  • Hart Square Village is a collection of 103 log cabins and buildings which have been preserved on 200 acres in Vale, North Carolina by Dr. Robert Hart III. This collection of historical structures is the largest in the United States with build dates ranging from 1760 to 1890. Buildings include barns, a tavern, a chapel, a schoolhouse and many others creating a unique village nestled around the lakes on the property. The majority of the buildings are from a 22 mile radius of the location, with the first cabin arriving in 1973. Hart Square hosts events and classes throughout the year which showcase and teach colonial and pioneer era life.

@Mike Collon Yeah, I'd have ZERO problem with that. She's one of those oddities in that at least for me, hearing her voice just makes me feel calm. Looked up more information on her on the web site for the facility, sadly for us single guys... she's married. LOL. Cudos to the very lucky man that made that happen. Thought I saw a ring on the left hand. Couldn't agree with you more Mike, she's a stellar example of what makes a woman feminine.

*The grinder is indeed a "Tobacco Shredder" for "role your own". Variants included a herb grinder and in cold storage ( Ice house ) a meat grinder although they were lined with metal eventually giving way to a foundry cast model. The disks on top ware weights of course, although they did not attach to the wire side holding the product pan ! LOL! Great stuff you folks do!*

I met Dr. Hart numerous times over the years and he was the kindest most sincere person you could ever know. So glad your putting this out for all to see what a wonderful preservation job he did over his lifetime..it’s a true legacy for Dr. Hart!

I’ve worked at the Hart Farm for over 50 years, either as child labor, Scout labor, building disassembler/assembler, and now as one of the periodic docents of the Gun shop demonstrating how firearms were made in the foothills of Appalachia.
The Hart Foundation opens to the public once a year with all of the shops, stores and mills working to illustrate what it was like in the 17th and 18th century.
100’s of neighbors, friends, and amateur experts come together from all over to make it possible to demonstrate the skills and crafts that were needed during that period of time.
I’m partial to the gun shop but cotton gin, grist mill, chair shop, wheelwright shop, black smith and tin smiths are all my favorites, but there are over 100 homes, shops, stores, churches, even a fort to explore and learn about.
It’s a wonderful place to experience.
You must have tickets to visit but it’s worth it. I’ll see you there.

Where did the 'lace' making 'originate'. There is carrickmamcross lace from co monaghan Ireland. The local museum has an exhibition on lace making. Honiton lace from Honiton, Devon. The square tin for biscuits is known here as a 'tin' of biscuits. A 'half tin' of biscuits is a foot square tin half the depth of the square box. Most grocery stores kept 'ledgers' as customers bought 'goods on tick'. The local grocer literally kept the whole community 'alive' until they got paid. Flour was also bought by grocers in bulk. It came in a large linen bag. The flour was then weighed out into 2lb bags of flour. The 'linen' that the bulk flour came in was then given to customers. Four flour bags were 'sown together' to make bed sheets for your bed. Smaller items like 'seeds', powders etc where normally kept in wooden drawers that sat behind the counter. The grocer would take out a scoop and 'scoop up' some seeds etc. He then made a 'poke', the same as an ice cream 'poke' from strong paper and he sealed the top of it. This is how all condiments were sold. Tea also came in large wooden tea chests. The tea was originally 'stored loose' in large semi circular 'tea bins'. These 'bins' had a large wooden lid and the semicircular lid folded back to let you 'scoop out' the tea which would be put into a paper bag and weighed on the scales. Bacon was also 'hung up' on large hooks along a high bar above the bacon slicer. Bacon was cut off to the required thickness required and wrapped in 'grease proof' paper. String used for 'tying up' the paper bags hung in a spool from the ceiling. A skilled grocer could 'wrap up' a 'parcel' and 'snap off' the string with one hand. Cheese, usually cheddar cheese, came in a large 'block' the size of a cement block. The grocer sliced off 'blocks' of cheese using his 'cheese knife'. With experience they knew how to 'cut off' the correct weight of cheese. In weighting tomatoes, the grocer knew what number of tomatoes he needed to get the 'correct' weight. Do you have a set of scales with a needle that 'tells the weight' of items? Thank you for this video.
