- This old barn was used as a gymnasium by an old school that no longer exists. Everyone says this old building can't be saved, but I'm going to do just that. Check it out!

For some reason one of the drone shots appears to have turned into a still image in the intro lol. Not sure what happened, but hopefully you "still" enjoy the video! Thanks for all the support and have a great rest of the week!
Thx for this note….i just finished the video and was coming here to ask about the drone shots. Other than the minor confusion (asked and answered), this was crystal clear on what you are planning and the steps you see taking initially. I’m no expert on what the steps involve but I do read people well and have a good sense (I call it my BS meter) for when someone is basically sound or freakin’ nuts. All I can say is that I’m on team Kleeman and believe in you. Let’s go!
You might want to consider doing a Y type bracing. This would keep the floor space clear of additional vertical post. Think of a traditional roof truss upside down attached to the existing center post. Use 3/4 plywood to make gussets to connect.
Yup, the drone footage is definitely stationary.😂🤙
@@richm487 I think the floor concern is factored into the long term plan. If your “Y” scenario is also factoring this in, kindly outline some major milestone steps that go along with it. Additionally, I’m sure he will be interested in looking at material viability for reuse (in comparison) because he is a big fan of stretching the dollar. Now that he has a dry space with easily separate areas, he will inventory but prefers parts that get better turnover.
@@richm487 it would also overload the central floor beam 👍
I work for a big civil engineering company in the UK, we manage major infrastructure projects. I can confirm that the quality and completeness of the technical drawings on this channel is greater than those we have access too. I'm excited for you and the opportunity's this building represents. Keep doing what you're doing fella.
Totally agree, just retired after working as an FM for 30yrs, I always dreaded taking over an older building as the plans were never updated when new wiring, pipework or structural changes were made. You'd spend at least a year finding out why and where changes were made, it's amazing how much stuff was done without any approvals whatsoever. 🤣😂
well that one was not very family friendly for a few seconds was it lol
You are very lucky to get this property. Exciting times ahead so you need to enjoy the journey. Cheers Steve
Captian to pull the concrete walls will take good cabling and good winches and proper wood or steel beams to hold every thing straight as you also slowly pull the tops in while also lifting the roof. My brother hired a man and his crew to do the same process on the 90 foot long x 44 foot tall x 45 feet to the peak of a barn built in the 1920's. It can be done with working slowly and listening to the building. Good luck and be safe. I enjoy your willingness to learn.
If you don't need the full ceiling height, I'd recommend adding horizontal supports just below where it is failing now. I'd use cable and turnbuckles so that you could make adjustments over time.
Cap’n congrats on your acquisition. It’s not the average CZcamsr who can grow from a small town, middle American flyover farmstead, into an internationally recognized World Wide phenom… in just a few short years!!
I mean, looking back… who’d a thunk that a Country boy could leverage a tugboat shaped yacht in the forest into an Internationally recognized brand worthy of a headquarters the size of gymnasium???
I must confess, I did not see that coming!!!
Regardless, Cap’n I applaud your vision and wish you the best as you see it through to your dreams. Keep dreaming bud…. I’ll keep watching!!!
Very well said. It is inspiring to see all of these content providers do good. Especially those that provide content without being edgy, vulgar and mouthy.
Reminds me of the old Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Tx. Back in the day, a great honkytonk! with Willie, Waylon and the Boys!
I love your positivity and optimism! This is a cool old building; and it definitely captures my viewing interest more than tossing up a new structure. Instead of This Old House, it will be This Old Barn!
maby even using some cables and turn buckles could help some also
SHE GOT THE BONES, HOPE ALL GOES WELL, IN TIME IT'LL BE QUITE A STRUCTURE, GOOD LUCK
On the plus side you probably will have this done quicker than …. Someone else’s stairs 😁 good job mike thanks for awesome content
Love the positive attitude and work ethic you bring, When you picked up that bell tower and found a way to make it into one of coolest pond side seats ever, I thought what else is this guy going to do ? Thank you for making these videos and Thank you for service in the Fire Dept.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. Looking forward to seeing every step of this headquarters renovation. A large space to work indoors is an amazing thing to have access to. I took Masonry class while in high school and my teacher had a very unique structure for his projects at home. Prior to WW1 the town started to put in public sewers and when the war happened they paused the project. After the war when the project was restarted the concrete holding tank was no longer sized big enough and was abandoned in place. He grew up playing around it and knew it was there. When he was older and the property went up for sale it sold for a great price because it had this huge block of concrete on it. He snapped it up, hired an explosive expert and blew a hole in one end to put in a roll up door. He built all kinds of projects inside it that he would tell us about. The biggest I remember was he prebuilt a house inside it made to come apart for his camp. It was a huge indestructible space coming out of the side of a hill. He used to say it was so big it had its own weather system inside and he had to be careful when he threw the door open to not get blown over. Wishing you and your family the best.
Good for you, Captain! Repairing/rebuilding/repurposing that is going to be quite a trip! But from what I've seen over the last few years of watching your channel, you most likely have all the skills, and if there are some you don't have yet, you'll figure it out. Thanks for sharing, take care.
I look forward to the growth of new World Wide Headquarters. I have had a similar experience what we did was to put straps around the main trusses which were hooked up to 5 ton come alongs. As we lifted as you will with bottle Jack's you also draw in the come alongs. When you achieve your lift the trusses are set. As a bonus you can leave the come alongs in place for extra support.
What an awesome project that you guys came across Mike! Sounds like this is going to help both you and DP. Can't wait to see the progress that happens with this building! Thank you for bringing us along on your adventure!!!
I absolutely love this new adventure! You always put a smile on my face! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY! SAFE NEW YEAR!
Yeah it’s really good kid. So proud of him and his wife public servants who do inside line work making much more. Pretty awesome
Glad you're growing. This project will be fun to watch come together. I live for your wacky, informative input. Onward we go.
Any other person proposing this project I'd say is nuts! But you Captain, I have no doubt the Kleeman world Headquarters will be magnificent!
Concrete for the doorways; don't forget some footer concrete. 13:00 don't forget to add some structure in the basement to take on the load of the planned main room supports (you can't just jack that up and land it on a basketball floor)!
What about using cable and turn buckles to help pull the sides in and stop it from spreading out any farther just a suggestion I’m not their to see but I know in some old barns I’ve been in they have had that in them
Mike congrats on the start of the Kleeman world headquarters, you sure have the drive and determination to get the structure back in shape, best of luck and stay safe !!!
Mike - I make sure my husband watches every episode. I want him to see what a real man is capable of…. 😉
Merry Christmas to y’all!
Looking forward to the future of your world headquarters mike so much space for activities
MIKE. Stop for a second. You didn't make allowance for the concrete that needs to go below the ground for your buttresses. You know you've got to dig down to the frost line for a footer.
Now that that's out of the way, I guess we can sit back and enjoy watching you work for the next several years. Wish I was young enough to come and pitch in to help you. Have a great holiday.
Thanks Mike, love your positive attitude and friendly nature 😊. What a great project…with a bit of sweat equity you’ll have a great space at a lot lower price than building new. The building does look like an upturned boat (minus the bow) so let the naming begin. My suggestion is Admiralty House. 😊
I thought the same, Ark of Derby! lol
27:00 Good plan! 90% would be awesome!! But it might take a year? Who knows? It will be interesting to follow. You could sell spots on a calendar to hit, say, 80%. Then send swag to the person closest. Make it fun, you always do!
Interesting build Mike. Almost thought you could turn the top floor into a workshop to work on your projects versus expanding the shed, funding multiple projects. Of course, you would have to strengthen the floor to allow vehicles on the top side. Also, I have seen a public building like this before and was wondering, instead of bracing the arches from top to bottom, adding addition posts in your open area, what about bracing the arches from side-to-side (Kind of like you see in framed roofs that are not prefabbed)? That way, you do not loose the space with permanent posts. Of course the bracing would prevent the arches from sagging side-to-side as well!
You might want to consider running steel cable between the walls. It’s not uncommon to find old buildings with steel bar tying the walls together.
Wow, Mike!!! This is going to be HUGE project, and I'll be coming along for the journey! Big thanks to DP for making this happen, and best wishes to you and your family for taking on this project. It's going to be AMAZING!!!
💪
Extra roof bracing might help but you really need something holding the walls from bulging any further. I’m not sure how the floor is attached to the walls, but it doesn’t seem to be providing this support.
Consider some cables running from wall to wall connected to steel running lengthwise on the outside of the wall.
Steve summers used that bottle jack technique for his shed. 🏴
Kinda hard to believe Dirt Perfect would let that gem go...
You know, one day you'll have something positive to say about my purchases, Wes. And it's a day I'll cherish forever.
@@CaptainKleeman I'm just jealous!
They used to put steel rods between the floors with steel plates on the outside to tie the walls together .
Your enthusiasm and ambition are great to see. This is going to be a fantastic series of projects and I look forward to following along.
The man has no fear! What a project!
Wow ,,I'm there with you Mike and Family ,,your videos are a light in this weird world. From Florida Merry Christmas.
Captain Kleemans World Headquarters. Heck yea.
Capt'n, this is going to be quite a project. I have a suggestion to help stabilize the building. An interest of mine are bridges. This idea comes from tied arch suspension bridges. This is where the road deck is used under tension to hold the ends of the arch from spreading. My initial idea is to run a heavy rod through the floor beams at each buttress. Anchor each end to the outside of the wall with whatever you need to insure (Matt's favorite word) it doesn't pull through. In the center the ends are threaded so you can connect them with a large turnbuckle. This way you can adjust the tension. Your roof is the arch. The rods are the tensioning road deck. This way the arch can not spread at the bottom.
In the old paper mill building that has been repurposed into the city offices for my home town of Plainwell, MI, I have seen this used in the ceiling beams. If you want to come up and see for yourself, I would be glad to show you around the Island City of Plainwell.
Capt'n, ponder this idea and let me know what you think.
Love your dream Captain.
Best of luck Mike and have a great at Christmas!!
20:30 "This is like the 'ran when parked' version of buildings" 😂😂😂
You are a busy man!! Cannot wait to see the renovations begin!
This is awesome, can't wait to see everything start happening! Y'all take care.
The future is bright and the possibilities are endless
Nice building Mike. I know you'll make it work Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year.
Awesome, Mike and family. When you started dismantling the trucks, I mentioned that you needed warehouse space. Little did I know that you had already solved that problem. Well done!
Ok, that is one of the best purchases you could have made. In the future, working inside, actually have lights, electricity, a good work bench. You are going to get spoiled. But you deserve it. My wife and I absolutely love watching your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thank you sir!
Amazing project Capt, can’t wait to see your progress 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Love your thoughts on this undertaking. Maybe it's time to move the shop projects here and utilize the electric access?😊😅
what about some cables from wall to wall to hold it together? in addition to the extra posts.
Played a lot of ball in that old gym weekends and after school. Lot of memories. Didn’t realize how bad of shape it’s in. Hopefully you can make it last a few more decades.
Added two pieces of property and now a large building for storage and whatever ya'll need. The best part, everything has some history!
Given Indiana’s history of basketball and how small town basketball is revered, I have to wonder if you could get some sort of historic preservation grant for that building if you can retain some of the original elements like the floor and backboard. I’ve seen some repurposed buildings still get preservation grants because they made an effort to retain some of the original character. Just a thought.
It's something I'm looking into. Would be cool
@@CaptainKleemanbut you might lose control as to how the building is used. That would suck.
Here's an idea! How about running cables from side to side up in the roof trusses with turnbuckles to try and pull the roof back in or at least stop it sagging any more?
Somewhat like you would put tie rods and plates through a building that is falling apart to stop the walls bowing.
In case you're not already aware, check out Steve Summers on CZcams. He's a machinist who had to rebuild his sagging shop, and the roof jacking process you describe is just about what he went through. I don't think he has it in a playlist, but many of the titles are like "damaged shop repair #X" If you start with "Leaning Block wall removal and Roof lift SHOP PT4" from three years ago you'll see at least some description of how he made jacking posts. Of course yours will be different, like maybe not dedicating a jack to every post to stay there. Maybe.
Hey Cap, look into putting in angle supports.should be able to carry the snow load to those center 6x6s just a thought.
Boy Howdy, ya got me intrigued I'll leave it at that for now.
I love these old, oddball buildings. I glad you are saving it.
Cables are commonly used on Quonset structures to tie the sides from outward movements . A combination of hydraulic vertical lifts and come along horizontal pulling forces should help rectify the structural integrity.
So much room for activities. Lots of work ahead, great to see you saving this old building.
My idea, the gym looks big enough for 2 stories. Build 2 stories inside reinforce the roof to that framework. Boom all the space you need.
But...but then I can't play basketball Steve 🤣
Hi Mike. At four digits, that sounds like a good price for the building with the size that it is. At, "Or less", as you say it gets better. I hope this is as much fun for you as it will be for me watching you save the building. Have good days!
Mike your right on track as you needed more space to work on stuff year round & a place to be out the weather to finish your current projects ! This is the game changer you needed all along ! It's going to help not only grow the channel but allow the rest your family to help on new projects & start learning how to be your own person make a living doing whatever you choose !
Pretty excited about it!
It’s the leaning gymnasium of Kleeman. Most would demolish it and build new. Not the captain. He’s sees the diamonds in the rough. I think it’s perfect for the channel.
I don't know too much about building structure and stuff like that but I do know that if you take the load off the top of the wall that wall may go back and then it would just be a matter of pulling the sides of the roof back together but before you set the roof back down on the wall yes you would want to reinforce the wall so it doesn't happen again but right there when the weight comes down on the wall That's the seems like so if you take the load off the wall and pull the sides of the roof back in then you'd be able to have a good building that would stand the test of time again it's just a thought I really enjoy your channel I like to things you do I like to comedy in it it really brightens my day when I see that you have posted a video so please keep keep up but like I said I ain't no construction engineering it's just what I've experienced through my life and what I've learned from my grandfather
Top stuff Captain. Looking forward to the progress
I'm behind you 100% captain, I will enjoy watching you accomplished another mission in your life !!!😊😊
This will be a cool project to watch.
It's definitely worth it man. You and the Admiral need more space and BAM there it is!!!
👍🇺🇲
Awesome! Great to see you growing. Just a thought . When u put the truss support maybe run them more at a barn roof style on inside with supports running to the original …. If you ever had plans to fully redo the building trusses you would be able to keep them as some of your new trusses and you would loose a little height. Can’t wait to watch 👍
You need to go to the city and look for some plans cause they’re bound to be some plans drawn up.
Just wondering: How far away is this from your house? I imagine if it's relatively far that it might be a barrier to actually do stuff? Yet again, it's healthy separating personal and work stuff.
I was thinking, as tall as the interior is. A second floor. That would give roof correcting strength. MAYBE?
With all the people that want new, old is the history of the town. In is worth fixing up. No matter what others say it's yours make it work for you.
Kleeman, I hope you can bend that roof to your will. Parts of me says just yank the whole roofing system off, straighten the concrete walls and engineer a new roofing system that will better carry the load out to concrete walls, which sounds like a whole lotta moola! It will be interesting to see this project move forward. Best wishes and Merry Christmas!
Excited about your channel thanks!
If enthusiasm counts it is as good as done. Congrats. Merry Christmas to you and the crew.
Hey Mike, You is one crazy dude! But certainly fun to watch! This should be pretty exciting! Thumbs up! Stay safe! Jim
Hay, Mike! It's great to see the vision! Noting ventured. Nothing gained! Looking forward to the next installment!
It appears to have a view of the river!! Location, Location, Location!
It does!
Must have honest people around your area. No doors and storing stuff. Can't wait to see your progress. You have always accomplished everything you started on your channel. 💯👌👌
I’m guessing is in our area we are in and out quite a bit as our neighbors are and everybody keeps an eye on stuff that’s not saying something won’t get stolen.
well it is small town indiana were everyones farmers buisness people etc whole different type of people its not the city all those people were raised from hard work and good values
Random thought.....once the roof structure is secured, but while your channel isn't large enough to need all of that square footage on the upper level, you might want to consider partitioning off a few portions to rent out as office / flex space. Might be a way for the building to provide some of the revenue needed for the improvements.....just a thought.
She's a diamond in the rough. Used to go by the inch a day rule when jacking old buildings and putting new foundations under them. Look forward to seeing this project progress for sure. You definitely have a good plan in place Capt. No doubt you'll get her whipped back into shape 😁👍
If you add columns up top, you need to add columns beneath them down to footings in the ground.
Nothing better than a hard working dude with a vision. Much respect!
Life is growing! Thumbs up 👍 for bringing us along. 😊
Appreciate all the support!
MIKE, love the attitude!
If I may comment bout lifting the roof. Looks like there's several ways to go, prolly lots a commenters telling you how BUT... I watched your creek crossing build and THAT worked!
You definitely aren't afraid to try new things!
Carry on Capt'n!
Cable ties running from poured concrete outside wall under the floor to the block outside wall would provide good foundation stablization. Use metal plates on outside of blocks as cable anchor.
If they were both concrete walls yes, wouldn't do much of anything with the cmu unfortunately
I can’t wait to see the process!! Congrats on the New World Headquarters!
That is made just like our old dairy barn. I've never seen anything like it.
Set me a thinkin a bunch of ways to do this, all them more exciting than the other. Who knowns, ya might find a whole roof somewhere. What an adventure!
Wow, that’s gonna be a big undertaking, but if done right,, it will make a huge shop for your use. Just think of all you can do in a shop like that? Gonna be great, can’t wait to see you restore that old building, have fun Mike 👍👍😎😎🙏🙏🍮🍮
This is a worthy project. Lots of dry storage and vehicle access.
Absolutely!
Madness! 😆 That's going to be a fun project... Plenty to keep you busy there!
Wow Mike! Cool old gym! And for how old it is that floor is in great shape. Looking forward too seeing what you do with it. And merry Christmas too you and your family sir
Thank you sir!
the old timers had a method to their madness that's for sure. arched roofs even today are bane of builders existence. with some re engineering , shoring up and upgrades, that old gym/DP storage give you vast room to grow. maybe call in a favor from everyone's favorite job bidder Mr.Millennial. Matt has bunch leftover ICF from his castle project he might part with
Congrats.
Sounds like the price was right, I hope the location is convenient to all your projects.
Get-R-Done, you can do amazing things when you put your mind to it Cap. This is going to be perfect for you.
On another note, I say to the Nae sayers if you don't like what Mike is putting out, there are a billion other channels that can suit your fancy I'll bet you.
P. S. We celebrate Mike on this channel because of his hard work.
Headquarters …boom baby!
This is incredibly exciting! Your vision and optimism is infectious and I so appreciate it. Worst case scenario is you can always film a post-apocalyptic version of the movie Hoosiers. I’d pay to watch that.
🤣🤣 now that's a good movie idea!
Looking forward to this project, I love a good renovation building or whatever. An amazing space for the World HQ.
Being a big fan I always watch the videos right to the end so particularly enjoyed the bonus shot of the Limestone😂😂
👋🇬🇧😀
