    This video was extremely helpful! I cut and cropped a sweater earlier today and had no clue what I was going to do to the new fraying hem! I used my serger and it turned out so much better than I thought it would. I am thinking I will probably hand stitch the serged edges down on the inside so it lays flatter after pressing some, but otherwise it is so great! Thank you!

    This is so necessary!!! I have a cream cashmere sweater I got a coffee stain on it and couldn't get it out and made more damage using bleach 🥴 whoops!! Ican stretch it enough to cut the stain out and crop it. I think this will work!! Thank you!!

      @@SewAnastasia I found your other video without the serger so I will use that method. Question... my sweater is ivory and cashmere with a small knit weave , so no designs or crazy knitted pattern. The stain is a bit too high as it's right below the bust by 1 inch and would be shorter than I prefer if I did a 1 inch hem. I may have to give it a 4-5 inch hem after measuring it which would create a seam line 1 inch under the bust but the crop would hit at the belly button. Would this look awful 😖? LOL Curious what you think about this long hem if the seam line would ruin the look... i guess it would be like an empire waisted cropped sweater?
      Interested in your response. If it's better to do it shorter I could later it over a dress. Thanks for your help Anastasia!! I subscribed and I need to get back into a sewing class. You're very sweet and inspiring!!

  • @blueminnie13
    @blueminnie13 Před 5 lety +10

    When I have shortened knits, I sew some stay stitching to hold the edges together "before" cutting. You have less stretching and areas that may run or unravel.

    • @echoiburbank
      @echoiburbank Před 5 lety +2

      That's a great idea! They always bunch weird from stretching when I've tried it!

    • @pamgroom7117
      @pamgroom7117 Před 5 lety

      Is that just a straight stitch using a sewing machine above where you plan to cut? I noticed stretching when I shorten sweaters as well.

    • @blueminnie13
      @blueminnie13 Před 5 lety +3

      Yes, a straight stitch on the side where you will have the new hem or on both pieces if rejoining a decorative hem after shortening. If it's a thick knit, use a little longer stitch so it doesn't bunch up. You could also hand sew a running stitch. Sometimes it is easier to maintain an even hem with all hand sewing especially with a cable or decorative knit. Hope this is helpful. @@pamgroom7117

      @@blueminnie13 How long is a longer stitch?

    • @blueminnie13
      @blueminnie13 Před 4 lety +1

      @@katbird5626 My machine has a basting stitch that stitches every 1/2 inch. I would use that on a thick knit (like a sweater) especially if I want to remove it after you attach the pieces. On a thinner knit, a stitch every 1/4 inch might work. If you have some scraps or even some old knee socks you could practice before sewing your knit top. I hope this helps!

    I have a puff sleave "way too long on me" cream coloured sweater, that I have been planning on cropping to "my fit".
    I love the excess fabric used as a scarf/ turtle neck. That's what I was thinking of doing also.
    I am going to "trim/tailor the sides in", as well, when I crop my sweater. (We call them "jumper" in Australia/England)
    We call surger "over-locker", down here in Australia... for any of your southern hemisphere viewers.

    I would suggest before cutting run a loose machine stitch above the ribbing and another just below where you intend to re attatch that way there os no running esp if it is an easy unravel stich. a couple extra minutes are so worth having more control

    That came out pretty nice; considering that you were working with a pretty bulky sweater. What surprised me was when you lined up the seams on the band to the seams on the sweater - that was pretty thick. I was surprised the serger needle went right through that. That is the one thing that would've held me back from cropping that thick of a sweater. Congrats!

    Do you think it’s possible to do a video on how to put an elasticated waist in a jumper dress? Or add denim pockets to the back of a denim shirtdress. I was thinking couldn’t I just cut the back pockets from some old jeans and then sew them on the back? It’s purely for aesthetic purposes lol
    I’m not a sample size so I often have to customise my clothes. Could you show us how to take two of the same dresses and use one to make the other more appropriate I.e using the material for length or an under skirt. A lot of stuff I have is very short so I was thinking to to buy twice and then add where I need to.
    I also like the idea of adding things like a peplum to enhance shape etc. I’ve basically bought two of the same dresses because it was very see through and short and I’m hoping to create a better version lol
    Both dresses were on sale so it was worth it especially if I end up with a deress that fits my body shape and height perfectly ❤xxxx

    Hi Anastasia, I want to sew a serger edge on my sweater to hem it. I tested the fabric and the edge looks like lettuce which is not what I want. Is there a setting I need to adjust?

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  Před rokem +1

      Yes, You need to increase your differential feed.

    • @MariaKarras
      @MariaKarras Před rokem

      @@SewAnastasia I increased the differential feed to 2 which is the max. It's better. But not quite there. Is there another adjustment I can make?

    Hi I bought a knit dress which I love but the sleeves are very long. Can you tell me how to shorten them🙏. The sleeves don't have any ribbing. Thanks

      Buy some elastic cuff matching the color or elastic band and sew on the end.

    I have a very beautiful knitted cardigan, but it’s an L ( while I’m an xs) and I would love to be able to make it smaller on the sides and sleeves? Do you by any chance know how to do that?

      How cool!!!!! I would totally alter it to look a bit more modern. That way you don’t feel outdated & you can still rock the sweater!

    Cute cropped sweater 💚. I don’t have a sewing machine but would like to change a high low cardigan into a shorter, one length cardigan. Can I see by hand or is there a product I can buy to help with this prom? Thanks!

    Hey! I have this sweater witch i love exept for the neck line (sorry for my english) so i im looking for some tips to alter it, do you have any tips? Its a knitted sweater with big yarn like in this video but i can only find totorials like this one where they alter the botom of the sweater and not the neck. Thanks for any tips you may have.

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  Před 4 lety +2

      I would cut the neckline where you want it and then zig zag it to keep it from falling apart. Then turn it under and cover stitch it, put binding on it or zig zag the hem. Hope that helps! I will do a video for altering the neckline next!

    Is it just me or did you cut this an inch shorter than you should have? I think you should have measured up 5.5 inches, not 6.5? If I’m wrong I apologize. Love you anyway, you’re adorable and this was extremely helpful and inspiring.

      I wonder if you can hack that from a cardigan? You'd have cut open the side seams so you can sew the cardigan edges into the opposing side seams. Kinda tricky, but doable given the right sweater and some stay stitching prior to cutting.

    I wonder if I could take my sweaters to someone else who could do this.
    Like someone who does tailoring. I'm guessing that I can.
    I was thinking of getting something else altered and the reviews said they turned sheets into curtains. So I'm guessing that you can pay to get basically whatever you want done as long as it's something possible to do 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  Před 2 měsíci

      You can deff take your sweaters to a tailor and have them do this.
