  • On a whim, rising theatre director Peregrine Jay views a derelict Victorian playhouse, The Dolphin Theatre on London's South Bank, where he falls into a wartime bomb crater on the stage and is rescued from drowning by the theatre's owner, the enigmatic multi-millionaire Vassily Conducis, who listens to and finances the young theatre practitioner's vision of a restored Dolphin Theatre, which duly opens with the premiere of Jay's play 'The Glove", inspired by a cheverel glove Conducis owns and has shown to Jay, with faded documents suggesting it was made for Shakespeare's only son Hamnet, who died young.
Death at the Dolphin is a detective novel by Ngaio Marsh. It is the twenty-fourth novel to feature Roderick Alleyn, and was first published in 1967. The plot centers on a glove once owned by Hamnet Shakespeare, on display at a newly renovated theater called the Dolphin. The novel was published as Killer Dolphin in the United States. Several characters from the novel return in Marsh's final book, Light Thickens.

A couple of years ago I read ALL of Ngaio Marsh's books, short stories and autobiography. I love her. I don't think she gets the credit she deserves for being such a wonderful writer. Beautifully written prose that you can sink your teeth into. Glad to see this here. Thanks.

I so very much enjoy these old British radio dramas (not the US ones at all unfortunately) I have problems falling off to sleep and find them such a good way to wind down at the end of the day, the only problem is I usually have to listen to the same play more than once I hate to miss the end of the stories. Thanks to Chesterton radio for your fantastic uploads!

“Let’s forget about him now!”? Rather swift amnesia, that. NO SPOILER. But when you’ve got to the end, my fellow listeners, you’ll know to what I refer. Good listening! A smashing crime drama that starts off dramatically but slowly & builds to a satisfying if quiet finish. A ripping rather intellectual whodunit. What we have learnt to expect from N Marsh.

Nicely constructed detective thriller set in the newly reopened Shakespearean Dolphin Theatre. Long build up while you wonder who the victim will be then a swift who done it. Satisfying

Marsh is better than Allingham. Most of her novels are an absolute delight! The novels she wrote in her 80s are better than Christie’s when the latter was the same age.

That does happen! I agree w you. It happens w some of the Poirots too, not only the films w Suchet (there is some controversy, admittedly), but the audio Poirots as well. When Hastings narrates, for instance. Better than Dame Agatha’s at times awkward phrasing.

Me Marsh had probably never actually met any members of the lower classes ? Like Dame Agatha . Although to be fair , she was not as revoltingly snobbish as Dorothy L Sayers !

    JUST. . USE. YOUR
    IMAGINATION
Walking up to the front of the boarded-up
    ticket booth ?
Double doors on both sides, to a front lobby with a counter of where the popcorn is or was ?
And the Ghostly Girl standing behind the counter waiting to serve you ...
And you have an usher on each side that would take your ticket and walk you down to the seat ?
In this circumstance it would be two
    ghostly Usher's
    Ha. Ha. Ha....
    In. Real reality
    What - Fun........
    ""Walking back into time"""
Really do you know how exciting that would really really be.
    Today ? ( in 2020 )
    Have you ever been in,
    an old building ?
"" Of course you have. ""
    -- Not a movie theater ;
    -- an old drug store
    -- something like that
    Now my friends,
Have you ever been in an old (closed up)
    Vaudeville then movie
    (( Theater ))
    I certainly have about,
45 years ago. I guess yes I'm showing my age.
Now, besides that to restore something to its original capacity is an magnificent thing to do.
It's so much better than building new homes you're really bringing something back to life.
Now yes this is only a play I've listened to it before in the past Now it's been so long I don't remember
    the play...
So as a spectator I'm going to head back and start from the very beginning and listen to the creaky door.
I will begin to listen as every one else of the talking about the 1880s.
    The magical time of Vaudeville
    I love old history,
    Even though
    It's partially make believe
    See you later
    Enjoy as I will ;
    Everyone.........
