  • The story of the rise and fall of one of Ayrshire's gems: a country mansion house turned hotel that celebrates its 100th birthday next year, alone! Watch us roam around this building dubbed by locals as "the overlook hotel" from The Shining to see what remains and going to complete waste!
    All historical facts of the location told through this video is based on research and what we believe to be fact at the time of shooting the footage. A location's status may change as time goes on...
    To whom it may concern:
    We reserve the right to name a location if we so choose.
    We personally do not break an entry. Should we be unable to gain access through means of getting through an already open space, we walk away. We take nothing but footage and leave nothing but footprints. We are storytellers portraying the tale of an abandoned place, some locations depicting a sad one which may leave some viewers passionate or disgruntled. We mean no disrespect to the locations we visit or the people once connected to them.
    Should anyone comment "it's not abandoned!"... If we walk up to a location that has not been in use, easily get access to its interior, walk about for hours filming, taking pictures and flying drones about in some cases and head home with no sight form anyone, it is in our opinion.. physically ABANDONED at the time of our filming.
    We enter derelict structures at our own risk. Civil trespass, also known as "simple trespass", is not a criminal offence in Scotland. Police get involved if there's a possibility that an offence has been committed such as refusal to leave (breach of the peace), fire, physical damage or theft etc all of which we avoid as that isn't our intention. Speaking of which, we are of course not responsible for those who get into bother by visiting any of the places we've been to nor do we encourage it.
    Opinions entitled but in the event that anyone posts overly negative, close-minded or ridiculous comments, they won't be approved and you will be blocked from future commenting, so don't waste your time.

    I live in this village. There are owners, and occaisionally workmen and groundsmen. The path in used by dog walkers in the village, and it's easy access to the property. The gatehouse was letted, and what was the old coach houses have people in. Nobody round here has ever called it "the overlook hotel" but it is a huge waste, that is in dire need of cash injection. It's owned by two borthers who don't really get along, and only visit maybe twice a year. Ironically they're sitting on it for future resale value, but nobody wants to buy a crumbling manor house. But they also don't want to spend the money for upkeep, doing the absolute minimum. Glad you had a nice time though, and your drone work is incredible (especially as we could see you flying it), and I am glad you were respectful

    • @DeviantDiscoveries
      @DeviantDiscoveries  Před rokem +1

      The gatehouse looked abandoned (or is it fairer to say "disused" to not frustrate the pompous watching this upload) but we were not sure. When we refer to it as "the overlook hotel" we meant more specifically local enough explorers have coined it and refer to it as that. Thank you for the additional information regarding the brothers etc.

    Thank you for this. In the early 2000s my family and a couple of groups of our family friends and their kids stayed at Kildonan House for a short self catering holiday from England - we all drove up from the different towns we were living in at the time.
    I was only a kid (must have been about 6/7 I think?) but I have fond memories of playing with the other kids in the living room you filmed with the red carpet, big windows, all the leather sofas and the old TV. We even have a home video of this holiday somewhere in my parents' house!
    I honestly thought I had dreamt the swimming pool as well so that was amazing to see that. Such a shame it is slowly going to rack and ruin, and I have to admit I'm shocked that they've left so many lights on with energy prices the way they are nowadays haha!

    Outstanding work! What you are actually doing is a public service by capturing a moment in time and a place before it decays or is demolished and lost forever. In many years to come, historians and anyone with an interest in this building or the area will know how things used to be. Also, I like your use of ethereal music in the first part of the video, and I was hoping someone can tell me name of it as I would like to add it to my music collection.

    • @DeviantDiscoveries
      @DeviantDiscoveries  Před rokem +3

      There are occasions for our own reasons and at our own choice that we do or don't name locations. However, back in say the 1960's, urbexers best tool to hide places were not to name them and keep them close to the chest. Fast forward 70 years to 2022 with so many Google tools and Facebook groups and social media platforms, the worst thing anyone could do is upload the existence of an abandoned place anywhere because that is the worst thing you could do!! This rule of "not naming" anywhere is SO heavily watered down now given the amount of tools, media and groups nowadays that naming places, in our view anyway, makes no difference in practise. However, we are all entitled to our own approaches. Thanks.

    Kildonan was run as a convent school by the Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny, between 1946 and 1978.
    After the nuns ran Kildonan, it changed hands a number of times, but has been owned by family firm Blue Strand Ltd for the past 17 years.
    Barrhill man Kevan McColm is a partner in the events side of the business, and is on-site site manager.
    He said: “We think the time is right to get Kildonan back on the map, and we’re getting a lot of interest through the internet and facebook.

After about 20 minutes of us wandering around the outside a red jaguar came speeding up the drive. By the time we'd made it back to the car at the south side she was pulling up there. The two businessmen down south are two brothers who apparently don’t get along at all and have very little interest now in this place. Especially not as much as the locals who are trying to protect it since it’s such a lovely building.
      They’ve ran out of things to do with the building and no buyers showing any interest giving its location. Locals are hanging on to with the skin of their teeth. As we understand. Buildings like this in such locations nowadays are sadly doomed.
