  • The shot was taken at kanha tiger reserve, India. It was a tourist safari and when Tiger and Gaur (Indian Wild Cattle/ Buffalo) coming in same frame it was expected something but it was seen a strange activity in which Wild Cattle/Buffalo (Gaur) was seen chasing a tiger and tiger ran away for life. It is too strange as same tiger killed almost same size wild buffalo just one day before; see the kill • Fresh wild cattle (gau... . It shows that tiger like ferocious carnivore also avoid unnecessary conflict. The tiger have food for about a week and was focusing on drinking water that is why it avoided gaur for direct conflict. In this case tiger was not in need to kill it. The male wild buffalo also seems to do it for impressing female gaur which was coming behind of it.

He who fights and runs away, may live to fight another day. All carnivores understand this concept better than most humans. Just because they need to hunt other animals for food, direct confrontation is last thing on their mind, as they know all too well that serious injury will inhibit their ability to hunt. And we all know that the objective for all creatures first and foremost is to survive. Generally only a desperate or already injured carnivore would take unnecessary risks.

Gaurs make up more than 52% of the Bengal tiger's diet: photos.app.goo.gl/tM1GWig5gt3qxeo9A
Males killed at max weight was 1 ton. There is the Dehi account of an old (13 years old) 1,000 kg' gaur that successfully survived a tiger attack with only a few bloody gashes on its back, but this is a different story. I think that's enough to say a tiger can kill a tiger, though face to face I'd say the Gaur is more likely to kill the tiger.

I want to point out cats as predators hunt using stealth as the foremost mechanism. A gaur is a very strong animal and when the prey like gaur is cognizant of the presence of the predator and is in fact charging towards it there is a likely scenario it may end of maiming the cat badly or even kill it with its horns. So it was wise of the cat to just dash away.

      Alfie Bell
      - Why do you feel slighted because of lion fanboys?
The majestic tiger does not need to be defended by ridiculing it's rival-(in human eyes, that is), just as the mighty lion does not need to be compared with a totally different creature. Both are marvelous in their unique ways/styles.
It's like comparing albertosaurus & tyrannosaurus, as the winner will be the one who gets the first good bite...always debatable when dealing with two very large, deadly animals. One day the lion, another day it would be the tiger.
I've seen fighting when the smaller of the two (same-species) would win, because the attitude was different.
Everything in the wild is circumstantial...and this is an animal reserve.
In captive situations, when tiger & lion were thrown-in together, the results were flawed at best, as both animals only wanted out of the ring, and fought according to how close together they were.
These are not in-the-wild, so to speak, as this is a human controlled area.
Bottom line: Lion & Tiger are both awesome creatures, and each unique.

I've observed this behavior between tigers and a gaur in Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India in 2014. A single gaur approached at least two tigers at a water hole and the nearest-to-the-gaur tiger rather lazily trotted away, looking back over its shoulder during the retreat. The gaur persisted advancing aggressively in the big cats' direction and both tigers unhurriedly retreated into the tall grass adjacent to the water hole and could not be seen. The last I saw of this scenario on the day it occurred was the gaur looking boldly into the grass, no doubt trying to see where the tigers had gone. We returned to this water hole the next day to find these tigers feasting on a gaur kill. Don't know if it was the same gaur we had seen the evening before. But the result does illustrate that the tigers can certainly kill the gaurs. And, of course, very large, healthy gaurs (which have an all-muscle appearance and can weigh as much as 3,000 pounds each) have been known to kill a tiger with their horns and just plain brute force. The behavior I see here in this video seems reminiscent of the 2014 Kanha experience. The tiger trots away from the gaur and is not especially intimidated by it (not how quickly the tiger returns to drinking water in this video). I am guessing that this is the general reaction of tigers to gaurs. The general tiger behavior in a gaur confrontation can perhaps be summarized as follows: the tiger retreats from this potential food source, the gaur, when it is either not hungry or assesses that a gaur kill attempt is disadvantageous (and perhaps too dangerous) at this time.

    • @praddiemurrg

@@dabomand9827 Lions don't 'exist' in multiple continents but they existed. If you are counting Asia due to a few hundred left in Gir sanctuary of India (my country by the way) that's hardly a decent representation for the largest continent on earth. Also Indian lions were on the brink of extinction which were turned around after much external protection and intervention from humans. They are real delicate darlings. This lion who once roamed in entire Asia, Europe and Africa to be now restricted to Africa is an indicator that they aren't such a successful species after all. If you consider loss of habitat, tigers will defeat lions hands down. Tigers' loss of continent = 0 (All along Asia has been their home turf and so is it now)
Lions' loss of continent : 2 ( Europe, Asia notwithstanding those few hundred Indian lions of Gujarat with lot of VIP treatment)
If you talk of coexistence with big reptiles as an indication of their strength, well tiger territory is teeming with Crocs. Your lion drinks water from a river full of crocs. There are a few well documented cases of Tigers killing crocs (czcams.com/video/J-bZc_bLVtk/video.html) but a male lion with back up couldn't even make the croc budge forget about killing it single handedly. czcams.com/video/1hwkxJOl1PY/video.html . If you consider per head hunt success ratio tigers, leopards and jaguars will clock a higher score than lions. But I do love lions too. I really want both species to thrive. Just stating facts.

Gaurs are not Buffaloes, they're related to cattle.

No wild animal kills wantonly without purpose and in excess of its needs.. in this case the tiger is fully satiated and needs only to drink water.
Hence it moved away from the approaching gaur to avoid conflict. The gaur too having shown off to the admiring female just turns it's back and ignores the tiger.
Everyone is happy and content...the scene is one of peace and Co existence.
Is there a lesson for us humans in this ??

Only the biggest male tigers can kill a gaur that too female.
No tiger can kill an adult male gaut
