  • The Boykin Spaniel is a great little companion, retriever, and flusher. The breed originated in South Carolina, and is actually the State Dog, which is kind of interesting.
    The Boykin Spaniel is a medium size dog, standing about fourteen to seventeen inches and weighing about twenty five to thirty five pounds. This little Spaniel is about the perfect size for a traveling companion.
    As a breed, Boykins tend to be friendly and outgoing and easy to train with modern positive reinforcement techniques.

    While they're definitely not built for the cold and you have to make sure they stay warm, my two Boykins absolutely love to play in the snow. They're amazing, sociable dogs and I've never met one who's utmost goal in life isn't to impress their people. The amount of happiness they get just from you letting them know they're a good dog is remarkable.

    Please more Boykins videos! We have a six month old that is the most special dog we've ever had and we've had many. Wanted a Boykin for forever but about impossible to find in the western US. He's doing well in training and we thank you for showing us not to expect him to train like other breeds, but that is why we love your training, one size does not fil all! Just waiting for the biting and wanting to wrestle all the time fades so his training will progress faster. Living in remote area and no dogs nearby that we feel comfortable his playing with, so we are his wrestle partners and he loves it. Thanks Stonnie.

    Thanks for the video Stonnie. I’m really leaning towards a Boykin instead of a lab for my family/hunting. It would be great to see you train one along side the labs like you’ve done in some of the other vids (English vs field vs GSP) to see how they respond in comparison. Keep up the great vids. Really enjoy watching them.

    This was info I have been looking for about this breed. It gave me some insight about the trainability and temperament from a dog trainer's perspective.

    I couldn't agree more stoney. I've used your methods on my Boykin pup. He's five months old now and doing great.

    One more thing, my parents have been breeders of Boykins & Karakashians at LBD Ranch for about 20 years in Oklahoma. the Boykin doesn't do well in heat unless you shave their coat down. with their dubble lair coat it thrives in the cold more than anything. I seen this dog break through ice to get a downed duck, a neoprene vest is all you need for that. This breed of dog can go hard all day, but you have to be careful it's like a racehorse they will go hard until exhaustion sets in and if your dog is not wearing a vest it will disappear under the water and you're jumping in to rescue the dog.

    Dear sir, you have awesome videos, I lost my lab of 10 years and I think I am too old to train another, breaks my heart. Are Boykins maybe good for seniors and good with little grandchildren? Thanks in advance.

    Hey Stonnie, your videos about training Labradors are amazing and helped me alot, do you have any videos about training Rottweiler Puppies, as i think it's the most difficult to control, or the same rules and steps you follow with the Lab will be enough ?

    I've heard spaniels have a stronger odor than most dogs do you find this true with the Boykin spaniel?

    It makes me sad when I watch these informational videos about Boykins and they are always leaving out the best attribute of what this breed can actually do-being a service dog. I've been teamed up with seizure alert SDs for over 30yrs and the Boykin surpasses all other breeds when it comes to service. The Boykin has not reached its full potential for it's breed and it just a shame that people have no clue what this dog is fully capable of doing other than just being a family pet and Hunter, there skills are totally wasted on that.

      That’s a video of a dog walking in a leash. Do you have some videos of the dogs actually performing service related tasks in real life?

    • @Dod-Squad
      @Dod-Squad Před rokem

      @@StonnieDennis you must be blind and in need of a guide dog, my dog isn't using a Leash, she is a Seizure Alert SD. What Tasks would you like to see her perform? Alerting me to a seizure before I have one and watch to see what she does when I drop to the ground in convulsions why I lose consciousness. Use some common sense and think before you ask those kind of Question...

    • @Dod-Squad
      @Dod-Squad Před rokem

      @@StonnieDennis that short video of my dog off-leash in a grocery store would be considered tasking in real life, simply because I never use a leash with my dog, it would hinder the dog from tasking when a medical issue happens and plus the dog could be dragged down with me when I have a seizure then possibly injuring the dog.

    • @Dod-Squad
      @Dod-Squad Před rokem +1

      @@StonnieDennis I must apologize for lashing out at you sorry about that. I was extremely aggravated.
      You never ask a Handler to have their SD perform the tasks what there trained to do if a medical issue comes about, that would be like asking me to show you my disability and that would be extremely embarrassing & humiliating for me.
      What you would consider tasking for a SD in real life, what Calypso does to get me through the day would probably be boring for you unless I had a seizure.. She is conditioned/trained finely tuned to fit my lifestyle. Wherever I Go no matter of the surroundings and conditions she is stuck to my side off-leash like a Siamese twin without giving her one command. When I walk up to an intersection and stop she will take her place sit on my right side facing me until I proceeded to cross the street then she follows without a command. When I walk up to a cashier she will take her place and sit between me and the register facing the direction we'd be leaving without a command given. When I'm in a examining room at a doctor's office or even the ER, all's I have to do with her is point to where I want her to go and She lays there and stays until I release her. That there is a very very short list as her role being a SD to get me through the day. The only real life Task that you would probably find interesting to watch, would be humiliating for me. Calypso's main task is to alert me before I have a seizure, secondary task would be Response, depending on the severity of the seizure, if they're not that severe she will ply pressure therapy across my legs below the belt line and if they are severe she will go up to my face and start breathing hard into it, at the same time pawling at my shoulder attempting to stop me from seizing.. there's a lot of time throughout the day I totally forget there's a dog on my side until someone walks by us and says Oh Ah what a pretty dog. Not all SDs are trained to do those poller task, turning on and off lights, opening closing doors or fetching a TV remote. there's a lot of SDs out there for unseen disabilities that don't need any of those tasks trained into the dog... again, I'm truly sorry for lashing out at you, it was uncalled for...
