  • Welding for the most money?!I wish I knew what I know now. They pay ungodly amounts of money for these projects. For example: I did a platform and cage for an air unit suspended at 42 feet in air off of a hanger ceiling. This was a 3 day job with a helper. Normally this would have been a 4000.00 or so job in the outside world. These guys paid me 14,800.00 labor only, I pay for the consumables for the project. They provide all the materials and equipment except rig and pay for any food and lodging expense. Amazing. So now this is what I do and forget the pipeline. I get one maybe two jobs per month and most of them are one day or two day deals. Being on call out for emergency repairs (like a cut water main) was a 30 min fix and a 2 hour drive at 9:00pm. They paid me 4000.00 for it.
So this is what your guys need to do:
First: call the base nearest you and go online and find the phone number for the MICC (military installation contracting command) This is the same for army, airforce or navy and marines. (Airforce pays the best)
Two: ask to speak to a contracting officer (any will do but they are not the brightest..gov workers!) Ask for a list of the contractors who have contracts on that base and their contact information. They have to give it to you since its public info. The secondary way is to go Sam.gov website and can punch in the base you are looking at and it will (or should) pull up the awarded contracts for that base along with the companies and contact info
Third: Reach out to each individual company and sell yourself to them to be a welder at military bases. This is the hard part. Go see them, bug the shit out of them until they give you an opportunity, Squeaky wheel gets the grease! Once you get one general contractor to give you a contract then it opens up the doors to all the others. A tip to do when your on base doing the project is to find out who the government contract officer is for that project and go visit him and have him come see your work and totally kiss his ass--because he is the key to all the other projects on that base. That is what happened to me and he got me in with 12 other general contractors that he was overseeing their projects.
Fourth: when bidding these jobs-most gov contractors will already have a budget in place for the welding project. Always and I mean Always ask them what their budget number is for the labor on the project and that you are a labor only welder. You dont want the liability of providing material. If they say you have to- then walk away. I did that once and they called me back 3 days later and said they would provide materials.
Fifth: This probably should have been first. You have to have the ability to get on military bases. Cant be a felon or have any criminal history. If you think this could be a problem then go to any visitor center at any military base and they can run a background on you to see if you can get on. If you pass then go ahead at that time and get yourself a one year pass to the base. This is a good selling point to the general contractors and you can also go in to the base and go to the MICC and meet the contracting officers and get your name passed around. Many ways to skin this cat.
Sixth: Also should have been first. You have to be at least a 6G certified welder licensed

You guys with the fabrication line of pipe welders making $100,000.00 A YEAR AND MORE IS BOGUS, , THE HOURS AND ALL THAT HAS TO BE PUT IN TO MAKE THAT IS OUTRAGEOUS. I'M AS DEDICATED AND HARD DRIVING AS THE BEST OF THEM BUT THE MONEY YOU GUYS TALK ABOUT IS FALSE!!

do you weld pipe? Pipe that has to be x-rayed .
Can you weld fast and efficient?
Do you own your own rig?
You should be careful calling people liars. Educate yourself first before you look like a fool.

lot of people in Oklahoma call that an Oklahoma steam card. I had one until last year. It was high pressure pipe and used to be high pressure vessel too but they took that out and now it is just high pressure piping. I got mine way back in 79 and kept it current until last year. I am 67 and retired so no need to keep paying the $25 a year fee.

When I was 20 years old back in 2015, my college welding instructor got hooked up with a contractor that was renovating a couple barracks on Fort Jackson in SC. Carothers was the contractors name based out of Mississippi. Well I was there to fab up new handrails on the job and install them, because they, of course, busted the old ones up ripping all the old stuff and junk out of the building. I was the only welder there. They were actually running way behind about to blow past the set budget and schedule. They treated me like I was the saving grace. Cause boy were they in a bind. The Gf and site super thought I could weld steel to concrete lol... no like they actually asked in full confidence if I could. That's about how much they knew about welding. I worked for the contractor directly and they paid $30 an hour which was great for me at the time, but knowing what I know now I would've pushed in with my own freshly made LLC and got subbed out by them. They did require me to have a certification, they accepted AWS, luckily my high-school instructor had his inspectors license and got us kids certified on open root plate tests mig, tig, and stick, which was good enough to satisfy them. Being it was just hand rails I think they just needed to have something on file. Anyways, I was just a young man then still figuring out the construction world, but I saw the job all the way thru and put out good work, made 'em happy, and that's something to be said for anybody looking to get into this. Sorry for the long story, but just adding my experience with working on a base, maybe it'll help somebody out there!

Curious to know what other administrative requirements are usually involved like certain dollar amounts of Insurance policy requirements and such. I've done a couple real small jobs for one of the maintenance contractors here on post and would love to be able to get into more! Thanks for the information!

Los Angeles has a regional certification as well... LADBS (Los Angeles Dept of Building & Safety) certification. Similar to D1.1, Vertical and Overhead V- groove on a 1" plate.
If you have that cert you are pretty much good to weld in all southern California and surrounding counties like San Diego, Ventura, Kern County and tons of military bases out here.

I’m currently doing most of my work doing repair work on small lawnmower decks. I’m not anice that type of work, but trying to provide for my family seems difficult while doing that stuff.
