Today J dives into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to discuss a new theory about one of the biggest questions from Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald: Who did Leta say “I love you” to before she died, and what ramifications that act may have moving forward.

"Do you think Dumbledore will mourn for you?" Love this line
Chilling
@@iamx3656 Honestly my favorite line.
This makes you wonder what Grindalwalde thinks about Newt and Dumbledore.
Grindalwalde just wants Dumbledore to do that for him... because love and all that
Jealous much???
Leta kinda confuses me. There is that line in the first movie where Queenie calls her a "taker" I think, and mentions Newt needs a giver. I think it's because Leta was always an outcast and Newt constantly offered her emotional support, and perhaps she couldn't quite do the same for him. Even if they did have feelings for each other, Leta just couldn't be there for him as much as he did for her. Newt however is still associated with comfort to her, so even if she does really love Theseus, she instinctively reaches for Newt when she's cornered and afraid again. I'd like to think the "I love you" was for both though...
[It's also fun to notice how Queenie was right about the taker/giver thing. For example, caring about the things he loves. Leta was always passive around Newt's beasts, she was amazed by them but he was the channel between her and them. Tina on the other hand actively read his book, actually interacted with the big asian beast thingy, and overall really does try to be there for Newt and GET him and like him for who he is, not because he is her emotional support. It doesnt make Leta a bad person, she's just... Not as compatible. Really this weird love square thing is complicated. I wish I could rewatch this :/ )
@J&N Gaming and More! Leta didnt realise it was a different baby until afterwards
You can. It is on the internet. My city's cinema didn't show the movie (hate you forever cinema) so I had to wait for a month to see it on the internet.
Annie Lynch yup
Well Leta in Hogwarts helped Newt with beasts. And actually through him she learned about them and how to treat them. And she read book too.
Plus Queenie reads Newts mind and his opinion on her. Which doesn't mean she was only taker in real life. But the biggest thing about Leta we should understand that she has huge psychological trauma that hunts her till her death. So due to this it's no wonder she is the way she is. It's really difficult to be with person who is trapped in ideas she's a monster and killer and not worthy of happy life.
We all know it's newt, she had a crush on him (you can tell) since she was little. She even tells him you never met a monster you can't love. That's a metaphor for she is a monster, and he still overlooks it and still be her friend. And if you paid attention on the drawer that she opened it said L+N so she had to of liked him at one point.
"You Never met a monster you couldn't love"
What about the monster under my bed
I think it's interesting that Newt is named after a fairly common animal (albeit one used often in witches potions) and his brother is named for a mythological figure who is most famous for killing a fantastic beast.
Newt's full name is Newton Artemis Fido Scamander. Newton, possibly after Isaac or someone in his family . Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon and the hunt. Fido, again, possibly after a family memeber.. Scamander obvious.
Don't remind me that Newt's name is animal as well... My country literally translated his name to the animal....
Newton nn Newt. Newton JKR likely chose to reference Sir Isaac Newton but the NN Newt is a great nn for his character. Also, Porpentina, Tina's name, is an old word that means Porcupine.
Joshua Bruce Artemis was not only the godness of the hunt, she also protected the animals and cared for them!
Newt is named newt because she thought it was funny to have someone named "Newt Scamander" write a book about beasts, same as she has other funny names for the other authors on the list. I'm guessing "Fido" is also a joke (published in 2001, don't forget!)
Theseus is definitely intentional.

Man, my boy Theseus "Chad" Scamander really got the short end of the stick in this movie. Tries to help his rebellious little brother and gets brushed off but gives unconditional help nonetheless. Gets utterly rekt and embarrassed by said brother's on-again off-again girlfriend. Finally, his fiancée confesses she loves his brother rather than Theseus himself and promptly gets toasted to a crisp. Hopefully he gets a good revenge arc in Fantastic Beasts 3: Actually It's Theseus with the Dragon Patronus

@@elizakate7242 He loved Leta until they grew apart, and maybe split up without ever actually breaking up. He _does_ fall in love with Tina but that doesn't mean he doesn't love Leta. To be fair Voldemort also had a meeting of followers in a graveyard
True. I guess it really just suits that dark villain aesthetic--especially when you call your followers "Death Eaters".
Grindelwald's was not really the same kind of meeting, it was more of a recruitment speech while Voldemort was gathered with his sworn servants. If Grindelwald wanted to prove his good intentions of not murdering all muggles, he wasn't doing it in a very charming location at least.
That Probably is the reason Why Jk Rowling when writinh the script chose for a graveyard
To wink back to original canon
ok but that was HIS family's graveyard, and also, Voldemort is a lot more creepy than Grindelwald, who at the very least wears nice clothes and has a nose. :P
randomperson8571 “And has a nose” you are now my favorite person 😂
I just always assumed it was meant for both Newt and Theseus
Definitely an interesting theory... If this was the direction JKR was going, I wish we got just a little more hinting. I've also been thinking about this whole sacrificial love thing and I really appreciated your explicit explanation of the important "choice" element. Is this is similar kind of old magic that might be connected to ideas behind the blood pact?

Leta: I Love You (to Pickett)
Leta was talking to Grindewald when she said "I love you." 🤯
To quote my wife “it’s clearly Newt. If you have to question that you don’t know much about women”
Even if I am one ? 😂
@@Azeleen16 If you have to ask, yes.
@@insaincaldo I don't, that's a rethorical question to underline that I disagree...
@@Azeleen16 And I'm obviously claiming to better know not only you, but all of womenkind better then you do.
As a woman, I have to disagree. Women don't commonly marry the brothers of the men they love especially if when they don't love said brother... IMO it was both.
I disagree in one count. I think Leta died for both Newt and Theseus and was saying I love you to both. I think that she did love Newt but more as someone who saw her beyond her flaws. However, it is also clear throughout the movie that Leta does love Theseus. She is openly kissing him and in one scene genuinely seeks comfort from him. I think the dynamic of the three is that Newt introduces Leta to his brother, his brother got to know Leta the way Newt did and they fell for each other. Newt ends up feeling left out, which results in the awkward moments between the three, but it’s clearly the case that he doesn’t feel resentment towards them, just outside their relationship. Because of this both Leta and Theseus make numerous attempts to include Newt. Leta was saying I Love You to both and sacrificing herself for both because, while she could have technically saved herself by joining Grindlewald, it wouldn’t have been a life worth living when the only two people she loved were dead, and they would have died because she would have known there was no way either of them would have joined Grindlewald.
I agree about newt introducing her to Theseus which she falls in love, but imo that's exaclty the reason why she sayd i love you to him only . The ambiguity is just functional to the triangle between leta newt and tina for the audience.
Perfect explanation. Besides we've already been shown that sacrificial love works for people they don't love romantically
Thank you! I was hoping someone else had already said it since I'm a bit late. It is entirely possible to love someone with who you are not romantically involved nor related.
Emily Cone “love y’all”
@Emily Cone I would like to agree with you but I have one simple argument to refute your theory : in the French adaptation, Leta says 《Je t'aime》 before dying, and that is a singular form. If she'd been saying it to both brothers, she would have said 《Je vous aime》. And since J.K Rowling speaks French pretty well, I'm sure it was meant to be that way and that it was not just a mistranslation. So no, Leta is not confessing to both Newt and Theseus, but to only one of them, most likely to Newt.
I need an “Also, Also, Actually, Actually” shirt please!
I think she loved Newt but as she said early in the movie "you've never met a monster you couldn't love" meaning she knew he loved her and she loved him but she didn't think she was worthy of Newt's love because she loved him more than his brother
Leta's death is the most important death since Lily's death or is Lily's death the most important death since Leta's?
Amazing video, I'm waiting for the next one already.
But Harry didn't love everybody in the castle.......... That is so confusing.
Jack Writer he loved hogwarts itself so that protected everyone in it i think that was JK’s theory about it
You can have unconditional love for a collective group of people. He loved hogwarts and he had love for those who chose to stand and fight beside him. The protection wouldn't extend to those who escaped because they wouldn't need it they weren't fighting, nor any slytherines in the dungeons because they weren't being attacked by voldemort and therefore no protection would be needed
It is possible to love people you don't know, or have compassion and empathy for them. To include them in a group of people you wish to protect, and in doing so love them.
Ah cos let’s was before lily
He loved the castle, everyone inside the grounds made it what it was. Therefor saying that he “loved” everyone. Just not in the way most know.
I think it's similar to Grinderwald's fire. All those that truly loved and faught for Hogwarts that day was protected due to Harry's love of Hogwarts. He loved the feelings that came with Hogwarts, ya know? So those that had that love for Hogwarts were protected.
That's my theory and thanks for coming to my TedTalk

I really hope this is true. Leta's death was such a downer, her character development was so deep and interesting, and her intentions were always shady. If her death was a sacrificial protection, I think I can accept it. If not, it seems they killed off a great character with an interesting arch... for no reason.
George Gore or they will have some strange reason she comes back to life
Kyson Childs no, just... no
@@RangaBonsai It could just be for the emotions of her death. When you really feel something in a movie, it usually makes the movie much better. That's why there is so much loss in books. You feel for the characters so much more.
I don’t think she is really dead I feel like somehow she survived and is coming back
@@chaosdraconyx9832 True but partially. Cause I believe that one can feel more via books too. So it's not a loss. To each to their own though.
I believe she loved Newt and when he didn't return that love she married the next best thing, his brother. In school she had an obvious crush on Newt. While he was nice enough to her as opposed to all the others that bullied her over her lineage it was obvious that he wasn't looking for a girlfriend at the time. It didn't help that he was hard pressed with showing affection unless when it came to his animal friends. I mean the guy cringes every time his own brother tries to hug him. I think that its pretty obvious that she loved Newt. To me she only said: I love you and not a name because she was directing it to Newt but didn't want to hurt her fiancé's feelings who so happened to be standing right beside Newt at the time. If she loved Theseus she should've had no trouble saying I love you Theseus. If she said I love you Newt then that would break her fiancé even more knowing that she didn't truly love him and he might've turned his anger onto his brother. So there you go.
Riri Pari is it not canon that newt is in love with her tho? I thought it was. I’m pretty sure it was leta that shut down their connection and never went further than friendship because she didn’t think she deserved his love hence the line “you never met a monster you couldn’t love”

Do a video on the blue fire. The fire reminded me of the goblet of fire blue fire and it also kind of works the same in that it chooses who is worthy. Also avengers
its kind of a cool mix of fiendfire and the blue flames from gof
The fire is black in the screenplay. They only made it blue so we can see it on screen!
I was thinking that and it does go with what the goblet of fire is. Just a little bit more extreme in the consequences
Quantum Girl like in the first book where Harry and Hermione have to pass through either purple (I think it was?) flames or black flames? Hermione took the first one and went back to Ron while Harry went through the black one and faced Voldemort.

This is the question I’ve been asking ! Finally somebody’s answering!
I think the main reason why Harry’s sacrificial protection didn’t have the same effect as his moms is because Harry isn’t a mom. We’ve heard why Lily’s sacrifice was more powerful and it’s because it’s a mothers love. It’s the ULTIMATE protection. The most powerful form this spell can take. Leta lestranges love for the scamanders was “imperfect” because she’s not there mother and that’s why the effects aren’t as absolute

I just KNEW you would make this video 😀 I had been wondering that and the first time I watched it I thought she was talking to newt
Newt obviously. Although she was engaged to Theseus she was constantly reminiscing about her relationship with Newt. Tbh she wanted him to come to her and say that he still has feelings for her. Its why she tried to get Newt to remember things about their relationship that only they would know. I think she was engaged to Theseus through and arranged marriage since he was the oldest.
Please do a video on Black family secrets (I feel like there’s so much we don’t know about the Black family. Especially the recurring instances of family members who seem to be gifted with Occlumancy (is it an inherited trait?), for example, Bellatrix potentially taught Draco, who himself is remarkably skilled at it, and Narcissa managed to hide the fact that Harry was actually still alive from Voldemort himself. Overall, I just feel like when it comes to a long-standing pureblood family like that, there are many family secrets, magical and otherwise, that need uncovering. And there are so many family members to look into, besides the ones mentioned, Sirius and Regulus could be fun to look into, as well as going higher up on the family tree)
Love your videos btw!
Well to be fair. Inbreeding keeps genetic traids into the family. This goes for diseases but also for benificial traits.
I think Leta loved them both in two different ways.
It's obvious her love for Newt stems from way down and is genuine.
But with Theseus I think it was a friendship kind of love. I would assume they had to have gotten close if he proposed to her. He probably was there for in ways we don't actually know so I do believe she loved him just wasn't in love with him.
That was easily the best explanation I've heard for the mechanics of the magical protection spell from Lily Potter!
I kan see JK Rowling watching all those Fantastic Beast theories& and thinking 'oh, that's a good one, I'm gonna use it in the next movie and say it was all planned out since the very beginning'

I really think that she cast a sacrificial protection but I dont think that her 'i love you' was for a specific brother. She very well could have, and probably was, refering to both scamander brothers as she did in fact hold them both very dear to her
I’ve come back to this video after recently rewatching CoG. I’ve watched many theory videos on this saying she said it to them both or it was just Newt. Personally I think she did really love them both. I think Newt was her first love and she never truly got over him but I think she still did love Theseus when she was with him. I believe she got with Theseus because it was the closest thing to having Newt and she knew she couldn’t be with Newt because she thought of herself as a monster. However, after reuniting with Newt she realized that he had “never met a monster you couldn’t love”. After seeing that Newt would have loved her no matter what, it brought back all of her feelings and love for him. So when she sacrificed herself and said “I love you” I think she was saying it to Newt. Not because she didn’t love Theseus, but instead because she wanted Newt to know that she listened to him and she knew in her dying moments that she was not the awful person she always thought she was. She said it to him because she really did love him, but also because she wanted him, and only him, to know that he relieved her of her guilt. Now all of this being said, Leta still loved Theseus but he didn’t give her that relief and he didn’t give her that support like Newt did. CUZ NEWT IS A GIVER. anyways idk if anyone will see this but here it is. It’s also like 2:30 am so if I mixed up wording a little that’s why. Kisses!
6:10 "- and then his mom sacrifices himself for him -"
I think his mom was a female lol
I think that a movie surrounding the life of Leta being called the crimes of Grindelwald could be a hint that he is connected to her past. Maybe he influenced some big moments that defined her and leaving her broken like that is one of his crimes.
I think her death definitely counts as sacrificial protection. The real question is will the franchise recognize that and how will it be used? I know that once the brothers find out the truth there will be inner fallout
I just found my sons Christmas present!!
We celebrated a Harry Potter themed party. He loves watching you guys with me 💙
Fantastic theories. Where do you find them? On this channel. Thank you for another amazingly well-researched, thoughtful, mind-blowing video.
As far as the idea of Newt being able to pass through the fire and pose as a double agent, I think that having two Dark Lords who are that blind to the idea of a mole in their organization would strain suspension of disbelief. Especially since, so far, Grindelwald seems far more competent than Voldemort about those kinds of things.
I think this is a really good theory, but I'll offer some counter points:
-It might be that Lita didn't do it strictly out of love, but more out of obsession. It seems like her love for Newt was more to do with her inability to let go of the past.
-I think Lita was sacrificing herself partially out of penance for her misdeeds in school (possibly also getting Newt expelled)
-I don't think Lita is really a saint, but a bit like Snape. Somewhat redeemed, but a character with a lot of baggage. For this reason, I'm not sure the spell would have worked. It might even be that Lita was intending only to cast the spell, and it might be that the spell cannot be cast intentionally.
-If you are going to point out that Harry died to cast the spell intentionally, I think he was dying with the goal of defeating Voldemort. I don't think he realized he had cast the same spell as his mother until he had talked through it with Dumbledore.
Great video ♥️
Ohmysweetgoodness at the beginning I was like, “No!! This may be the only video I do not like...” I was devastated, but I gave it a chance and now I’m not sad. I can like the theory, it just hit me all the people who died and gave me all the feels!!! Good job guys!!
it doesnt have to be one or the other. Leta could love Newt AND Theseus. and she could have been speaking to both of them.
Jonathan Henry I had that same thought 💭
I think so too
Plot twist, she says it to the pizza delivery guy that delivered the actresses pizza behind the scenes.
🤣🤣🤣 best plot twist ever
That's the best thing I have heard
I love this theory! It also offers an explanation for Dumbledore's understanding of Lily's sacrifice -- it's because he's seen this particular magic before! Love it. Absolutely think she loved Newt.
Yes! That makes the script so much more exciting!
I think the arena at the Lestrange tomb, is for funerals. The coffin is placed at the middle of the room, where Grinelwald is standing. Moarning relatives are seated around it so everyone can see the corpse. After the funerals, the coffin, or whatever wizards use, is easy to move to its final resting place
Genius.
"Mr Scamander, do you think Dumbledore will morn for you?"-Gellert Grindelwald. The key to the entire puzzle
Love your shirt! Will you ever do a Cursed Child review (for the Play)?
I screeched when that scene happened. I almost immediately started questioning who she said it to, and looked at Newt when it showed him and his brother.
