I have to say that the title of this exposition is deviating, but this speech is the most clear, assertive and short I've heard of the way about how Russia passed from communism to Putin neo-tsarism.

I know about the Magnitski act but I didn't know the story. I'm glad I watched this. We should all be working hard to bring justice for this man. He had more honor in one finger than 99.999 percent of men I know.

He actually took his mother to a show, andt had a very large part of the show about [women's genitalia]. His mother walked out in disgust. That's the kind of guy we are dealing with. I have read Mr Browder's books and was filled with admiration for his determined pursuit of justice, but hearing his voice crack as he tells the story of Mr Magnitsky's fate, even though he must have told it many times before, reveals even more about the quality of both men.

The most important countries to have this law passed on isn't Germany but all the tiny tax havens, like Panama, Isle of Man, Cyprus, Andorra, Monaco, Malta, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Bahamas, Aruba, etc. There's where their money goes to.

I'd partly heard of the Magnitsky Act, but never found out it's actual origin. Thank you William Browder for enlightening me about the man who stood up to greed and corruption and paid the ultimate price. Further reading on Sergei reveals he was was born and raised in Odessa in the Ukraine - ironically one of the coastal cities on Putin's current 'must have' list. Sergei Magnitsky was as brave then, as every Ukrainian is being now. How much longer can Putin order - and get away with - the bullying and killing of foreign and Russian innocents? The man is a megalomaniac bully and those who support him are just as complicit. SLAVA UKRAINI.

He modestly left out the part where Putin had Interpol put out a Red Notice international arrest warrant on him (as described in his wonderful book “Red Notice” which greatly expands on all this in much more, very interesting, detail).
You’re right. I have that book. Pretty harrowing.
Red Notice is a real page turner, well written, and informative. It’s legacy is how Putin is being treated right now.

I just finished his book Red Notice. It describes this story in much more detail. Corruption is the greatest threat to any nation, or organization. I’m awed by Mr Browser’s bravery and unflinching determination to bring justice for his friend Magnitsky and his family and for continuing to fight for meaningful change in the world.

"The UK Magnitsky Act. It was announced on 6th July 2020 that the UK was to impose sanctions on 49 named individuals including those implicated in the deaths of Magnitsky and Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. It is expected that more names will follow.!

@@SueFerreira75 I brought Red Notice to the hospital when my dad was admitted. He snuck it away from me and wouldn't let it go. At 96 years old, the story had him hooked. It was the last book my father read which was a little sad for me. He had a dear friend in Russia, and I'm sure it broke his heart. --- sorry, too much information.

I was very touched by the story of Sergey Magnizkiy. life is very unfair. Why people have to suffer for saying the truth.
Why do people suffer for telling the truth? Because honest people hate dishonesty, and dishonest people are afraid of being exposed.
"The righteous detest the dishonest; the wicked detest the upright." (Proverbs 29: 27).
What happens when a corrupt person becomes a country's leader? The country falls apart.
"By justice a king gives a country stability, but those who are greedy for bribes tear it down." (Proverbs 29: 4).
What can be done about Russia? Easy. Get rid of corruption, starting at the top.
"When the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding; but when the wicked perish, the righteous thrive." (Proverbs 28: 28).
Because criminals like Putin have interferences on their criminal activities fron truth and honest people.

This was an incredible story and I am glad the name of that lawyer is now set in stone. It is tragic how he had to die to get there. I hope Mr. Browder took care of his family, and I want to believe he did. Very sad and beautiful story.

There's a book he wrote called The Red Notice. It's not the same as the Netflix show... His family was present in Washington when they passed the law and I believe they are out of Russia and Bill definitely helped them out. It's been a few years since I read the book.

@@altgenesis Yes he did. To this day he is friends with the family and together they keep trying to uncover the corruption. You claim he took all the money out of Russia. Where is your proof? Do you have access to his accounts? To start a hedge fund you need capital. The fund was started with foreign investors who put money into Russia. When he liquidated his Russian assets, he just recovered his investors money. You need to look at the Russian Oligarchs and Putin to find out who is taking money out of Russia.
Sergei Magnitsky was a brave man.

What an extraordinary story and courageous man. His death is now commemorated in the legislation that was used to impose the sanctions against those criminal Oligarchs feeding Putin. Australia passed a similar legislation just in the nick of time in December 2021.

Mr Magnitsky is a man of honour, strength and courage. Few people could ever take that amount of torture for so long and have kept their grit. This fellow should have been the most honoured Hero of Russia.

It's frustrating, for sure. I'm assuming partisans found the video and have somehow determined that Browder's experience with Putin and the Russian government is a fabrication.
Russia has been waging virtual war on the west for years, with cyberattacks, social media disinformation campaigns and botnets (no doubt including ones that mass upvote or downvote posts), state-sponsored propaganda, political manipulation (including supporting trump and other corrupt autocrats around the world), and targeted assassinations of defectors. Zillions of fake accounts commenting endlessly on stories like this run by disinformation officers in Russia is a big part of this.

Even now in 2022, Mr. Browder is rallying European & Western nations to enact new legislation to seize money and assets (luxury mansions, yachts, etc.) from Russian billionaires who secretly hold much of putin's money.
He's brave, and a defender of justice. Bravo to Mr. Browder!

Mr. Browder is a hero for so much folks but also for his lawyer, I hope he has helped his lawyers family with lots of money because they need it and helped them get out of Russia.

I just finished his book, Red Notice, and just started his second one, Freezing Order. If you want a much more comprehensive understanding of how Russia really works and how it got that way I recommend these two, starting with Red Notice. Freezing Order is a second part. Bill Browder is my new hero.

I had heard of the name, but never knew the whole story- so thank you so much for spelling out the horrors that Sergei had to bear, and we needed this huge reminder of who putin really is - and hopefully the need for his complete removal from power, and his actual 'rewards' for all of this horror. So many ruined lives, so many decent people trying to get it right - we all know it is not the Russian people, but without standing up to the tyrants, things never change.

Yes it is the russian people. It's not putin shelling hospitals and theatres, not putin driving over civilian cars with families inside, not putin shooting children. This is all done by russian hands. Government is a reflection of society's values, war is a collective responsibility. There's a reason why many companies leave russia - over 70% of russians support the war in Ukraine.
If you don't believe me, talk to an average russian. You'll be shocked just how barbaric their thinking is. Constantly living in the past glory of a big empire, wanting to revive that. They don't define greatness as being democratic, not having a dictator, and connecting with other counties. They define greatness as having the will to attack other countries and expand territory.
Please never say that again - "it's not the russian people". It is, they are.
