      So this is a big yes but also an aside: Vassals can't join factions while on your council and all vassals get a big opinion modifier for wanting to be on the council. Advisors(for kings and above) should always be a strong vassal to keep him on your side. If things are sideways I often have my whole council except spymaster as vassals, even if they're poor quality. I've held Byzantium together through some pretty sketchy times using my council properly. Spymaster should always always always like you alot, import people and give them gifts and titles, it's the only office I wont compromise on because I've woken up with too many snakes in my bed.

    I know I’m late to this but...
    To conquer counties you have a claim to without wrecking the county and losing it’s taxes while it rebuilds simply take war focus, antagonise the current ruler until you can duel him and duel for a strong claim. If you win you take everything without a wasteful war. Start with the territory of the ruler with the weakest personal combat score and work upwards; by the time you’re reaching the harder duellists you should have the skill to win. This is also a quick cheap 50 prestige.

Try making good relations with foreign realms and get pope involved then you can start an invasion in which you'll be able to invite christian rulers as allies or try to get holy war events.

    #9 Have At least one Duke-Bishop so you can fit a "Powerfull vassal" as court chapelin,he will also be very loyal
    #10 When getting the event to build a hedge garden,don't take any decisions that require money,you will be rewarded with same things without spending any money.
    #11 Don't build a great tower,not worth it.
    #12 Assaign every honorary title to every vassal(especily barons) so they get more money out of it.
    #13 The success of trade expedition depends on your relations with the ruler you visit,so you don't have to buy him the best gift if he arleady likes you.
    #14 Rulership focus sucks becose it gives you stressed trait way too often
    #15 War focus isn't bad but Hunter is much better
    #16 Bennedict order is underrated and allows you to add one of your virtues to your sons or remove one of their sins,you will also get an event to steal an artifact like "Finger of Jesus" or something like that,a powerfull item that dosen't need to be equiped
    #17 When playing encountering an event where a pilgrim comes and needs a home,he might be the actaul death! So check him if he has game master trait,if he does then it's confirmed that you are being visited by death to challenge you to chess.You have higher chances to win that chess game if you let him stay at court or buy him a room in tavern,also picking black peaces will improve chances too. Rest is luck but you arleady have an upperhand.
    #18 "Raise Tribal Armies" will be removed in Holy Fury and replaced by "Tribal Retinues" according to the devs.
    #19 Don't land people as counts in your capital duchy if you are King/Emperor.
    #20 Don't marry your dauthers for prestige(unless you are a merchant republic),instead marry them either for a strong ally or martinel marrige to expand your dynasty.
    #21 DEUS VULT!

    Always when playing as Byzantium, bump up city taxes and conquer and vassalise Venice. That way you can milk them for all the money they're worth(which in 50 years when most of the trading posts are built is a ton). Plus, with the extra honorary titles and the advisor council slots to cancel any opinion hits upon ruler change you can easily make a lot more money than normal earlier in the game. This is handy because you'll basically be wearing the Seljuks and Fatimids until you conquer them outright and countering the financial edge they get from the Silk Road with your own Mediterranean trade dominance will be of immense value.

    • @Jame5man
      @Jame5man Před 5 lety +1

      A quick way to get to Venice is through the Serbian dukes and the incredibly poorly situated Kingdom of Croatia as Venice will take their coastal cities and counties giving you free claims on them to weaken them. Since truces are between characters you just need to nudge the current Doge into the grave to quickly smash them. Another good early conquest is Wallachia which is controlled by the nomadic Pechenegs and thanks to new casus belli you can declare war without fear of the Cumans. Speed is key however as Hungary, Transylvania and a United Rus or Ruthenia will attempt to conquer the region as well.

    • @Jame5man
      @Jame5man Před 5 lety

      A good start for Poland in 1066 is to quickly(before you even advance in game) holy war Pomerania and Obotricia into oblivion and this will get you access to the North Sea and allows the creation of a potentially very profitable republic vassal(due to access trade posts in Flanders and Southern England). You need to be fast however as Denmark, the HRE, and Pruthenia will show ambition in these last Slavic duchies or the possibility of a untied kingdom of Pomerania that is less fun to deal with.

    The following is meant as a guide to make things easier, not stuff you absolutely must do in order to be successful:
    I typically start the game by putting my spymaster on steal tech from Constantinople, put my Marshal, Steward and Priest on study tech on my capital holding and within a single lifetime my capital usually becomes the most technologically advanced county in the game... as catholic though it tends to be really annoying because the Priest usually becomes a heretic quite easily so make sure you have lots of high learning people in your court and a few spare intrigue people in case your spymaster gets caught.
    Another thing I sometimes do is a power breeding program, basically I have my first character get 5 (or more) sons and each one is trained in a different sector (Diplomacy, Marshal, Stewardship, Intrigue and Theology) and I marry each of them with a woman with the highest level of that type I can get, then I keep that particular line of descendants focused on that in order to have a good backup for each position in case I need it. I also tend to try to make my marshal have plenty of children so I have a steady supply of competent commanders.
    Always hold two duchies, the two duchies with the largest numbers of counties ideally. Total current holdings are not as important in a long-standing game since you can always work towards getting new holding slots via an event. One example is when I play in Germany I will usually try to get Alemania and Saxony as my duchies. As someone pointed out below, don't give any of those counties away. This overall gives you a great power base and plenty of castles, usually more than your limit allows you to hold even if your Steward family branch happens to be your main.
    If you go over your holdings limit, give away your baronies to heretics and heathens so you can reclaim them later more easily when your stewardship improves.
    Never land your dynasty members and keep very strict control over them and their whereabouts to avoid claimant issues.
    Retinues are powerful but getting lots of troops this way requires high Military Org and a large empire, so don't bank on it becoming your main fighting force... unless you're Nomad in which case they literally are your fighting force.
    In a large empire, I find it optimal to have 2 or 3 really powerful vassals and a bunch of weaker ones. That way you only ever need to keep 1 or 2 vassals happy, everyone else will avoid trying to antagonize you too much. One example is as the Roman Emperor I will usually combine all of modern day France into a single vassal and all of modern day Turkey into another, this makes a really powerful vassal on either side of my empire and I can keep both of them fairly happy thanks to all the vassal opinion bonuses you get for being Roman Emperor (+25 total if you managed to get the Blood of Alexander as well as the Roman Empire Restored bloodline and Augustus trait). As a different empire, it's just a bit more expensive.
    Always try to max out your max number of Republic and Theocracy land ownership... Theocracies are surprisingly stable and will rarely revolt, especially in Catholicism with Free Investiture :) and Republics are a huge cash cow.
    There's lots more but I think I've written enough lol

    There seem to be a lot of people disputing about having more holdings in ones capital or having multiple counties.
    Here's my take on that.
    I tend to agree with Mah-Dry. Especially in the early game you'll want to be centralized and have all holdings in your capital. It allows you to have a huge levy. Normally it's big enough that you don't even need to bring all of it into your wars resulting in still having no problems at all with cashflow. Another advantage here is that your vassals can hate your gut and you won't give a damn since their factions never reach the point of actually declaring war on you since they're no dangerous.
    As you continue on your campaign there will however be a point where you can let loose of this centralization of power. It's usually when your vassals are big enough that you wouldn't have a chance fighting them anyway if all of them rebelled at once. At this point however it's technically indifferent where your holdings are and how much levy you get from them, since you tend to fight your wars using only vasall troops anyway.
    Some different tips as well:
    Any character can become a good one if you switch focus after getting your permanent buffs and without chosing lifestyle traits.
    Watch out for your commanders: Never pick slothfull, shy or tricksters if you have better options.
    Best retinue? If you want to fight: pikeman. If you don't: light infantry
    Invite commanders to your court with cultures matching your army composition. (e.a many pikemen? get an italian one)
    Never EVER go horse archers. They're garbage.
    If you are in an army watch out for epidemics in the country that army is in
    If you're catholic get the damn pope to be your vasall as soon as you can
    If you want to quicksiege get tons of HI and HC then you'll be able to storm with just 4-5x the enemy troop size (if army ~90% HI)
    If you have no commanders in your armies that are sieging you will not recieve negative siege events.
    just a few, could give more but most of them are kinda fast to get anyway.

      For clarification, I'm not saying to have all of your holdings in your capital, that's only ever going to be a maximum of 5 holdings because pretty much any land worth making a capital will start with a city and a religious building. It's pretty easy to get at least a demisen limit of 10 before 900 AD. Higher or lower depending on stewardship of course, but law wise you can get a really stable 10 as a king or emperor. You'll probably end up with every county in your capital duchy and have most of the holdings within those. More if you're muslim since you can personally hold mosques. No matter what you're going to end up with quite a few counties and thus city vassals under you.
      In my currently ongoing Mecca playthrough, even as an emperor with a demisen size that tends to go between 10 and 14, I always have about 5 counties even with me having most of my temples personally held.

    Tip for allowing more land; go gavelkind and Benidict order, have 1 kid then instantly turn celibate. Problem solved. You can also abuse this mechanic by creating a strong-genius god by taking celibate and then undoing it. Take stubborn, wounded lustful, lisp and deceitful for this extra bs. Your character will be 16 and you can wait for the genius characters to turn 16 while staying fairly young. (This is a high risk strat though)
    Also can take sturdy which often turns to brawny with hunting focus.

    I have to object at tip nr 1. I've been playing ck2 since sword of islam and I can tell you you can build whatever slot you want except Church or even a church if the county doesn't have it. Each type of constructon slot can give you an advantage. For example City vassals can provide you with more gold than an castle which is important early on or later in game, castles provide more levies but that can be compensated later on with improvements. Castles slots in my opinion can be at least 2 minimum in an province. Temple type city gives you Piety and prestige in the long run. The choice is to each player if they want to have either troops / money or / prestige or piety.

    Norse tips: 1. Play tall not wide in the early game (pre-900-1000ad or so). 2. Raid A LOT, that means get ship tech as EARLY as possible, before Viking age. 3. Buy your first Kingdom instead of conquering it (take 3 nearby duchies and then accumulate gold and prestige via raiding for a custom Kingdom, this shrinks your nearby de jure Kingdoms for conquest later), then conquer the next two Kingdoms that will be small for your Empire. 4. Create and Matrilinealy breed in bloodlines early! 5. Forge a religion, and give yourself raiding and the ability to select your heir (you'll need Primo/ultimo). 6. I prefer feudal, but MR works too - expand out once you have few things to upgrade and are pooling wealth from raids. This strat is FUN with multiplayer.

    The capital province provides no tax bonus, actually. Only to levies, with a half bonus to the rest of the provinces in the capital duchy. So stacking castle baronies is a good idea IF you want to maximize levies. If you want to maximize income, pick a coastal province and stack cities in your capital and use the steward action. The capital can have other bonuses to income though from events, also the crown focus and prosperity, etc.

    ad #2, actually, building many castle holdings in your capital holding will only help you early on and really hinder you later. You want to own only the top holding and have the rest free slots filled with cities for that sweet cash you'll need to maintain your levies and replenish/build new retinues. Max tax shifted burger law is a MUST!!!

    • @MahDryBread
      @MahDryBread  Před 5 lety +2

      I disagree. On my Mecca playthrough that's active on my channel, you can see me making almost exactly 1000 gold a year with about half of it from 3 counties alone. Multiple personally owned castles that have both the capital bonus and collect tax steward bonus make a far greater impact than tax trickled up from vassal cities. On top of that, you also have a far larger army along with it.

    • @cromagnonac
      @cromagnonac Před 5 lety +1

      but that's mecca, you have silk road there, if you're somewhere in western Europe you're better off having 8-10 counties filled with cities and a merchant republic near so that they build a trade post there, you'll be swimming in ducats that way. It is true about the troops tho. But with that cash troops are not a problem.
      I guess it comes down to your position on the map, starting date and ultimately, your playstyle

    • @MahDryBread
      @MahDryBread  Před 5 lety +2

      I've done the same thing in northern spain where there isn't the silk road. At the most the money difference between castles you personally own vs tons of cities in counties you own where the city tax trickles up to you would be pretty minor, but you'd have far smaller personal levies and it's your personal levy and personal retenue size that will keep factions from actually declaring war on you. If all you're using is mercenaries, they'll declare constantly because as long as the mercenaries aren't currently hired, they'll just look at your levies and retenues and assume you're weaker than them, forcing you to constantly be at war with your own growing empire.
      Tip 2 is about levy size as well as income and how both are helped a ton by having lots of baronies in your capital county to get the most of the capital and counselor benefits. If you want a stable realm you're going to need a reasonably large personal army to keep your own disloyal vassals from banding together and Tip #2 is a very reliable way to get the most out of both your army and your money.

    • @MahDryBread
      @MahDryBread  Před 5 lety +2

      Regencies can be pretty brutal, especially if someone with a claim to the throne is close by and wants to murder you. First, bribe your regents. It sucks because you sometimes end up changing regents quite often, but it's important that they have your best interest in mind. A regent that's part of a murder plot against you is a really serious threat. It's also worth bribing your spymaster for the same reason.
      As for avoiding regencies all together that's a bit tricky. Inheritance law is often messy and sometimes you're unlucky, but in general if you have a simple inheritance law where everything goes to one person, just try to have tons of kids. Let's say you're primogeniture and your eldest son inherits everything. You want lots of kids so that if the eldest dies for whatever reason, there is likely to be a smaller age gap between him and the next eldest son.
      There is always the possibility other sons will try to raise up against you one day to claim the throne, but at that point it's more of a problem of realm stability and having a proper army to deter attacks like that.

      So there's two types of DLC, mechanics and cosmetics. You can skip every pack that is just units and music, they don't add anything but visuals that I personally like but the cost racks up. Mechanics DLC is much more important and will broadly expand the way you play the game. Of the Mechanics Update Sunset Invasion, Horse Lords, and Jade Empire are the easiest to ignore unless you specifically want to play a nomad and interact with China. Jade Empire also lets you write books w/ 8 learning and they can be very powerful artifacts but that's aside. Reaper's Due, Monks and Mystics are also very nice but not required, they add alot more flavour. Rise of the Republic is very Byzantine focused, I believe it adds the Mend Schism and Restoring Rome intrigue options. Charlemagne, Viking Age, Way of Life are all damn near required material if you want to enjoy the game. the 2 earlier starting dates triples your starting options and the way of life focuses are some of the most powerful options in the game. Holy Fury is a huge content dump and because I'm enjoying it so much I would say it's worth every penny. The Bloodlines alone are worth it for me, but the warrior lodges are excellent also. NOTE: if you play multiplayer with someone you use all of their mechanics DLC, so if I was hosting a MP game and you joined with just the vanilla game you would use all my DLC except the unit/music pack visuals. Steam has a ck2 MP chat that's easy to find and you can get into various discord groups from there, happy gaming!

    Not having that clunty means crippling yourself by not having access to another county's worth of universities or hospitals.
    Instead of castles, choose a capital with as many oprn spots as youcan and build cities instead. You get more cash from the city taxes than if they were castle vassals, and you can also get universities.

      I love CK2, but it's a bit of a pain to learn. It's a game completely filled with really weird and obscure rules and mechanics. It's why it's a great game to stream, because if you get enough CK2 players in the same chatroom together, no matter how weird of a thing happens at least one person can explain it.

    pagan/tribal related tips are partly outdated, as tribals cant summon warriors for prestige anymore. its ok when this is an older video anyway, but seeing four choosable actions for each councillor, i think this video is from the holy fury era? then that part is definitely outdated.

    Number one is wrong actually, you can only reinvest once, after that the modifier wil expire and its gone.

    • @MahDryBread
      @MahDryBread  Před 5 lety

      I think you're confusing the event I'm talking about with a different one. Once you do the trade route quest line in Business focus and successfully set up the route, you'll be asked to pay 200 gold to keep the route going every time it's about to expire. You can watch me do this dozens of times between my playthroughs on this channel as Austarias and Mecca.
      I know it's a bit of a pain to look through the footage for it, but if it helps you find it I renewed the trade route in my most recent stream of CK2 two days ago. That means episode 100, 101, 102, or 103 will have me renewing the trade route.

    • @someonesilence3731
      @someonesilence3731 Před 5 lety

      Strange, i know what you mean but i always only get to choose to renew once, perhaps they changed it.

    • @MahDryBread
      @MahDryBread  Před 5 lety

      Maybe, I can't remember if there was ever a time when you didn't have an option to renew it so it's possible that it used to be not be that way.
      Out of curiosity, have you been playing as a Merchant Republic? Maybe during a time when you weren't leading the country, the active leader chose to end the route.

  • @ABluesColour

    Tip 8: almost ALL (99%) of Finish names and things are pronounced as written. Suomi is said ”Suo-mi”, suomenusko is ”suo-men-us-ko”, sampo is ”sam-po”. One exception is when the first word in a word made of two words (sunglasses, boxcar, etc) ends with a vowel and the secend one does not begin with a vowel. Example: hernekeitto is said ”her-nek-kei-tto”.
    It’s confusing. But it’s NOT ”sumen-usko”. Hearing that always makes me cringe.
