what the person above said ^^ but also to some degree, depending on your definition of trans, it can be correct. Drag is "transvestism" in the old sexology lingo, and while that's fallen largely out of favor, I'd still argue that, for all intents and purposes, anyone who is currently in drag is "trans." They're "doing" transness. They "do" it temporarily, but in the long run, everyone "does gender" temporarily. That they are transcending the prescribed bounds of their assigned sex makes them, in that moment, "trans," and while they may take it off afterwards, that doesn't undo the harm they can experience while in drag, because someone is perceiving them as a trans woman. It's ultimately the argument that belies trans womens' inclusion in women's spaces -- if people are doing violence to women, they're not doing violence to women because they have a chromosome detector, they're doing it because the target looks like a woman who fits their categories required for "target." If people are doing violence to trans women, they're not doing it because they have a perfect trans-detector, they're doing it because the target looks like a trans woman. So while they may not meet the categorical requirements for LITERAL inclusion under the umbrella of "transgender," for all pragmatic intents and purposes, they should probably still be considered "transgender."

Sadly, the first season of Bob's Burgers has moments that don't age well. They were clearly trying to be edgy to be like other Fox shows, and that would've been detrimental to the show's future.

Honestly, even the more iffy moments were still very progressive. There was the initial HA HA HA MAN IN A DRESS factor, but even in that very episode, the drag queens aren't really meant to be "joke" charachters like Ida Quagmire, but just...charachters. People. People who are different, but people nonetheless. I actually feel like that kind of representation is what helps people become more open-minded to things they were close-minded about. If we look past the political incorrectness and really take it for what it is, I think it's good representation of LGBT people.
Its like how despite all the n-bombs, Blazing Saddles is still one of the best films lampooning racism.

Back in 2011, Transvestite was more equivalent to drag queen, or rather it rolled up modern-trans and drag together. There wasn't the idea of those being two distinct concepts, unless you worked in mental health, or were deeply embedded in the community. My oldest, bestest friend is trans and she and I both think the term "transvestite" is not outdated. We both could be mistaken (it's happened before once or twice) but we're pretty sure that transvestite is the same as "crossdresser." Not an individual that is in the process of transition, or even one with an assigned misgendering, but someone that is one specific sex and gender, but enjoys wearing clothes designed for the opposite.
Please correct me if you know for certain that I'm incorrect.

    • @nbucwa6621

You are correct. The folks claiming the label of transvestite back then were most often cis hetero men who enjoyed "crossdressing" for their own personal enjoyment and because the word "crossdresser" carried some bad connotations (this is esp around the time that movies like Psycho and Hannibal's Buffalo Bill featuring crossdressing serial killers were popular and the general public started equating the word crossdresser with the idea of psychotic killers), they wanted a new label that didn't have the same baggage. Unfortunately most of the mainstream public who didn't even really understand drag at the time confused it both with the idea of drag queens and "transsexuals" and lumped all three together. You could even compare it to the way being gay or lesbian was often equated to wanting to change genders (lesbians being accused of wanting to be men and gay men being told they just wanted to be girls) even though it had nothing to do with that. Any label that hit the mainstream just generally became confused with something else.

My critique on that first scene: They could be trans women or drag queens. The one jokes that she's a 'married man' ... which could imply drag or a trans woman that's comfortable joking about their AGAB
Scene 2: The actual Transvestite definition is a person who dresses in clothes primarily associated with the opposite sex (typically used of a man). So not necessarily transgender, but more of cross-dressers or fem boys. Think Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Scene 3/4: I've seen aggressive cis women and passive cis men so idk where they get AMAB = aggressive and AFAB = gentle
Ok that trans pep talk makes me want to watch the show ... but yeah not to say that they were right in their outdated terms and stereotypes ... but those are my takes on it. I'm agender and deal with lots of hate so I'll take any good rep I can get even if it's slight.

I’ve seen him as a straight/ possibly queer male who’s very comfortable expressing his gender in a very feminine way he’s never really struggled with his gender identity and seems happy the way he is the only character I’ve seen struggle is Louis bc she felt like she wasn’t girly enough and Tina told her it was okay… I think a lot of the comments about him being a girl and having a vagina is because he’s close with his two sisters and mom and doesn’t like feeling left out but he’s made plenty of wiener jokes too. If anything I’d say he could be gender-fluid or non-binary just not a trans woman even then I still just think he’s a cis male… until the show touches on it more I’m going to hold continue holding that opinion.

Hi Samantha, I love your channel and I love that you're talking about Bob's Burgers! I interpreted the scene with Gene and the computer differently. As someone who's familiar with the shows and characters, I don't think Gene was trying to say that he was disgusted specifically by transfem porn. He's a 11 year old boy and one of his traits is getting extremely anxious when he thinks he's attracted to someone or something. So I think instead of being disgusted he was just overstimulated by seeing things that no 11 year old could ever be prepared to see. And in later seasons Gene becomes more transfem/gender non conforming coded.

In 2010/2011 the mantra for comedy was that equality is joking about everyone equally. Obviously we know now that people can't be trusted with that as they'll take jokes about a trans person and equate that to all trans folk, but I think the intent here was to be inclusive, poke some fun, but ultimately try and show a positive and kind group of people who are trans.
I think they'd do much better with it in 2024. I've not watched in a long time tbh so might pop back into it and see how it's going.

This comes from a genuine effort to understand. My understanding was that a transvestite was a man who dressed as a woman primarily for sexual reasons, as a fetish, and not as an expression of their identity. They don't necessarily feel like a woman, but derive sexual pleasure from appearing like one. Is it not?

It is interesting to look at the early era of the show, because even back then this storyline was pretty daring and accepting on that way of life, and it was due to episodes like this that gave Bob's Burgers a massive queer audience! We find out that there is a lot of queer-coded stuff throughout the later seasons (Bob is at least Bi and some fans go as far as saying that Gene is at the very least fluid). Also within that time frame of 2011 when the show first started only the few knew that Gene is a TransFemme egg. Before our shells cracked we saw ourselves in Gene because we're similar. A closer relationship with our mothers than fathers. Being spontaneous, breaking the Heteronormativity, and expanding ourselves to be open minded. Episode after episode it's clear that Gene is TransFemme or Nonbinary. As Samantha mentioned the Modeling is great, even though the punch lines of the writers were bad. But, over time I think Unions and writers are indicating more positive messages against heteronormativity (THEIR is no such thing as straightness being normal and it shouldn't be enforced down all Human beings) we can see that we will have more positive representation. I just wish Transbians (WlW) had more representation because it's hard for us to be in relationships. Dead name Domain YT discussed how a Lesbian bar owner doesn't accept TransFemmes. That isn't Feministic nor Inclusive of the LGB community when their are individuals with in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community that have Transmysogy or Internalized Transphobia. And we need media to show positive representation, correct the mistakes and to remove the hurt, hate and the stereotypes Ace Ventura, pass media, and writers have done against the Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender nonconforming communities. Gene is such an egg. ⚧️ 🥰
Hope y'all have a wonderful day.

I looked up the term "transvestite" and it basically means cross-dresser, not necessarily transgendered people. In that context, the "I'm a married man" joke makes more sense and, in my mind, is far less offensive. As a man, I'm not sure what men are supposed to feel when we're attracted to trans women... I know I have no problem admitting that you're smoking hot because, well.... I have eyes. As far as the party goes, I'm not sure the jokes were trans joke or sex-worker jokes, but either way, my main criteria for jokes is first and foremost if they're funny, and these jokes weren't that funny. In any case, the issues are bigger in society than about trans attraction, and is as much or more about homophobia. They see these trans women as men and, if they wouldn't be ashamed about being attracted to a man, then attraction to a trans woman wouldn't be an issue.

Considering the cis writers who'd already cast male voice actors to do all the female voices, and its production in 2011, I'd say this is the least transphobic episode yet pre-2013.
Except for the framing them all as men, including a trans woman (tho she could have been a man who's GNC or a cis drag queen); but honestly these people needed sensitivity training and a good 15 hours of violence and gender dysphoria to really understand what this is like.

    transvestite /trăns-vĕs′tīt″, trănz-/
    noun
A person who dresses in a style or manner traditionally associated with the opposite sex. A person who sometimes wears clothes traditionally worn by and associated with the opposite sex; typically a male who cross-dresses occasionally by habit or compulsion. Someone who adopts the dress or manner or sexual role of the opposite sex.
I think you're confused, Samantha. Transvestitism is the desire to present as the opposite gender, presumably without the sort of dysphoria that would cause someone to surgically alter their genitals. Transvestites still exist, they still dress up in women's clothing, and they're still fabulous. Just ask the wonderful Eddie Izzard.

I used to know a guy who liked to wear skirts and fishnets and a bustier while sporting a thick, black beard. That behavior is really "nonbinary", imho. But that's the thing: all these terms are new, and unstable in common usage. Imo, it isn't that the old words are "wrong", it's just that we've reached a point where there are many behaviors that don't fit the old words. But, for instances where the old words still work, I think we can still use them. The word "transvestite" has a long-settled meaning as "a man who likes to wear women's clothing". Although, the writers, actors and creator of the show have learned to do better over time and have taken the time to listen to the community more. Recently, (and to reiterate what you said) they replaced the actor who originally voiced Marshmallow with a trans woman. Plus, it is STRONGLY implied that Gene is non-binary, and he comfortably uses different gender identities (for example, he doesn't mind the pronouns he or she, and he's also comfortable being called brother and/or sister; it's implied that he is bigender, even though he mostly does use the he/him pronouns). I feel like all the times I see Gene’s “egg cracking” is a nice Easter egg in and of itself, so to speak. I feel like the work that they've done on Bob's Burgers has shown significant progress, and I give them credit for learning from their mistakes (I'm trans/non-binary myself).

I took the second scene with Fene differently, I don't think the punchline was that Gene might be attracted to a trans or gender-non-conforming person, but that Gene is a kid looking at porn on the family computer (which is why he's banned, and he's young so finding a porn site which probably has a lot of overwhelming stuff for a kid just growing into their sexuality which is why he was fine with it)

Hi Sam, I love your channel! You are really cool. I know you're pretty young, like gen z (I am an elder millennial) So maybe you haven't heard of this film, but I highly highly recommend you check out this awesome pioneering pro trans/drag/LGBTQIA movie called "To Wong Foo ... something or other" It's kind of a long, weird title but a GREAT film. That one scene in this Bob's episode with the 3 trans or drag queen ladies and the crack and all (which I agree was NOT so great) is actually a reference to that. Anyway Too Wong Foo came out in the early/mid 90s I think and it's not perfect of course but it's waaay ahead of it's time and as a film/ media girl I really think you would love it a lot! It's so funny, cute, and wholesome and a great story. Great cast too! (Patrick Swayze, John Leguizamo, Wesley Snipes, Rizzo from Grease etc) Anyway, it's awesome and you should definitely check it out. ALSO great sponsor for this one! Probably gonna get that wood lol. I definitely don't want to have a stinky car hahah! I appreciate you and your channel very much. Have a wonderful day!

I remember watching this episode not that many years ago and thinking parts of it was uncomfortable to watch (the parts that Samantha criticised). Now I understand why. Luckily my parents weren’t that vocally against trans people when I grew up, so I didn’t have much bigotry to unlearn when I started trying to understand trans people.

1:32 literally even the MOST “progressive” shows at the time like sex and the city or will and grace used trans people existence as punchlines 😢

Still gets the laughs in some places, in 2024 😒Meanwhile on terf/GC island(UK) trans maxing is the new buzzword they are using to stir up hate against trans women claim trans women are just incels who can't get a date with a woman so they are becoming the date themselves.
We need more to address rubbish like this going on now.
