  • 13 days across the Balkans on two offroad-orientated bikes (Suzuki DR650 SE and Yamaha Tenere 700) along the TET (Trans Euro Trail) with most nights spent outside in the tent. It was an awesome adventure!

    So last year I made a new friend and he’s also into adventure motorcycling. We spent a weekend riding in the Slowenian forrest together. I was on my brand new Tenere 700 and he was rocking his trusty DR650. Back then we decided to go on a longer trip together. This video is about those 13 days in the Balkans.Our journey started back in Slowenia, but further west at the magnificent Soča valley outside of the local National park. We quickly wanted to leave our local temperate climate and enjoy the European south. So we took a ferry from Italy to Greece and wanted to head back up north from there.We arrived late in the in the afternoon and obviously wanted to stay at the beach for the night. With some searching we found the perfect spot at the Albanian coast. Clemens had a chance to ride on sand for the first time. The next day though It was time to head into the rough Albanian mountains. It was good to be riding again and we quickly synced up with our riding speed. Following the Trans Euro Trail we found a nice spot next to a canyon with an improvised open air pub close by. Clemens checked his air filter and had to so some adjustments to his speedo. Even our second night in Albania was guaranteed to be comfortable, because we slept on sandy ground again. The next day we reached Gjerbes, a town that I remember very well from the last time I’ve been to Albania back in 2014. It looked pretty similar from what I remember. Back then the people in Gjerbes helped me greatly when my BMW had a major mechanical issue and had to be transported to the next bigger town. Close by there is a river bed that you can follow for about 20 kilometers. The water level was low. It was the middle of sommer. But we managed to loose the tracks at times, which meant that my 200plus kilo T7 would have to truly go offroad. When we reached the Ohrid region the weather started to change and we were on a loop that is known to be the most difficult part of the Albanian Trans Euro Trail. Conditions weren’t ideal. But it’s all part of the adventure and in the evening the rain subsided. My side stand switch broke on a rock unfortunately and it was getting late. Because we were told that there are bears in the region, we were offered the opportunity to sleep next to shepherds high up in the mountains. They had motion sensors and dogs to keep their animals save. At night they offered us fresh goat milk. The day starts early if you’re a shepherd, so we too were woken up at sunrise and continued on the TET north…. We were in proper groove now. We had a proper shower and our laundry was clean again. It was amazing what the mountains in Montenegro had in store for us.Our time for this trip was slowly starting to run out. We were in Bosnia and headed towards Mostar. There I found new brake pads, which badly needed replacement. This was our last day of riding together. I needed to head back to Austria. While Clemens wanted to meet up with his girlfriend at the coast, I headed home directly. It was truely an awesome adventure.

    Great to see you back in the saddle (albeit not on the old DR ...). I’ve always been an admirer of your vids, but with your drone work you’ve taken your craft to a new level - without losing your penchant for understated commentary...
    Coming from Southern Africa, this vid, and some of your earlier work, evokes the specialness of the Eastern European mountain areas - something we don’t associate with the first world...
    (And as a long time rider of the DR 650 i’d Love to see a vid outlining your own transition from the DR to the T7...)

      Nowadays there are so many options on the ADV market.. It depends on how frequently you wanna ride offroad and how much you want to push it on more difficult trails.. All the best!

    What a great trip and wonderful content. How are you liking the T7 on the more difficult off road sections? It seemed like you were feeling the weight compared to the old DR. I ride a fairly light weight dual sport on my adventures but have never tried the bigger bikes. Cheers from America.

    • @ATasteofFreedom
      @ATasteofFreedom  Před rokem +1

      You surely have to be more careful with the T7 on slow stuff compared to the DR650 or the 690 Enduro. You have to keep your balance. I think it all depends on your priorities in the end. Fast stuff though works really well on the T7, at least in Europe, maybe not so much in Baja I don't know. The bike generally feels really refined. It think it all boils down to one vs. two cylinders.. All the best!!:) Max

    I don't have much experience on offroad, what would you recommend to start with?
    Would you consider the Montenegro TET being more enjoyable (easier, better views) ?
    Thank you and greetings from Moldova

    • @ATasteofFreedom
      @ATasteofFreedom  Před rokem +2

      If you want to go offroad and you know how to ride motorcycles in general, I would recommend bikes like the DRZ400 or the WR250R because they are much more forgiving offroad than adventure bikes. If you ride the T7 offroad you always have to be on the balance point. You can't really save it, if it starts to tip. All the best! Max

    Epic riding spots, Eastern Europe has some truely amazing places and it seems very accessible and open to exploring.
    Just out of curiosity, does your mate with the DR 650 have any issues riding around Europe with a non standard exhaust, to me it sounds sweet but I have heard that many European countries are clamping down on noisy exhausts.
    I only ask because I want to ship my DR 650 over to Europe but I do have an after market exhaust that is louder than the original, which would not be surprising as the original is so quiet anyway, but just to be on the safe side maybe the standard exhaust might be the best option.
    Love your vids by the way. 👍👍👍👍👍

    • @martij30
      @martij30 Před 2 lety +2

      I can't speak for ALL European countries, but in most of them, as long as you behave (so, don't redline through a family neighborhood at 3 AM) the police will not bother you very much.

    • @rideyourbike
      @rideyourbike Před 2 lety +2

      Hi, Europe is made up of 48 countries and some states (eg Vatican, San Marino, Andorra, etc.).
      Each country has its road laws which may be different from another country, eg: offroading is prohibited in Germany and in some areas of Spain, but you can go offroading in Poland and Portugal.
      Laws may also differ from region to region within the same country.
      And be different depending on the time of year, for example: off-road traffic may be prohibited in summer.
      And the location, for example: prohibition of driving on beaches, in protected parks or wildlife sanctuaries, wild camping, etc.
      As you will be subject to different laws regarding:
      1.- noise (eg: it is forbidden to make noise between 10:00 pm and 7:00 am. The time depends on the country);
      2.- compliance of the vehicle with the Registration Permit (eg: tire sizes, homologated exhaust, lights, engine number, frame number, etc.);
      3.- driving on motorways, national roads, within towns, off-roads and private roads.
      Fines are high and paid on the spot. It might be better (and cheaper!) not to run the risk of being fined for not complying with the Registration Permit (eg: without the original exhaust, tires with different sizes, lights without EC type-approval, etc.).
      Right now there is a war in Europe (Russia has invaded Ukraine). Meaning there's a shortage or delay of products and/or price increases, greater police control at the borders, large numbers of war refugees from Ukraine in transit, an increase in “stop operations” on the roads/highways, etc.
      So, IMHO the advice I give you is:
      1.- Check that EVERYTHING on your motorcycle conforms to the original model (with Registration Permit);
      2.- Find out about the laws of each country or state you want to visit, before starting your trip (contact the Embassy or Consulate);
      3.- Get the necessary Visas in advance;
      4.- Check if the tires your motorcycle has now can cover the distance you want to do. If not, ship a set of tires to the nearest “DHL” where they could be needed (eg: half the way). There is a lack of tires and prices have risen a lot (breakdown of the logistics chain, lack of containers, inflation, you name it).
      5.- Bring the air and oil filters and spark plugs with you.
      6.- If you want to go offroad, do not disturb (the local population, livestock or wildlife) or destroy plants or agricultural crops. Close the gates. Stay within the authorized trails or marked on the map (or GPS). Unfortunately, there are still vandals who do everything to make it completely forbidden to go offroad in Europe…
      7.- The colors and the name of the gasoline (or petrol) vary from country to country and from gas station to another gas station. Gasoline that is blue at the brand “A” gas station may be colored green at the “B” brand fuel station. Gasoline is the same (95 octane), but the color changes.
      8.- Countries to avoid at this time of war in Europe: Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Moldova, Romania, Poland, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
      You are able to receive other advice, such as: "relax", "everything will be fine", "don't worry", "the police are friendly and forgive you everything because you are a tourist", etc.
      But remember who will pay the fines, it will be you. With your money. It's better be safe then sorry.
      Ride safe.

      And just to add to the confusion I will have an Australian registered bike with a British passport, even though I am an Australian resident so I have the 90 day visa restriction also, but I guess that is all part of the adventure.
