Apocalypse from the 90's show is definitely my Apocalypse.
Crazy that they went with the “ashes of their world” line from the X-Men: Apocalypse movie on the card back haha. Personally, I’m not a fan of the cel shaded look on the Hasbro figures, so I’m actually glad they didn’t do this as a VHS release and opted just to do the retro card.
I love the color scheme and body type, it makes it different enough from the BAF to warrant a purchase. Between this and the upcoming Marvel Select figures, it’s a good time to be an Apocalypse fan.

**Edit - I just saw a clip where Apocalypse says the “ashes” line in the cartoon, which is awesome haha
Saves a huge step, removing the shading is tedious, but so worth it, Wolverine looks amazing!
I'm glad they didn't give him the cell shading. Hasbro has been horrible on their shading for the VHS releases. Many times the shading makes no sense.

I’m guessing there was a little X-men/Capcom influence here too, with the decision to nix the cell shading and have it fit into our general display more. And I always took the retro line as kind of being a middle ground between the comics & the animated series. That’s how I justified the Retro Rogue & Gambit anyway.

I'm sure mine is going to display with the comic figures, didn't have the opportunity to get the BAF, so, it is what it is
I also would like to know where to put him, with comic X-men or VHS. Ultimately I’ll put him with the VHS figs because I’m all in on those now, and I saw someone on Insta paint theirs with a few black lines on the shoulder armor and chest. Made a world of difference. That might be an option. Great review!!

I would really like to see a head swap with the smiling AoA head. I would have loved an evil smiling headsculpt included. But this animated style one is definitely the best one!
AoA will forever be my favorite but classic is just mandatory.

My guess is all those accessories couldn’t fit in the VHS style box probably why we didn’t get any accessories with Mr.Sinister but who knows. It’s hard to think why Hasbro do what they do…
It's not part of that vhs wave it's just designed to look like the cartoon version without those bad shadings

Looks fantastic. The colour is better than I thought it would be. I wish all deluxe and baf figs came with as many decent accessories. Hell the standard figs should too. 😁
I'm guessing the metal clamp hand (that I think came with Professor X) should fit this.
I'd be tempted to give him some dark paint washes to bring out the line work. Maybe paint the blue and red they missed off the gun as well.

This Apocalypse looks more like his original appearances from early X-Factor comics when he turned Angel into Archangel. The difference is that he was all blue. I wasn't able to get the BAF but I'm good with that now, this mold is my favorite even if the colors are closer to animation.
Great review! I will definitly buy this figure since I don't have BAF version. The design of this costume is comic book accurate but colors aren’t. It should be all blue. Maybe they wanted to avoid dull look or (more likely) they wanted kill two birds with one stone - make figure for both our animated and comic book shelves 😀
Definitely Hasbro will release a cell shaded version of this Apocalypse and even the recent Beast. You know they are good on milking the same figure with just some repaints

Since the BAF version is almost impossible to find a decent price I'd go with this one for my comic book X-men shelf.

I thought Hasbro said this the animated Apocalypse. They couldn’t fit him in the VHS box.
Thank goodness he doesn't have cell shading. I hate that stuff. To me, all he's missing are the correct hands with the bars on them. I would have taken those over the new gun. Silver on the shins and forearms would have been nice, but he didn't always have that in the show.
Can someone answer this question for me? Did apocalypse in the comics grow like a giant or was it just the animated show? I couldn’t find examples of him big in comics?
Check out the mid 80s early X Factor books where Apocalypse debuted..if I remember correctly they showed him growing to giant size a few times
As someone who is collecting the VHS line I'm really not sure whether to get this guy. Will I end up spending money and then they go do another repaint in the VHS style packaging or will I miss out if I don't get this guy now. It's kinda the same with beast who I was positive we would get a cel shaded version but who knows now.
2 weeks after this comment and I went and got him as Hasbro did say they were taking a break with the X-Men VHS line. But for anyone still on the fence about getting him I'm here to say he's 100% worth it.

I don't have enough room to break things down by 'verse - my X display is just one giant mélange of comics, VHS, cinematic, and various X-related sub universes, so there's gonna be two Apocalyses menacing them.

Love this color! Wish the giant Toybiz BAF was this color. I don’t need cell shading. This will be in my display. I might mix and match parts. I’ll see when I get it.
Retro cards are the way to go. They are obviously popular and the best looking
I have him on preorder. My X-men VHS and Marvel Legends are displayed with HasLab Sentinel as a Battle diorama. So maybe will stay on his packaging
I hope this Apocalypse retro gets a repaint in the future. Same molds used but, painted all blue like the comics.

Just bought this figure today.. absolutely love it!
I love the comparison for the gun between the cartoon and the figure. Just a glaring lack of paint.
Hasbro should sell a paint pen pack with the 12 colors they use so we can finish painting their half-assed releases.
To me it sucks that Apocalypse can never be stop because he can do anything, But the X-MEN will always fight for humanity and to stop the most first ever born powerful mutant known as Apocalypse, If I ever see this figure online, I might get him or the Age Of Apocalypse Apocalypse but I do like the retro one more because the colors pop out, Excellent review on this figure Dan.

Have you tried switching one of these heads with the baf to see how that looks? I’ve never been too sure on that head
You can switch the heads between all 3 Apocalypse figures & they all look good.. especially the smiling AOA Apocalypse head on the BAF or the Retro

Looking back this is such a beautiful figure it pares well with X-men 97 glad they didn’t put shell shadeing on this ❤
As you will see soon in the comics, Apocalypse will return from the dimension he was trapped in with his family in X of Swords and he will be wearing this uniform in the main X-Men title.

I have the animated series Apocalypse but I want to resell him and by the build a figure version. I prefer the early 90’s comic look.

The animated xmen series is my xmen my favorite but I’m not a fan of the shading so I’m happy this one doesn’t have it cos I’m not a fan of the shading on the vhs line
My favorite apocalypse is the age of apocalypse. But this one is excellent. What's not? The price. The price is insane. Hascrap's insane screw the cell shading gimmick.👎

Great looking figure, but one eye is looking to the left and the other to the right.
Im guessing the negative reaction to the cel shading, they might have originally planned this to match up with that line. Maybe they will stop making the cel shaded animated series now
They said they want to finish the core team first. Distributing through the Disney store has not helped them in my opinion

I preordered the DST Apocalypse and skipped the Marvel Legends... DST one is cheaper and feels like a better made action figure... although I do prefer the Marvel Legends purple and blue colour...

All this remind me of is the time when he blasts rogue and she hits the deck and there's a shot of her animated ass, animator of the show put some time into that shot 🤣🤣

Do you watch many reviews? I’ve hated cell shaded from the beginning and bitched about it forever, the point I was making is if this is supposed to be a ‘animated’ influenced figure like the VHS how come it’s not shell shaded... I don’t actually want cell shading on my figures I was just asking the question about Hasbro’s decisions
Sadly going to have to pass on this one and hope and pray Hasbro releases a cel-shaded version in later years.
