So far best advice I've gotten from you is kneeling on your own toe of boot to avoid kneeling on rocks or mud. Life saver plus helps balance haha.
I’m glad you like that one. It saved my knee and before long it’ll become second Nature. and when you leave work, your knee won’t even be dirty.
Great video's. I have been welding now for 50 years and have truly enjoyed your videos. I still have an old Miller Thunderbold AC/DC welder that still works great that I bought in 1984. Anyways, way back when the Alaska Oil Pipeline was built, an old welder who worked on it gave me a bunch of welding rod they used when he came back to the lower 48. I don't recall the brand but they were 333 and 444 rods as marked on them. The 444 rods replaced the 333 rods because the 333 would crack once in a while he told me. I used the 444 rod all up about 25 years back now on excavator buckets and other heavy equipment. As I recall, it was the smoothest rod I have used, maybe to this day. The repairs seemed bullet proof too. The rods were 1/8 and seemed to be about 20 - 24 inches long or so too. Again... Excellent videos you have posted!!!!!
I have never heard of a 333 or a 444 rod that is very interesting. I would love to run one . specially if it was smooth.

Take the chuck key out of the chuck. It does not belong there unless it is in your hand at the same time..
6013 is rod used mostly (mostly) outside of the US in the developing world (or poor countries). They use it for EVERYTHING (including everything it shouldn't be used for). I know because I've travelled abroad over the last two decades and always liked seeing what kind of local welding was going on. It's invariably 6013 and sometimes 7018 but mostly 6013. What you'll never, NEVER see is a 6010.
Yes. I am from Eastern Europe, 6010/6011 are not even available. I'm not really sure what pipe welders use here for the root pass, probably 7018 on en. I only do light fabrication and mostly use flux core, t11.

@@TaylorWelding 6013 is kind of like 7018, but it penetrates less, the puddle is not as defined, and the tensile strength is less... but it does not require an oven.
Light penetration rod good thin metal and they used this rod alot overseas in the pipe industry
@@bgs4896 I'm European, but I don't really know the procedures for pipe here... I've heard that some weld pipe with only 7018, but the root on dcen. Do you know details about how they do it?

Also make sure you eat and drink, and don’t drink caffeine, nicotine doesn’t help thought I do vape, some drugs might make it worse also. Last thing, I know getting your hand further down the stinger gives you more range of motion, and keeps your hand away from the heat when your rod gets small, but the lower your hand is on the stinger, the more leverage you have so the end of the rod will move more with small movement or shakes with your hand. Sometimes choking up on the stinger can help. And stay calm don’t get frustrated
Taylor I am not a welder but welding with a stick is interesting to me , you explain it well , and today I learned why I never tried welding for a living , I dont like traveling that much .

A guy on eBay had a nos 300 amp stubby so I bought it.
Practiced a little with and I looked like a monkey messing with a football getting the rod in and out.
Gonna take a little practice but I liked it.

I just got a cheap Chinese stick welder from Amazon for like $90. I'm not looking to become a fabricator or anything like that. I have little to no previous welding experience, but I want to be able to fix/repair/build little things around here on the ranch without having to hire a professional welder to come out for a 10 minute solution that costs me $150.
I fired up my little Hone welder today and just played with it on my makeshift setup using a bunch of scrap steel I bought from the local scrapyard, and was very impressed with how the little welder performed even with my limited knowledge and experience. I was able to run a respectable bead across some flat steel, then cut a couple of 5" pieces of 3/4" square tube with a 45 degree miter joint. Was able to tack the joint using a magnet to hold the pieces at a perfect 90 and then go around the joint and make it strong.
I blew through the outside of the joint and learned how to fill in the gap with some pretty sketchy methods of arc-puddle-wait, arc-puddle-wait, and ended up with a terrible looking joint that was at least strong and solid, and I can grind it down and it will look pretty decent.
I decided to google, "how to keep my welding rod from wiggling", and ended up here. I had NO idea that you could steady the rod with a finger, and was a little stymied by the fact that the shake in my hand was translating into a 1"+ wobble at the end of a new rod.
So far, I'm pretty happy with my first day of welding, and even though I've managed to weld my workpiece to the table, my vise grips to the table, my magnet to my vise grips, my welding rod to every damned thing, and at one point, my rod to my ground clamp (THAT was exciting), I'm getting it figured out.
Welding is something that was always a mystery to me. I've done just about every other type of craftsman work across multiple industries, but I've never really liked working with metal. I'm really looking forward to getting better at this, and I'm happy to have found your channel to help me with that.

And, relax your hand. I have shaky hands but by holding the stinger gently I freehand most stuff. Tensing your hand transmits a lot of shake to the stick.

6013 is a high penetrating rod that can be pulled with light oscillation. It actually welds really smooth!
i like to use the clamp stingers with 7018 cuz i can choke up on the rod by braking off alil of the flux and clamp on to the rod a couple inches in so the rod is shorter and stops the wiggling
Hey Chris I’m a senior in high school and I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of weeks and have learned a lot. I recently bought a 1972 red face SA 200 for my first welding machine and have been practicing 6010 and 7018 everyday after school for a couple hours in all positions. I’ve been having trouble running 1/8 and 3/32 7018 vertical. My puddle keeps falling out no matter my arc length, adjusted heat up and down but to no avail. Could it be bad/older rods? Any help would be appreciated.

I just purchased a 400 A stinger holder similar to the black one in this video, but a cheapy. Right away the rod holding part doesn't impress me the rod is not very tight unless I mess with it over and over like the opening is too wide or the clamp pieces too smooth. Any suggestions? I have all 3/32 rod BTW. Enjoy your videos and I am a tig guy learning stick just for the hell of it.

Hi Chris! I have the very same stubby rod saver that you like. It was given to me. I cannot figure out how to connect the cable to it. It has a "bullet point" and a threaded sleeve in the handle where the cable connects. There are no set screws or any of usual, self explanatory cable attachment means and it doesn't have any instructions. Am I making any sense? Thanks.

6013 runs weird. It is very prone to porosity, and it does not penetrate much at all. I don’t like it at all. It runs nothing like a 7018 or 6010 it’s different than both. I can’t remember if it’s ac but I know you can run on DCEP
Question I have checked all my welding supplies and none of them have welding leads, I don’t know the best types of lead I have black leads but they are used and really old, and I was wondering what are the best leads and what size wire would you go with
But we only have two welding supplies to be fair
Number one is what I’ve been using. But I ran 01 for a long time . The bigger leads last longer, but I don’t use a whip so I chose the number one.
Has anyone used something similar to a tig finger to hold the rods steady?
I couldn't find any of those. I didn't here you say the name of it until now (I've skipped around on your videos), but went looking for one as soon as you showed it to us. Do you have a source? Oh-out of production-damn.
Not finding any of those I bought a twister by ESAB, it's a bear to get the "grip" off! Maybe I'll get it installed today. Funny thing--the only place I can find the ESAB stinger new is out of Ukraine on Ebay. I bought a "tested" unit (less $) .
ESAB doesn't list it at their site even. I sent them an inquiry.
I just got the ESAB Handy 300 apart. It has two big set screws for binding things up. It's not nearly so well designed as the Stubby-you showed us on another video. I'll find one of those, but right now I'm pretty excited to dump the el Cheapo stinger and try out the "Handy".
OH hell, Lenco makes one too. Guess i'll get 'em all. I ran the Handy 300 today, love it. Just got to get used to twisting. Improved my practice area my beads are looking better faster all the time.
