diamond shape one often sees between an arm and a figure’s torso. Is focusing on shadows a mental trick to get you to pay attention to the gaps?

    • @hyrofx9124
      @hyrofx9124 Před 3 lety +1

      Negative space is I think a broad term and has many meanings attached to it. I think negative space in essence is: What you put down/draw = positive space, what you leave out/don't touch = negative space.
